Discover the beauty of Jebel Bouhachem, savor local flavors, and find unique crafts in Chefchaouen's vibrant markets.
Blue Hues and Mountain Views
Today was a delightful mix of nature, culture, and culinary exploration here in Chefchaouen. I ventured beyond the blue walls of the medina and into the surrounding landscapes, discovering more about the region's natural beauty and local craftsmanship. It’s amazing how much this little blue pearl has to offer, and I'm soaking in every moment!
My day began with a hearty breakfast at BILMOS. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea, which was the perfect start before heading out for a hike. The restaurant had a blend of Moroccan and Italian cuisine, and it seems to be a popular spot, and I can see why. It had a lovely terrace and free Wi-Fi, which is always a plus for a travel blogger like myself!

Exploring Jebel Bouhachem
My main adventure for the day was a visit to the Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. It was about a 30-minute drive from Chefchaouen, and the journey itself was scenic, with glimpses of the Rif Mountains. The reserve is a sprawling protected area, aiming to conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable development. As I started my hike, I was immediately struck by the contrast to the blue city I'd left behind. Here, the landscape was lush and green, with forests of oak and maritime pines. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the bustling medina.

The trails in Jebel Bouhachem are diverse, catering to different skill levels. I chose a moderate path that wound through charming local villages and past small waterfalls. Although I didn’t spot any Barbary macaques, which are known to inhabit the area, I was still captivated by the rich birdlife. Apparently, there are almost 100 recorded species of birds in the park!
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
The hike was invigorating, and I felt a sense of accomplishment as I reached a viewpoint overlooking the valleys. It was a perfect moment to pause, take some photos, and simply breathe in the beauty of Morocco. I was glad I wore my comfortable walking shoes; they were essential for navigating the varied terrain.
Lunch at Dar El Salam
After my hike, I was ready for a satisfying lunch. I headed to Restaurant Dar El Salam, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional décor that added to the ambiance. I decided to try a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and aromatic, and the portion was generous. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of hiking.

Shopping for Crafts
In the afternoon, I ventured into the heart of Chefchaouen to explore the local crafts scene. I had heard that Chefchaouen is a hub for artisans, and I was eager to see what treasures I could find. The medina was bustling with activity, and the narrow alleyways were lined with shops selling a variety of goods.
I spent a couple of hours wandering through the markets, admiring the intricate woodwork, colorful textiles, and unique leather goods. I found a few shops offering Chefchaouen crafts, each brimming with unique finds. Haggling is part of the culture here, and I enjoyed the friendly banter with the shopkeepers as I negotiated prices. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven rug and a couple of leather purses as souvenirs – and perhaps a little something for Maximilian back in Berlin.

There were a lot of shops with carved doors, tables, furniture, and decorations. I was particularly drawn to the Amazigh rugs, blankets, and bedspreads, all made from wool. The brightly colored bedspreads and aprons were especially eye-catching. I also saw a lot of metal objects like lanterns and copper lamps, as well as leather goods such as slippers, belts, and handbags. It was a feast for the eyes, and I could have easily spent the entire day shopping!
Dinner at Assaada
As evening approached, I made my way to Assaada for dinner. This restaurant is known for its cozy rooftop terrace and friendly staff. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and I felt right at home as I settled in for a meal. I opted for the lemon chicken tagine, which came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. The flavors were exquisite, and the portion was generous. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

During dinner, I reflected on my experiences in Chefchaouen so far. The city has a unique charm that is hard to resist. The blue-washed walls, the friendly locals, and the stunning natural surroundings have all contributed to an unforgettable experience. I’m so glad I decided to embark on this solo adventure, pushing myself to explore beyond my comfort zone.
Tomorrow's Plans
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Chefchaouen's cultural and historical sites. I'm particularly interested in visiting Park Sidi Abdelhamid and Bab El Ain. I also intend to check out Cafe Clock, which I hear is a must-visit spot for both its food and atmosphere. It’s supposed to be great for a relaxing evening.
As I write this, I'm back at Hotel Barcelona, feeling content and grateful for the day's adventures. Chefchaouen has exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. It’s amazing how much this little blue pearl has to offer, and I'm soaking in every moment!

Before I turn in for the night, I’m going to make sure I have my camera ready for tomorrow. I also need to remember to buy a power adapter; I’ve been borrowing one from the hotel, but it’s time I got my own. And perhaps a portable phone charger, as my phone battery has been struggling to keep up with all the photos I’ve been taking.
Goodnight from Chefchaouen! I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you all.
