A Day of Blue Hues and Culinary Adventures

Today was a beautiful blend of tranquility and taste in Chefchaouen. It’s amazing how a change of scenery can really invigorate the soul, especially when that scenery is painted in a thousand shades of blue. From peaceful moments overlooking the city to savoring the local cuisine, today was a perfect example of why I decided to embark on this solo journey.



My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant Marisco Twins. It's conveniently located and I was eager to fuel up before exploring more of Chefchaouen. The café had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast, which gave me a delightful taste of the local flavors to start my day. It was a great way to prepare for the day’s adventures.

With a full stomach, I set off to explore Park Sidi Abdelhamid. The park is a bit of a walk uphill, but the views were more than worth the effort. As I ascended, the panoramic views of Chefchaouen began to unfold, revealing the city's iconic blue buildings nestled against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. The fresh air and serene atmosphere made it the perfect spot for reflection.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are made when you allow yourself to simply be present in a new place.

I spent a good hour wandering through the park, taking photos and soaking in the scenery. There were a few other travelers around, but the park was large enough that I could easily find my own quiet corner. It was a welcome escape from the bustling medina, offering a moment of peace and solitude.



Next on my list was Bab El Ain, one of the historic gates of Chefchaouen. As I approached, I couldn't help but marvel at its architecture and significance. Bab El Ain marks the boundary between the old city and the more modern areas, and it's a bustling hub of activity. I took some time to simply observe the locals going about their day, absorbing the vibrant energy of the city.

The gate itself is a beautiful structure, and I learned that its name refers to a nearby spring that once provided water to the area. It's fascinating to think about the history that has unfolded around this gate, from its role in defending the city to its current status as a symbol of Chefchaouen's cultural heritage. I was also reading that each door in Chefchaouen tells a unique story, reflecting the fusion of cultures that have shaped the city over centuries. Each gate has its own characteristics, such as “Bab Al-Ain” which gained its fame as the closest point of separation between the depth of the fortified city and the “colonial” modern city, established by the Spanish when they entered Chefchaouen in 1920.



For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Jbaria, recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy, inviting atmosphere, and I was immediately greeted by the friendly staff. I decided to try the tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and complex, and the portion size was generous. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic cuisine.

After lunch, I spent some time wandering through the medina, getting lost in its maze of blue alleyways. I stumbled upon hidden courtyards, artisan workshops, and colorful shops selling everything from spices to textiles. It was a sensory overload in the best possible way, and I loved the feeling of discovery around every corner. I even picked up a few souvenirs to bring back to Max and to remind me of my time in Chefchaouen.



As the afternoon wore on, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Cafe Clock, known for its relaxed atmosphere and live music. The café had a bohemian vibe, and I found a comfortable spot on the rooftop terrace. I ordered a refreshing mint tea and enjoyed the panoramic views of the city as the sun began to set. The call to prayer echoed through the valley, adding to the magical atmosphere.

For dinner, I chose Restaurant Triana, drawn in by its reputation for live music and traditional Moroccan dishes. The restaurant had a warm, inviting ambiance, and I was seated at a table near the musicians. I ordered a seafood dish, which was expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. The live music added to the overall experience, creating a memorable evening.

As I enjoyed my meal, I couldn't help but reflect on my day in Chefchaouen. From the serene beauty of Park Sidi Abdelhamid to the vibrant energy of the medina, it had been a day filled with unforgettable experiences. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique city and immerse myself in its culture.



Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Kasbah and the City View Point. I’m also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at the B & H Art Shop. I’m excited to see what other treasures Chefchaouen has in store for me. I am really looking forward to sharing more of my adventures with you all!

Back at Hotel Barcelona, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Chefchaouen had truly captured my heart, and I knew that I would carry its blue hues and vibrant spirit with me long after I left. I made sure to charge my camera and phone – I wouldn’t want to forget my power adapter again! I also made some notes in my journal, ensuring I could capture all the details of this magical day.
