Solo Adventure in the Enchanted Forests of Yakushima
Day 4: Whispers of Ancient Cedars: A Day in Yakusugi Land
Immerse yourself in Yakushima's ancient forests with a hike through Yakusugi Land and discover the island's maritime history at a lighthouse.
Echoes of the Forest
Today, I ventured deeper into Yakushima's soul, seeking connection with its ancient forests and a broader perspective from its coastal edges. The island has a way of making you feel both insignificant and deeply connected to something much larger than yourself. It's a humbling experience, one that I'm eager to share.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan. The market was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the island's delicacies. I decided on the grilled flying fish set. It was crispy, savory, and the perfect fuel for a day of hiking. The market itself is a great place to find souvenirs and get a sense of the local culture. I savored every bite, knowing that today's adventures would require plenty of energy. It's a small market, but it has a lot of local food to offer.
With a full stomach, I headed towards Yakusugi Land, eager to immerse myself in the ancient cedar forests. The drive itself was stunning, with lush greenery on either side of the road. Upon arriving, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the trees. These weren't just old trees; they were living monuments, witnesses to centuries of history. I chose the 150-minute course, a medium difficulty trail that promised a good balance of challenge and accessibility.

The trail wound through the forest, sometimes on wooden walkways and other times on more rugged mountain paths. The air was thick with the scent of cedar and damp earth, and the silence was broken only by the sound of birdsong and the occasional rustle of leaves. I passed by the Buddhasugi, Futagosugi and Sennensugi, each with its own unique character and story. The sunlight filtering through the canopy created an ethereal glow, illuminating the moss-covered forest floor. I felt like I had stepped into another world, a realm of ancient spirits and natural wonders.
In the heart of Yakushima, time seems to slow down, allowing you to connect with the enduring spirit of the forest.
There were a few other hikers on the trail, but for the most part, I felt like I had the forest to myself. It was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Helsinki, and I found myself lost in thought, contemplating the resilience of nature and the fleeting nature of human existence. I thought of Markus and Aino, wondering if they would enjoy this tranquil place as much as I did. I made a mental note to bring them here someday, to share the magic of Yakushima with my family. Perhaps we could even try some berry picking in the forests, just like we do back home.
After a few hours of hiking, I emerged from Yakusugi Land feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. The forest had worked its magic, calming my mind and invigorating my soul. It was time for lunch, and I decided to try At Pesca, a restaurant known for its island beach vibes and delicious Japanese dishes. The restaurant was decorated with a Hawaii theme, which felt a bit out of place in Japan, but the food was excellent. I ordered a vegetable tempura bowl and a glass of local passion fruit juice. It was the perfect combination of savory and sweet, and the juice was incredibly refreshing.

With lunch finished, I set off towards the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The lighthouse is located on the northwestern side of the island, offering panoramic views of the coastline and the Pacific Ocean. The drive to the lighthouse was beautiful, with winding roads and stunning coastal scenery. As I approached the lighthouse, I could hear the waves crashing against the rocks below. The white tower stood tall against the blue sky, a beacon of hope and guidance for sailors.

I climbed to the top of the lighthouse and gazed out at the vast expanse of the ocean. The view was breathtaking, with the rugged coastline stretching out in both directions. I could see the ancient forests in the distance, a reminder of the island's incredible biodiversity. The lighthouse has watched over passing ships for over a century since its light was first lit in 1897. I felt a sense of awe and wonder, contemplating the power of nature and the insignificance of human endeavors.
After spending some time at the lighthouse, I decided to head back towards Anbo, stopping at Ambar for a drink. It's described as a lively dart bar. I opted for a local craft beer and chatted with some of the locals. It was a great way to unwind after a long day of exploring, and I enjoyed hearing stories about the island and its people.

For dinner, I chose SamPotei, a modern izakaya known for its local dishes and jazzy vibes. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with wooden furniture, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. I ordered the Ume Suisho, a Japanese delicacy made of fish cartilage marinated with ume plum, and some scallops. The food was delicious, and the service was attentive and friendly. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, I reflected on the day's adventures. I had hiked through ancient forests, gazed out at the vast ocean, and sampled the local cuisine. I had connected with nature, with history, and with the people of Yakushima. It was a day that I would never forget.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Senpiro Falls and Ryujin Falls, hoping to witness more of Yakushima's natural beauty. I'm also looking forward to visiting Gallery KIANU, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to take back home. I'm sure it will be another day filled with wonder and adventure.
