A Blue Awakening in Chefchaouen

Arriving in Chefchaouen felt like stepping into a dream. After a long journey from Berlin, including a flight to Tangier and a bus ride through the Rif Mountains, I was finally here, ready to explore the famed blue city of Morocco. My first day was all about getting lost in the medina, soaking up the atmosphere, and trying to capture the essence of this unique place through my lens.

The bus dropped me off near Hotel Barcelona, my home for the next nine days. After a quick check-in, I grabbed my camera and ventured out, eager to see if the reality matched the pictures I had seen online. It did, and then some. The cool March air was a welcome change from the stuffy bus, and the city was vibrant with activity.

Wandering the Azure Labyrinth: Chefchaouen Medina

My first stop was the Chefchaouen Medina, the old town known for its stunning blue-washed buildings. As I stepped through one of the ancient archways, I was immediately enveloped in a world of blue. Every building, every wall, every doorway was painted in a different shade, creating a mesmerizing visual experience. I learned later that this tradition possibly originated with Jewish refugees in the 1930s, the blue symbolizing the sky and heaven, which is a constant reminder of God. It was like walking through a dream, a serene and calming experience that made me feel instantly at peace.

The Medina itself is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets, each turn revealing a new perspective, a new detail to admire. Sunlight filtered through the narrow gaps between buildings, casting intricate patterns on the blue walls. The air was filled with the sounds of daily life – children playing, artisans hammering, and vendors calling out their wares. I let myself get lost, wandering aimlessly, soaking in the atmosphere. I found myself stopping every few steps to take photos, trying to capture the beauty of this unique place. It was easy to see why Chefchaouen is often called the Blue Pearl of Morocco.

I was immediately struck by the relaxed atmosphere. Shopkeepers weren't pushy, and locals greeted me with friendly smiles. It was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Berlin, and I felt myself relax and unwind.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the warmth and authenticity of its people.

As I wandered, I noticed the small details that made Chefchaouen so special. The colorful ceramic pots filled with flowers, the intricate metalwork on the doors, the handwoven carpets hanging from the walls. I was particularly drawn to the doors, each one unique and beautifully decorated. I started taking photos of them, creating a collection of these small works of art.

A Break at Plaza Uta el Hamman

After a few hours of wandering, I found myself in Plaza Uta el-Hamman, the main square of Chefchaouen. It was a bustling hub of activity, filled with cafes, restaurants, and shops. I decided to take a break and have some lunch. I chose Restaurant Bab Ssour, recommended for its traditional Moroccan food. I sat on the terrace, enjoying the view of the square and the surrounding Rif Mountains. I ordered a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, and a glass of mint tea. The food was delicious, and the tea was sweet and refreshing. It was the perfect way to recharge before continuing my exploration.

The square itself is a fascinating place to people-watch. Locals and tourists mingled, chatting and laughing. Children played in the square, chasing pigeons and kicking a ball. I watched as a group of musicians played traditional Moroccan music, their melodies filling the air. It was a lively and vibrant scene, a snapshot of daily life in Chefchaouen.

Exploring History at the Kasbah

After lunch, I visited the Kasbah, a fortress built in the 15th century to defend the town from Portuguese invasions. The Kasbah is a simple but imposing structure, surrounded by gardens on the interior and exterior. Inside, I explored the ethnographic museum, which contains antique weapons, musical instruments, and photographs of the old town. It was fascinating to learn about the history and culture of the region. The Kasbah offered a glimpse into Chefchaouen's past, a reminder of its strategic importance and its resilience in the face of adversity.

The gardens surrounding the Kasbah were a peaceful oasis, filled with flowers and trees. I sat on a bench, enjoying the shade and the tranquility. It was a perfect spot to reflect on my first impressions of Chefchaouen.

Shopping at Blue. concept store

Before heading back to the hotel, I decided to do some shopping. I stopped by Blue. concept store, a local shop known for its unique handcrafted items. I browsed through the selection of jewelry, clothing, and home decor items, admiring the craftsmanship and the attention to detail. I ended up buying a small ceramic bowl, painted in the traditional blue colors of Chefchaouen. It was a perfect souvenir, a reminder of my first day in this magical city.

The shop owner was friendly and helpful, telling me about the history of the store and the local artisans who created the items. It was a personal touch that made the shopping experience even more enjoyable.

Dinner at Chez Hicham

As evening approached, I made my way to Chez Hicham for dinner. The restaurant, located near Plaza Uta el-Hamman, had been recommended for its lovely terrace and Moroccan cuisine. I secured a spot on the terrace, which offered a beautiful view of the Kasbah and the bustling square below. The atmosphere was lively, with the sounds of chatter and music filling the air.

I ordered a tagine with chicken and vegetables, a classic Moroccan dish. The flavors were rich and aromatic, a delightful blend of spices and herbs. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the vegetables were perfectly cooked. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, a perfect ending to a long day of exploring.

As I savored my dinner, I watched the sunset over the Rif Mountains, the sky painted in hues of orange and pink. The lights of Chefchaouen began to twinkle, creating a magical atmosphere. I felt grateful to be here, experiencing the beauty and charm of this unique city.

Final Thoughts on Day One

My first day in Chefchaouen was an unforgettable experience. I fell in love with the blue-washed streets, the friendly locals, and the delicious food. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, especially as I plan to visit Ras El Ma and the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen. I might even check out Bar Oum Rabie for a drink in the evening. For now, I'm content to rest and dream of blue horizons.

Berlin feels a world away, but I'm already feeling at home here in the Blue Pearl. I'm so glad I decided to embark on this solo adventure. It's exactly the kind of experience I needed to recharge and reconnect with my love for travel.
