Day 12: A Day of Thousand Gates and Towering Views in Kyoto
Exploring Kyoto's iconic Fushimi Inari, serene Tofuku-ji, and panoramic Kyoto Tower with friends on a beautiful spring day.
Kyoto's Iconic Trio: Temples, Towers, and Tasty Treats
Today was a whirlwind of iconic Kyoto experiences, a day packed with vibrant colors, serene gardens, and panoramic views. Pieter and I, along with our friends, set out to explore some of the city's most famous landmarks, and let me tell you, Kyoto did not disappoint. It was a day of contrasts, from the fiery red of Fushimi Inari to the tranquil greens of Tofuku-ji, capped off with the modern skyline seen from Kyoto Tower. It was a day to remember, filled with laughter, exploration, and a deeper appreciation for this incredible city.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mughal Indian Restaurant & Bar. It might seem odd to start a day in Kyoto with Indian food, but the reviews were too tempting to ignore, and I must say, it was a delightful change of pace. The flavors were rich and comforting, providing the perfect fuel for our adventures ahead. Pieter particularly enjoyed the naan, declaring it the best he's had outside of Delft. After breakfast, we hopped on a train to our first destination: Fushimi Inari Taisha.
Explore the enchanting Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto's iconic Shinto shrine famous for its thousands of vibrant torii gates and breathtaking mountain trails.
Through the Thousand Gates of Fushimi Inari
Fushimi Inari Taisha is famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates, winding up the side of a mountain. The sheer number of gates is staggering, each one donated by a different company or individual. As we walked through the seemingly endless tunnel of vermilion, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The sunlight filtering through the gates created a mesmerizing effect, casting an orange glow on everything around us. Pieter, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping photos from every angle.
The hike to the top is no joke; it takes a couple of hours, and the path is mostly uphill. But the higher we climbed, the fewer people we encountered, and the more peaceful the experience became. We passed countless small shrines and statues of foxes, the messengers of Inari, the god of rice and prosperity. Though we didn't quite make it to the summit, the views overlooking Kyoto were well worth the effort.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are not about reaching the destination, but about the experiences we gather along the way.
Finding Serenity at Tofuku-ji Temple
After descending from Fushimi Inari, we were ready for a change of pace. Our next stop was Tofuku-ji Temple, known for its stunning Zen gardens and the Tsutenkyo Bridge, which offers incredible views of the surrounding valley. Tofuku-ji provided a welcome respite from the crowds at Fushimi Inari. The temple grounds were serene and peaceful, with meticulously raked gravel gardens and moss-covered landscapes.

We strolled through the gardens, admiring the intricate designs and the sense of harmony between nature and architecture. The Tsutenkyo Bridge was a highlight, offering panoramic views of the lush greenery below. Although it’s not quite autumn yet, I could imagine how spectacular it must be when the maple leaves turn fiery red. I made a mental note to return in November someday.
For lunch, we stopped at Hyoto Shijo Karasuma, a restaurant specializing in shabu-shabu. It was the perfect choice after our morning of hiking and temple-hopping. The broth was light and flavorful, and the meat was incredibly tender. We all enjoyed cooking our own vegetables and meat in the simmering pot, savoring each bite. It was a fun and interactive dining experience that left us feeling satisfied and energized.
Kyoto Tower: A Modern Perspective
Our final attraction of the day was Kyoto Tower, a modern landmark that offers panoramic views of the city. After so much time spent exploring ancient temples and traditional gardens, it was interesting to see Kyoto from a different perspective. From the top of the tower, we could see the sprawling cityscape, dotted with temples, shrines, and the occasional glimpse of the surrounding mountains. It was a great way to get a sense of the city's layout and appreciate its unique blend of old and new.

Before heading up the tower, we took some time to explore the shops and restaurants at its base. I couldn't resist trying some matcha ice cream, a Kyoto specialty, while Pieter browsed the souvenir shops for a postcard to send to his parents. The tower itself is located right across from Kyoto Station, making it easily accessible and a convenient way to end our day of sightseeing. I learned that, due to zoning laws in Kyoto that keeps buildings low to the ground, Kyoto Tower offers a commanding view of the ancient capital.
Dinner tonight was at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, a restaurant housed in a beautifully restored traditional building. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the food was exquisite. We enjoyed a multi-course meal of modern Italian cuisine, with each dish beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. It was the perfect way to celebrate a day of exploration and friendship. It seems like this place is often used for wedding anniversaries, which makes sense given the atmosphere!

After dinner, we decided to check out The Common One Bar Kyoto, a hidden gem known for its expertly crafted cocktails and traditional Japanese setting. Finding the entrance was an adventure in itself, tucked away in a quiet alleyway. The bar was small and intimate, with a cozy atmosphere that invited conversation. Pieter and I tried a couple of their signature cocktails, while our friends opted for sake. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we shared today. Kyoto has a way of captivating the senses and leaving a lasting impression. Tomorrow, we're off to Osaka for a day trip, where we plan to visit Osaka Castle, explore the vibrant Namba district, and indulge in some delicious street food in Dotonbori. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us, but I know that today's memories will stay with me long after we leave Japan. I made sure to pack my sunscreen, so hopefully I won't forget any essentials tomorrow!
