Fes's Hidden Gems: A Day of Exploration

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the historical weight of Fes with moments of serene beauty. Lena and I, along with our friends, set out to explore some of the city's lesser-known treasures, each offering a unique perspective on Moroccan culture and history. From ancient weaponry to tranquil gardens and the solemnity of royal tombs, Fes revealed its many layers to us.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Maison Bleue. The riad itself is a stunning example of traditional Moroccan architecture, and the breakfast spread was equally impressive. We enjoyed a variety of local pastries, fresh fruit, and strong coffee, all served in a beautifully decorated courtyard. It felt like stepping back in time, a perfect way to start our day of exploration.

Borj Nord Museum: A Glimpse into Military History

Our first stop was the Borj Nord Museum, also known as the Museum of Arms. Perched on a hill overlooking the city, the fort itself is a sight to behold. Built in the 16th century by the Saadi dynasty, it was modeled after Portuguese fortresses, a testament to the era's military architecture. The views from the top were simply breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of Fes el Bali and the surrounding landscape.

Inside, the museum housed an impressive collection of weaponry from around the world, spanning from prehistoric times to the 20th century. As a brewery quality control specialist, I appreciated the craftsmanship and precision that went into creating these instruments of war. Lena, with her artistic eye, was fascinated by the intricate designs and historical context of each piece. The museum is home to over 5,000 pieces originating from 35 countries. One of the most remarkable items was a Saadian cannon used in the Battle of Three Kings in 1578, a pivotal moment in Moroccan history.

The beauty of Fes lies not only in its bustling medina but also in its quiet corners, where history and nature intertwine.

Jnan Sbil: An Oasis of Tranquility

After immersing ourselves in military history, we sought refuge in the serene Jnan Sbil gardens. Also known as Bou Jeloud Gardens, this green space offered a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the medina. Created in the 19th century by Sultan Moulay Hassan I, the gardens were initially reserved for the royal family before being opened to the public in 1917. Today, they stand as one of the oldest gardens in Fes and a testament to the city's rich botanical heritage.

As we strolled through the gardens, we were surrounded by a stunning array of plants and flowers. With over 3,000 species, the gardens are divided into sections representing different regions of the world, including an Andalusian Garden, a Mexican Garden, and a Bamboo Garden. Lena was particularly enchanted by the scented gardens, where the air was filled with the sweet fragrance of jasmine and orange blossoms. I found myself drawn to the tranquil water features, including fountains, canals, and even an ancient noria (water wheel). The gardens were renovated between 2006 and 2010, restoring them to their former glory. It's a true oasis in the heart of the city.

For lunch, we ventured to Dar Roumana, a riad known for its Franco-Moroccan fusion cuisine. The setting was intimate and elegant, with a beautiful courtyard and a rooftop terrace offering stunning views. The menu featured dishes made with local, seasonal produce, showcasing the best of Moroccan and French culinary traditions. I opted for the braised local rabbit with seeded mustard sauce, while Lena chose the vegetarian option, a roast pumpkin salad with tahini, yogurt, and fresh chili. Both dishes were exquisite, a perfect blend of flavors and textures. Dar Roumana is managed by Mohamed Toumi, who has a long career in hospitality, which is evident in the attention to detail and excellent service.

Marinid Tombs: A Sunset Spectacle

Our final destination for the day was the Marinid Tombs, perched on a hill overlooking Fes el Bali. These ruined tombs date back to the 14th century, serving as the final resting place for members of the Marinid dynasty. While the tombs themselves are in a state of disrepair, their historical significance and the panoramic views they offer make them a must-visit.

As we climbed the hill, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city. From the top, we could see the entire medina spread out before us, a maze of rooftops and minarets bathed in warm light. The Marinid Tombs provided a peaceful escape from the bustling streets below, a place for reflection and contemplation. It is not known exactly who is buried at the tombs, but it is believed they were meant for members of the royal family. The site is also known as a great place to hear the call to prayer broadcasting simultaneously from all the mosques in the old city.

For dinner, we decided to try Fez & Friends, a restaurant just outside the medina known for its international cuisine and cozy atmosphere. After a day of traditional Moroccan experiences, we were in the mood for something a bit different. The menu offered a variety of options, including pizza, pasta, and sandwiches, with vegetarian and vegan choices available. I opted for the falafel bowl, while Lena chose the vegetable sandwich. The food was fresh and delicious, and the prices were reasonable. The restaurant also features live music, adding to the relaxed and friendly ambiance.

After dinner, we made our way to Rooftop Nour Plazza for a nightcap. This bar offers stunning views of the city, especially at night when the lights twinkle below. It was the perfect way to end our day, sipping on mint tea and reflecting on all that we had seen and experienced.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the heart of the medina, visiting the Al Attarine Madrasa, the Nejjarine Fountain, and El Glaoui Palace. I'm particularly excited to see the intricate tilework and craftsmanship of the madrasa, while Lena is eager to explore the hidden courtyards and alleyways of the palace. We also plan to visit Cooperative Artisanal de Fes to pick up some souvenirs. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure.

As I sit here writing, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Fes with Lena and our friends. Each day brings new discoveries, new perspectives, and new memories to cherish. This trip has already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. The fact that it is April makes it even more special, as the weather is perfect for exploring, not too hot and not too cold. I'm also glad I remembered to pack my sunscreen this time!

Until tomorrow,
