Embark on a captivating journey through Talassemtane National Park, discovering hidden waterfalls, local crafts, and Moroccan flavors in Chefchaouen.
Nature's Embrace: A Day of Hiking and Discovery
After two days of wandering the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen, I felt a strong pull to explore the natural beauty surrounding this unique city. Today, I ventured into the Rif Mountains to visit Talassemtane National Park and the famed Akchour Waterfalls. I was eager to trade the vibrant hues of the city for the greens and blues of nature, and to stretch my legs after so much meandering through the Medina.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Chez Aziz. Remembering some online reviews, I decided to try their Moroccan pancakes with honey and a strong coffee. It was the perfect fuel for a day of hiking! The staff were incredibly welcoming, and I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere before setting off. Fueled up and ready to go, I set off towards the mountains. I made sure to pack my camera, comfortable shoes (essential!), and plenty of water, learning from my previous travel mishaps. I even remembered the sunscreen this time!
The journey to Talassemtane National Park was an experience in itself. The winding roads offered stunning panoramic views of the Rif Mountains. As we drove higher, the landscape transformed from arid hills to lush forests. The air grew crisper and cleaner, a welcome change from the bustling city. The park covers a vast area, boasting diverse flora and fauna. I was particularly excited about the prospect of seeing some of the local wildlife, like the Barbary macaques, though I knew it would be a matter of luck.
Upon arriving at the park entrance, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. Towering peaks, deep gorges, and cascading waterfalls dominated the landscape. I chose the trail leading to the Akchour Waterfalls, a popular hike known for its natural beauty. The trail was well-maintained but did involve some moderately challenging sections. I took my time, enjoying the scenery and the fresh mountain air.
The beauty of Chefchaouen extends far beyond its blue walls, beckoning adventurers to explore the untamed landscapes of Talassemtane National Park.
The hike to Akchour was nothing short of magical. The path followed the river, crossing it several times via small bridges and stepping stones. The sound of rushing water was constant, creating a soothing and refreshing ambiance. The vegetation was incredibly lush, with moss-covered rocks and trees creating a fairytale-like atmosphere. Along the way, I passed several small stalls selling refreshments and local crafts. I stopped for a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, savoring the sweet and tangy flavor.
As I neared the Akchour Waterfalls, the trail became steeper and more rugged. The anticipation grew with each step, fueled by glimpses of the cascading water through the trees. Finally, I reached the main waterfall, and it was even more breathtaking than I had imagined. The water plunged down from a great height into a crystal-clear pool below. I spent some time simply admiring the view, feeling the spray on my face and listening to the thunderous roar of the falls.

I even braved the chilly water for a quick dip – invigorating is an understatement! Apparently, during the summer months the water can be a bit sparse, so I felt lucky to be able to enjoy the falls in their full glory.
After soaking in the beauty of Akchour, I began my descent. The hike back was just as enjoyable, with the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the mountains. I passed several other hikers, exchanging smiles and words of encouragement. There were a few spots where vendors offered tagine. The aroma was amazing, but I decided to hold off for dinner back in Chefchaouen.
Back in Chefchaouen, with tired but happy feet, I decided to explore the local crafts scene. I wandered through the Medina, browsing the many shops selling traditional Moroccan goods. I was particularly drawn to the blue pottery, a signature of Chefchaouen. I picked up a small bowl as a souvenir, a reminder of my time in this beautiful city. I also admired the handwoven textiles, the intricate leather goods, and the colorful spices. It was tempting to buy everything, but I restrained myself, knowing I had limited space in my backpack.
For dinner, I chose Mandala, a restaurant recommended for its relaxed atmosphere and varied menu. I opted for a Moroccan tagine with chicken and vegetables, a classic dish that never disappoints. The tagine was flavorful and aromatic, and the portion was generous. The service was friendly and efficient, and I enjoyed the cozy ambiance of the restaurant.
Before heading back to Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, I stopped at a local bakery for a sweet treat. I selected a few traditional Moroccan pastries, indulging in the rich flavors and textures. As I savored the sweets, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the breathtaking scenery of Talassemtane National Park to the vibrant atmosphere of Chefchaouen's Medina, it had been a day filled with discovery and delight.

One thing I've noticed, and perhaps it's because I'm traveling solo, is how open people are to sharing stories. I met a fellow hiker from Spain who was tracing his family's roots in Morocco, and a couple from Argentina who were on a year-long backpacking trip. These chance encounters add so much to the travel experience, reminding me that the world is full of interesting people with unique stories to tell.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Chefchaouen itself. The Kasbah and the colorful tiles are high on my list. I'm also looking forward to finding a cozy spot to watch the sunset. But for now, I'm content to relax and reflect on the beauty of this magical place. I am looking forward to breakfast at Café Sindibad, lunch at Restaurant Hamsa, and dinner at Restaurant Bab Kasaba. I am also hoping to wind down at the bar called Sunset at sunset.
As I prepare for my fourth day in Chefchaouen, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had so far. This solo trip has been a journey of self-discovery, and I'm excited to see what the remaining days have in store. While Hans and Sophie are always in my thoughts, I know they would be happy to see me embracing this adventure and immersing myself in the beauty and culture of Morocco.
I also made sure to stop by Assaada for lunch. It was a great experience and the food was delicious. After lunch, I went to Chefchaouen Crafts to get some souvenirs. I was able to find some unique items that I know my family will love. The prices were reasonable, and the shopkeepers were very friendly.
