Day 2: A Day of Discovery in Chefchaouen: Waterfalls, Views, and Ancient Crafts
Discover Chefchaouen's hidden gems: from the refreshing Ras El Ma waterfall to panoramic city views and the Ethnographic Museum.
Chasing Waterfalls and City Views
Today was all about soaking in the essence of Chefchaouen, beyond its famous blue walls. It was a day filled with the sounds of cascading water, panoramic vistas, and a deep dive into the region's rich cultural heritage. I was eager to explore beyond the Medina, and Chefchaouen certainly didn't disappoint.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Al Wiam [Breakfast]. Fuelled up with traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee, Hans and I, along with our friends, set off to explore Ras El Ma [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner].
Ras El Ma, meaning Head of the Water in Arabic, is more than just a spring; it’s the lifeblood of Chefchaouen. Located on the eastern edge of the medina, the spring provides fresh mountain water to the town, creating a communal hub where locals gather to wash clothes and socialize. The sound of the water was so refreshing, and it was fascinating to see how integral this place is to the daily lives of the people here. The spring was the cornerstone that led to the construction of Chefchaouen and served as the town's only source of drinking water. It also once powered the water mills along the stream and irrigated the surrounding farms. The waterfalls weren't massive, but their gentle cascades created a tranquil oasis.

The source of Ras El-Maa is managed by the National Office of Drinking Water (ONEP) and has become a tourist attraction. It’s a spot where fresh mountain water flows into the town, offering a refreshing escape and a glimpse into local life. I couldn't help but wonder about the stories these waters could tell, having sustained the town for centuries. It's amazing to think that this spring was the reason Chefchaouen exists.
After spending some time at Ras El Ma, we decided to hike up to the City View Point [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]. The trail started near Ras El Maa, and the views along the way were already incredible. As we ascended, the blue hues of Chefchaouen unfolded beneath us, set against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains. The path was a bit steep in places, but totally manageable, and we took plenty of breaks to catch our breath and snap photos. I made sure to wear my comfortable walking shoes, remembering how much I walked through Berlin, which was a great choice.

Reaching the City View Point was absolutely worth the climb. From this vantage point, the entire blue city stretched out before us, a mesmerizing tapestry of cobalt and azure. The contrast between the vibrant blue buildings and the earthy tones of the surrounding mountains was stunning. It was the perfect spot for some panoramic photos, and I made sure to capture the scene in all its glory. I could see why this spot is so popular with photographers; the light was just magical.
Sometimes, the most breathtaking views come after the most challenging climbs.
After soaking in the views, we made our way back down into the medina for lunch at Chez Aziz [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]. The tagines were delicious, and we enjoyed some refreshing mint tea while discussing our next adventure [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]. With our bellies full, we decided to immerse ourselves in the local culture at the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner].
Explore the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen, a captivating showcase of Morocco's vibrant culture, history, and local craftsmanship.
Housed within the Kasbah, the Ethnographic Museum offered a fascinating insight into the history and traditions of the Rif region. The museum is located in the Kasbah, which was built in 1471 by Rachid Ben Ali to protect Chefchaouen. The Kasbah has served as a governor's residence, a military arsenal, and even a prison. The museum itself was established in 1985 and showcases a diverse collection of artifacts.
Inside, we explored exhibits featuring traditional costumes, jewelry, musical instruments, and ancient weapons. It was amazing to see the intricate craftsmanship and learn about the Berber, Arab, and Andalusian influences that have shaped the region. The museum also had workshops dedicated to various crafts like plaster carving, mosaic work, and carpentry. I was particularly drawn to the displays of traditional clothing, imagining the lives of the people who once wore them. The museum also organizes cultural events and workshops.
The Ethnographic Museum is a treasure trove of local culture and heritage. It is housed in a traditional Moroccan building and features artifacts such as traditional clothing, crafts, and tools used by the local Berber community. Each exhibit tells a story, offering insights into the customs, traditions, and daily life of the region. The building itself is an example of traditional Moroccan architecture, with an Andalusian-style garden.
After the museum, we wandered through the blue-washed streets, eventually stumbling upon Jabir Shop Chefchaouen [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]. This delightful gift shop was filled with handmade treasures, from pottery to textiles, each reflecting the unique artistry of the region. The owner was incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the crafts and the artisans who created them. I picked up a beautiful ceramic bowl as a souvenir, a reminder of the vibrant colors and rich culture of Chefchaouen. He told us that Jabir Shop showcases the rich craftsmanship and cultural heritage of Morocco.

For dinner, we decided on Mandala [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]. I had heard great things about it, and it was the perfect way to end a day of exploring. Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Chefchaouen had to offer beyond its blue walls. The natural beauty of Ras El Ma, the panoramic views from the City View Point, and the cultural immersion at the Ethnographic Museum all contributed to a deeper understanding and appreciation of this enchanting town [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]. I’m so glad we ventured out to see these places, as they gave us a more complete picture of Chefchaouen [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner].

Tomorrow, we are planning to explore the Blue Medina Tours, Bouzafer Mosque and Bab El Ain. I am particularly interested in visiting the Bouzafer Mosque because of the architecture [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]. And I am looking forward to having Sunset at sunset [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner].
Missing sunglasses today was a slight hiccup, but nothing a quick purchase tomorrow can't fix. I am also reminded that I need a power adapter for Morocco [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]. I also need to remember that I need to buy more sunscreen tomorrow [Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner]. Overall, today was amazing.
