A Day of Discovery in the Blue Pearl

Today was all about soaking in the essence of Chefchaouen. After four days in this mesmerizing blue city, I felt like I was finally finding my rhythm here. It's funny how a place can slowly seep into your soul, revealing its secrets one cobblestone at a time. We set out this morning with a simple plan: to see the city from its highest point, delve into its history, and maybe, just maybe, find the perfect souvenir. Little did I know, today would be a tapestry of breathtaking views, ancient stories, and the simple joy of wandering with my family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tissemlal. I savored every bite of the traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for our climb to the City View Point. Liesel was especially excited, her little legs practically buzzing with anticipation. Hans, ever the pragmatist, made sure we all had plenty of water and sunscreen – essentials for a day of exploring. After breakfast we headed to the City View Point. The hike was invigorating, a bit steep in places, but so worth it. As we ascended, the panoramic views of Chefchaouen unfolded before us, a breathtaking tapestry of blue hues cascading down the Rif Mountains. It was truly a sight to behold, and I couldn't help but snap photo after photo, trying to capture the magic of this unique city.
Sometimes, the most beautiful views are those earned with a little bit of sweat and a whole lot of wonder.

After taking in the views at the City View Point, we made our way back down to explore the Kasbah. This 15th-century fortress stands as a testament to Chefchaouen’s rich history. Built to protect the city from invaders, it now houses a fascinating museum showcasing the region’s culture and art. Liesel was captivated by the displays of traditional clothing and musical instruments, while Hans, with his keen interest in history, poured over the exhibits detailing the Kasbah's strategic importance. I was particularly drawn to the architecture, a beautiful example of Moroccan design with its intricate details and sturdy walls. Exploring the Kasbah offered a tangible connection to the past, a reminder of the people who had walked these same paths centuries before. We took our time wandering through the courtyards and climbing the towers, imagining what life must have been like within these walls so long ago. The Kasbah of Chefchaouen was built in 1471 by Moulay Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami. The Kasbah has been restored several times over the centuries and has been used as a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and a prison. For foreign tourists, the entrance fee to the Kasbah is 6€.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Mounir Food, a local spot known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. We savored the flavors of tagine and couscous, each dish a symphony of spices and aromas. Liesel, surprisingly, devoured her portion of lemon chicken, declaring it her favorite Moroccan dish. Mounir Food is known for its fast service and low prices. The staff was very kind and the atmosphere was pleasant.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we ventured into the heart of the medina, eager to explore the souks and find that perfect souvenir. The narrow streets were a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and scents, a sensory overload in the best possible way. We bartered for handmade ceramics, vibrant textiles, and fragrant spices, each purchase a memento of our time in Chefchaouen. Liesel, of course, had her eye on a small, blue-glazed tagine, which she proudly declared would be the perfect addition to her play kitchen back home. I found myself drawn to a beautiful, handwoven rug, its intricate patterns telling a story of Berber craftsmanship. Hans, ever practical, haggled with the shopkeeper, eventually securing a price that made us all smile. The shop we visited was called CHAOUEN GIFTS.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the blue city, we found ourselves back at Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, our home away from home. We sat on the terrace, sipping mint tea and reflecting on the day's adventures. Liesel, tired but content, snuggled up next to me, her small hand clutching her beloved blue tagine. Hans, with a contented sigh, remarked on the beauty and tranquility of Chefchaouen, a place that had captured our hearts in unexpected ways. As I looked out over the blue-washed rooftops, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this journey, for the chance to explore new places with my family, and for the simple joy of discovering the world together. Tomorrow, we're planning to delve even deeper into the heart of Chefchaouen with Blue Medina Tours and visit Bab El Hammar. I'm excited to uncover even more hidden gems in this enchanting city. And perhaps, just perhaps, find another reason to fall in love with the Blue Pearl of Morocco.
