Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Beyond Fes

Today was a day of venturing beyond the bustling Medina of Fes, a journey into Morocco's rich tapestry of history and culture. Leaving the familiar labyrinthine streets behind, my friends and I embarked on a day trip that promised ancient ruins, imperial cities, and a glimpse into the soul of this captivating country. I was particularly excited to see Volubilis, a place I'd only read about in history books.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Tarbouche. The café was charming, and the entirely female staff made us feel welcome. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea and an assortment of pastries. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The food was delicious and gave us a taste of Moroccan cuisine. What a way to start the day!

Volubilis: Whispers of the Roman Empire

Our first stop was Volubilis, an ancient Roman city that stands as a testament to a bygone era. As we approached the site, the rolling hills and olive groves painted a picturesque landscape, a stark contrast to the urban energy of Fes. Stepping onto the grounds of Volubilis felt like stepping back in time. The ruins, though weathered by centuries, still echoed with the grandeur of the Roman Empire.

We wandered through the remnants of temples, bathhouses, and villas, marveling at the intricate mosaics that adorned the floors. Our guide shared stories of the city's past, painting a vivid picture of life in Roman Morocco. It was fascinating to learn how Volubilis thrived as a major trading center, connecting North Africa with the Roman world. I couldn't help but imagine what it must have been like to walk these streets centuries ago, surrounded by bustling markets and the vibrant energy of a thriving city. The detail in the mosaics was incredible, and it was easy to see why this place is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The stones of Volubilis whispered tales of emperors and traders, of a civilization that once thrived in this very spot.

Moulay Idriss: A Sacred Pilgrimage

From Volubilis, we journeyed to Moulay Idriss, a town of profound spiritual significance. Perched on a hillside, this is considered one of Morocco's holiest cities, a place of pilgrimage and devotion. The town is named after Moulay Idriss I, who arrived in 789, bringing the religion of Islam, and starting a new dynasty. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to stay overnight, we were able to visit during the day.

As we approached Moulay Idriss, the air seemed to shift, carrying a sense of reverence and tranquility. The town's narrow streets wound their way up the hillside, lined with traditional houses and adorned with colorful decorations. We visited the main mosque, admiring its intricate architecture and the peaceful atmosphere that permeated the space. Though we couldn't enter as non-Muslims, simply being in the presence of such a sacred place was a moving experience. The views from the top of the town were breathtaking, overlooking the surrounding countryside and offering a panoramic vista of Morocco's beauty.

Meknes: An Imperial City's Splendor

Our final destination was Meknes, one of Morocco's four imperial cities, a place where history and grandeur intertwine. Founded in the 11th century, Meknes reached its zenith under the rule of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, who transformed it into a magnificent capital. The city's imposing gates, elaborate palaces, and sprawling ramparts stand as testaments to its glorious past.

We began our exploration at Bab Mansour, the grandest of Meknes' gates, a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture. Its intricate tilework, towering arches, and imposing presence left us in awe. Passing through the gate, we entered the bustling medina, a vibrant hub of commerce and culture. We wandered through the labyrinthine streets, admiring the colorful souks, the traditional crafts, and the lively atmosphere. I couldn't resist purchasing a few souvenirs, including a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl and some fragrant spices.

Next, we visited the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, a sacred site dedicated to the city's most revered ruler. The mausoleum's intricate decorations, serene courtyards, and peaceful ambiance provided a glimpse into the spiritual heart of Meknes. We also explored the Heri es-Souani, a vast complex of granaries and stables built by Moulay Ismail to house his বিশাল army of horses. The sheer scale of the complex was astounding, a testament to the sultan's ambition and power.

Palais Mnebhi: A Glimpse into History

Back in Fes, we made a stop at Palais Mnebhi. This early 20th-century palace is not only stunning in its architecture but also significant as the place where the Treaty of Fes was signed in 1912, marking the beginning of French colonial rule over Morocco. The palace, built by Mehdi Mnebhi, features a grand reception hall with a high wooden dome, supported by four columns, and a large wall fountain adorned with zellij mosaic tiles. It's a beautiful example of the opulent residences of the time. It now serves as a restaurant, offering a unique dining experience amidst historical splendor. It was fascinating to walk through the same halls where such pivotal moments in Moroccan history took place.

Palais du Tresor: An Elegant Retreat

Before heading to dinner, we also visited the Palais du Tresor. While we didn't stay there, we admired its elegant design and upscale amenities. It seems like a wonderful option for travelers seeking a blend of relaxation and cultural immersion, with its proximity to the Medina and comfortable, well-appointed rooms.

A Culinary Finale

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Les Jardins de Sheherazade for lunch. The name conjured images of Arabian Nights, and the restaurant did not disappoint. The ambiance was enchanting, with lush gardens and traditional Moroccan decor. We indulged in a feast of local delicacies, savoring the flavors of tagines, couscous, and grilled meats. The meal was a perfect ending to a day of exploration, a chance to reflect on the incredible sights and experiences we had shared.

To cap off the day, a bit of shopping was in order. Art Fez caught my eye with its unique, handmade shoes crafted from cactus fiber and camel hair. I couldn't resist buying a pair as a memento of my time in Fes. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and these shoes are not only beautiful but also tell a story of Moroccan craftsmanship.
