Today was a day of venturing beyond the bustling Medina of Fes, a journey into Morocco's rich tapestry of history and culture. Leaving the familiar labyrinthine streets behind, my friends and I embarked on a day trip that promised ancient ruins, imperial cities, and a glimpse into the soul of this captivating country. I was particularly excited to see Volubilis, a place I'd only read about in history books.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Tarbouche. The café was charming, and the entirely female staff made us feel welcome. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea and an assortment of pastries. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The food was delicious and gave us a taste of Moroccan cuisine. What a way to start the day!

Although non-Muslims are not allowed to stay overnight, we were able to visit during the day.

As we approached Moulay Idriss, the air seemed to shift, carrying a sense of reverence and tranquility. The town's narrow streets wound their way up the hillside, lined with traditional houses and adorned with colorful decorations. We visited the main mosque, admiring its intricate architecture and the peaceful atmosphere that permeated the space. Though we couldn't enter as non-Muslims, simply being in the presence of such a sacred place was a moving experience. The views from the top of the town were breathtaking, overlooking the surrounding countryside and offering a panoramic vista of Morocco's beauty.

Meknes: An Imperial City's Splendor

Our final destination was Meknes, one of Morocco's four imperial cities, a place where history and grandeur intertwine. Founded in the 11th century, Meknes reached its zenith under the rule of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, who transformed it into a magnificent capital. The city's imposing gates, elaborate palaces, and sprawling ramparts stand as testaments to its glorious past.

We began our exploration at Bab Mansour, the grandest of Meknes' gates, a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture. Its intricate tilework, towering arches, and imposing presence left us in awe. Passing through the gate, we entered the bustling medina, a vibrant hub of commerce and culture. We wandered through the labyrinthine streets, admiring the colorful souks, the traditional crafts, and the lively atmosphere. I couldn't resist purchasing a few souvenirs, including a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl and some fragrant spices.

Next, we visited the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, a sacred site dedicated to the city's most revered ruler. The mausoleum's intricate decorations, serene courtyards, and peaceful ambiance provided a glimpse into the spiritual heart of Meknes. We also explored the Heri es-Souani, a vast complex of granaries and stables built by Moulay Ismail to house his বিশাল army of horses. The sheer scale of the complex was astounding, a testament to the sultan's ambition and power.

Back in Fes, we made a stop at Palais Mnebhi. The meal was a perfect ending to a day of exploration, a chance to reflect on the incredible sights and experiences we had shared.

It was a fitting end to a day that had taken us from ancient Roman ruins to the height of Moroccan culinary artistry.
