Blue Walls and Ancient Tales

Today was all about diving deeper into Chefchaouen's story, beyond the captivating blue that blankets everything. I wanted to understand the history etched into its walls, taste its authentic flavors, and experience the magic that makes this place so special. It was a day of exploration, culinary delights, and simply soaking in the atmosphere of this unique Moroccan gem.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Sindibad. The view overlooking Place Outa el Hammam was the perfect backdrop as I enjoyed traditional Moroccan pancakes and mint tea. It’s amazing how a simple breakfast can feel so special when enjoyed in such a picturesque setting. The café had a lovely terrace, and the weather was just perfect for enjoying the morning breeze.

After breakfast, I headed to the Kasbah. This 15th-century fortress stands as a testament to Chefchaouen’s rich history. Built to protect the town from invaders, it now houses an ethnological museum. As I wandered through the exhibits, I was fascinated by the artifacts, musical instruments, and photographs that offered a glimpse into the region's past. The Kasbah has served as a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and even a prison. It's incredible to think of all the stories these walls could tell.

The Kasbah isn't just about history; it's also a place of beauty. The lush gardens, with their tranquil fountains, provided a peaceful escape from the bustling streets. I climbed the tower for panoramic views of the medina, a sea of blue stretching out before me. From up there, I could see the Rif Mountains in the distance, their rugged peaks adding to the town's dramatic setting.

To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.

Leaving the Kasbah, I decided to explore a bit more of the medina, and stumbled upon Tuiles colorées. This vibrant mosaic of colorful tiles caught my eye, a beautiful contrast to the blue that dominates most of the town. It was a perfect spot for some photos, and I enjoyed admiring the intricate patterns and designs. It’s these little unexpected discoveries that make traveling so rewarding.

For lunch, I chose Restaurant Hamsa, drawn in by the delicious smells wafting from its kitchen. This place is known for its Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. I opted for the falafel plate, which came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The rooftop view of the main square was an added bonus. It was a delightful meal, and the friendly staff made me feel right at home.

In the late afternoon, with the sun beginning to dip lower in the sky, I decided to find a spot to enjoy a drink and soak in the views. Sunset at Sunset seemed like the perfect choice. This bar is known for its breathtaking sunset views and relaxed atmosphere. I ordered a refreshing orange juice and found a cozy spot on the terrace. As the sun began to set, the sky was painted with vibrant colors, casting a warm glow over the blue city. It was a magical moment, and I felt incredibly grateful to be there.

For dinner, I ventured to Restaurant Bab Kasaba. The restaurant was warm and inviting, and I decided to try a traditional tagine. It was rich with flavor, and the perfect way to end the day. I savored every bite, reflecting on all the beauty and history I had encountered throughout the day. It’s funny, I sometimes feel guilty when I travel solo, like I should be sharing these experiences with Hans and Sophie. But then I remember how much I grow and learn on these trips, and I know I’ll bring those experiences back home with me.

As I walked back to Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, the streets were quiet and peaceful. The air was cool and crisp, and the stars were beginning to twinkle in the night sky. I couldn’t help but smile, feeling content and grateful for another incredible day in Chefchaouen.
