Solo Adventure in the Enchanted Forests of Yakushima
Day 5: Chasing Waterfalls and Finding Serenity in Yakushima's Heart
Discover the majestic Senpiro and Ryujin Falls, savor local flavors, and find tranquility in Yakushima's enchanting landscapes.
Whispers of Waterfalls
Today was a symphony of nature's finest compositions. From cascading waterfalls to tranquil forests, Yakushima revealed more of its serene beauty. It's days like these that remind me why I traded my cozy life in Helsinki for a solo adventure, seeking solace and inspiration in the heart of Japan.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Matsutake. The aroma of soba noodles filled the air, promising a comforting start to my explorations. It’s a popular noodle restaurant in the southwest of Yakushima. The family-run restaurant had low tables in an old traditional Japanese building. I enjoyed warm soba noodles with tempura. The noodles were homemade and fresh. Fuelled up, I set off to chase some waterfalls.
First on the itinerary was Senpiro Falls. The drive itself was a scenic prelude, with winding roads offering glimpses of the island's lush vegetation. As I approached the falls, the sound of the cascading water grew louder, heightening my anticipation. Senpiro Falls is one of the most impressive waterfalls in Yakushima. The waterfall plummets 60 meters over a large V-shaped granite wall. I took the short walk from the carpark to the viewing area to admire the falls. The granite rock is so large that it’s said to be the size of a thousand rice fields. The walkway going closer to the falls was inaccessible. I took my time soaking in the grandeur, snapping photos, and simply breathing in the misty air. The sheer scale of the valley carved by the water was awe-inspiring.

The beauty of nature lies not just in its grandeur, but in its ability to evoke a sense of peace and wonder within us.
Next, I ventured towards Ryujin Falls. Located not too far from Senpiro, these falls offered a different, more intimate experience. Ryujin Falls is located along a small country road. Ryujin means Dragon King waterfall, named because it looks like a dragon with its mouth fully opened. While the view wasn't as expansive, the falls had a serene, almost mystical quality. The surrounding forest was incredibly peaceful, and I enjoyed the short walk to the viewing point. I could see Ryujin Falls from the road. The enchanting scenery is especially mesmerizing during the rainy season when the water flow is at its peak. The sound of rushing water harmonizes with the rustling leaves, creating a soothing soundtrack to my visit.

Lunch was at Kamogawa Restaurant. I had read about their flying fish dishes, a local specialty, and was eager to try them. The restaurant had a retro atmosphere. I decided to try the local flying fish dish. I also tried Kamenote, Japanese goose barnacle. It was surprisingly good, with a slightly shrimp-like taste. The restaurant offers a variety of high-quality local fish and Japanese dishes. It was a great experience for me.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore Gallery KIANU. The gallery is run by a photographer. It's a shop and gallery that sends out art pieces and original products from Yakushima. The interior uses Yakushima's local cedar. I browsed the collection of pottery and crafts, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I ended up buying a small, hand-painted bowl as a memento of my time on the island.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Shiosai for dinner. This Japanese restaurant specializes in tempura. The restaurant prides itself on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I savored each bite, appreciating the delicate balance of flavors and textures. The chef masterfully balances textures and flavors to create dishes that are both visually stunning and incredibly delicious. I paired my meal with a local sake, enhancing the experience. The staff were attentive and the atmosphere serene, making it a perfect end to a day of exploration.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall and Inakahama Beach. I'm looking forward to learning more about these gentle creatures and soaking up the sun on the sandy shore. It's nesting season, so hopefully, I will see some sea turtles.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the beauty and tranquility that Yakushima offers. It's a place where nature's wonders are on full display, inviting you to slow down, breathe deep, and reconnect with the world around you. This solo journey is turning out to be exactly what my soul needed. Perhaps Markus and Aino would enjoy this someday.
I'm also glad I remembered to bring my journal today. I've been jotting down notes each evening, and I know I'll cherish these memories for years to come. I still wish I hadn't forgotten the insect repellent, though. Those little critters are relentless!
