Cultural Exploration in Fes with Friends
Day 3: Fes's Hidden Gems: Gardens, Museums, and Medina Magic
Discover the serene beauty of Fes with visits to lush gardens, cultural museums, and the vibrant heart of Place Rcif. A day of exploration!
Oases of Calm and Cultural Treasures
Today in Fes, I sought out a blend of tranquility and cultural immersion, a balance I often crave amidst the hustle of travel. It's about finding those pockets of serenity and discovery that truly enrich the experience. Setting out with my friends, I was ready to explore gardens, museums, and the lively heart of the medina.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Nagham Cafe. The aroma of Moroccan coffee filled the air as we settled into our seats. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast – msemen (pancakes) with honey and a strong, sweet coffee. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. We sat there, chatting and planning our route, the sounds of the city slowly waking up around us.
From the cafe, we made our way to Jnan Sbil, a sprawling garden oasis in the heart of Fes. As we stepped through the gates, the chaos of the medina faded away, replaced by the soothing sounds of birdsong and rustling leaves. The gardens were established in the 19th century, initially reserved for royalty before opening to the public in 1917. After recent renovations, the gardens have been restored to their former glory.

Wandering through the Andalusian Garden, I was struck by the vibrant colors and meticulously landscaped greenery. Fountains gurgled, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of orange blossoms. The Mexican Garden offered a unique contrast, showcasing plants from across the Atlantic. We even stumbled upon a bamboo forest, a peaceful enclave with calming water features. I was particularly impressed by the historic water channels and norias (water wheels), a testament to the ingenuity of the city's past.
The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in finding moments of peace and connection amidst the unfamiliar.
Leaving the tranquility of Jnan Sbil, we headed to the Dar Batha Museum, housed in a stunning palace built in the late 19th century. The museum is a treasure trove of Moroccan arts and crafts, offering a glimpse into the country's rich cultural heritage. As a former English teacher with a love for history, I was eager to explore its collections.

The museum's architecture alone was worth the visit. Intricate tile work, carved wooden ceilings, and a serene Andalusian garden created a captivating atmosphere. The collections were equally impressive, showcasing ceramics, textiles, woodwork, and traditional musical instruments. I was particularly drawn to the exhibit on Fassi embroidery, admiring the intricate designs and vibrant colors. The collection of ceramics, including the famous blue pottery of Fes, was also a highlight.
Sophie, my nine-year-old, would have loved the textiles. I made a mental note to bring her back someday; she'd be fascinated by the Berber carpets and the traditional garments, each telling a story of Moroccan artistry. Hans, ever the pragmatist, would appreciate the astrolabes, historical astronomical instruments used for navigation and timekeeping.
After immersing ourselves in the museum's treasures, we ventured into Place Rcif, a bustling square in the heart of the medina. The square is one of the only places inside the medina accessible by car, making it a vibrant hub of activity. The R'cif Mosque, with its towering minaret, dominates the skyline, a reminder of the city's rich Islamic heritage. The square has a history of being a rallying point during protests, and you could definitely feel a sense of community here.

Place Rcif was teeming with life. Locals gathered to chat, children played, and vendors hawked their wares. The air was filled with the sounds of bartering, music, and laughter. We wandered through the square, soaking in the atmosphere and marveling at the energy of the medina. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy. We headed to Coin Berbere Carpets & Antiques, a renowned shop in the medina. The shop has been around for generations, owned by the Bouzidi Idrissi brothers, Khalid and Abdul. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a dazzling array of carpets, each with its unique design and story.

Abdul, one of the brothers, welcomed us warmly and offered us mint tea. He explained the different types of carpets, from the geometric designs of the Azillal rugs to the plush, luxurious Beni Ourain carpets. I was particularly drawn to the vintage carpets, handwoven by skilled women with colorful Berber motifs. I could envision one of these in our living room back in Berlin, a vibrant reminder of our time in Morocco.
I found myself particularly drawn to a Zemmour carpet, its intricate patterns and rich colors telling a story of the High Atlas Mountains. As someone who appreciates craftsmanship and unique finds, I knew this would be a special piece to bring home. After some friendly negotiation, we settled on a price, and Abdul carefully packed the carpet for us, ready for its journey to Berlin.
For lunch, we stopped at Chez Hakim, a local restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. I ordered the chicken tagine with olives and lemon, a flavorful and aromatic dish that perfectly captured the essence of Moroccan cooking. The tagine was served with warm, crusty bread, which we eagerly used to soak up the delicious sauce. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a relaxed atmosphere that made us feel right at home. It was the perfect place to refuel after a busy day of sightseeing.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Les Mystères de Dar Tajine for dinner. The restaurant is known for its beautiful interior and charming atmosphere. I opted for the lamb tagine with prunes and almonds, a sweet and savory dish that was simply divine. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the prunes and almonds added a delightful sweetness. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a great value for the quality of the food.

The service was impeccable, and the staff was friendly and attentive. The decor was stunning, with intricate tile work and traditional Moroccan furnishings. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, making it the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring. I enjoyed a glass of Moroccan wine with my meal, savoring the flavors and aromas of the region. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Fez El Jdid, visit the Aben Danan Synagogue, and admire the Andalusian Mosque. I am particularly looking forward to experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of the Mellah and learning more about the city's Jewish heritage. We might even end the day with a drink at Eden Chope Bar. It's moments like these, shared with friends, that make travel so special. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this fascinating city and to share my experiences with you.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am reminded of the importance of slowing down and immersing oneself in the local culture. It's not just about seeing the sights, but about connecting with the people, savoring the flavors, and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us. Fes has a way of captivating the senses and nourishing the soul. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
The evening was spent reminiscing about our adventures over mint tea. The city was quiet, a stark contrast to the bustling medina we had explored during the day. I am starting to feel like a local, even though I have only been here for a few days. It is amazing how quickly you can adapt to a new culture when you open your heart and mind to it.
I am looking forward to sharing more of my adventures with you tomorrow. Until then, goodnight from Fes! I hope you enjoyed reading about my day of exploration. Stay tuned for more stories from Morocco! It has been a truly magical experience so far, and I am excited to see what else this beautiful country has in store for me.
