Gates, Saints, and Souks: Wednesday in Fes

Today, Fes truly came alive. It was a sensory symphony, a spiritual journey, and a cultural immersion all rolled into one. Lena would have loved this, but I know she's happy back in Munich prepping the house for our return. I made sure to take extra photos for her, especially of the pottery.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Clock. I opted for the traditional Moroccan pancakes with honey and a strong coffee – fuel for the adventures ahead. Cafe Clock itself is a vibrant hub, a meeting point for locals and travelers alike. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel instantly welcome, a feeling that perfectly set the tone for the day. It reminded me a bit of some of the quirky cafes back in Czechia, places where stories are shared and friendships are forged over a simple cup of coffee.

After breakfast, we made our way to Bab Boujloud, the iconic Blue Gate. It’s more than just an entrance; it’s a statement. The intricate tilework, predominantly blue on one side and green on the other, is a feast for the eyes. The blue, I learned, represents the city of Fes, famous for its pottery, while the green symbolizes Islam. Passing through the gate felt like stepping back in time, leaving behind the modern world and entering a labyrinth of history and culture. The aromas of spices, the sounds of artisans at work, and the vibrant colors of the goods on display created an atmosphere that was both intoxicating and overwhelming.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing them with all your senses, allowing yourself to be transformed by the culture and the stories they hold.

From Bab Boujloud, we ventured deeper into the medina, our destination being the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II. This is one of the holiest shrines in Morocco, dedicated to the founder of Fes. As non-Muslims, we weren’t allowed to enter the inner sanctum, but even from the outside, the sense of reverence was palpable. I watched as devout Moroccans approached with deep respect, their faces etched with devotion. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the power of faith and tradition. I could feel the spiritual energy of the place, a sense of peace and tranquility that permeated the air.

Next on our list was the Henna Souk, a vibrant marketplace specializing in henna, pottery, and traditional cosmetics. The souk was a riot of colors and scents. The air was thick with the fragrance of spices and perfumes, and the stalls were piled high with an array of goods. I watched as women bargained for henna, their hands adorned with intricate designs. I even considered getting a small henna tattoo myself, but decided against it – perhaps next time, with Lena by my side.

Lunch was at Restaurant Tresor Fes, a recommendation from a local we met at Cafe Clock. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet corner of the medina, offering a welcome respite from the bustling streets. We sat in a cozy courtyard, surrounded by traditional Moroccan décor. I ordered a tagine with chicken and olives, while my friends opted for couscous with vegetables. The food was delicious, a perfect blend of flavors and spices. It was exactly the kind of authentic Moroccan meal I had been hoping for. It reminded me of the hearty, home-cooked meals my mother used to make back in Czechia, meals that nourished both the body and the soul.

After lunch, we spent the afternoon wandering through the medina, getting lost in its labyrinthine streets. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, ancient mosques, and bustling workshops. I watched as artisans hammered copper, wove carpets, and carved wood, their skills passed down through generations. It was a privilege to witness these age-old traditions, to see the passion and dedication that went into each and every piece.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Zen Garden for a pre-dinner drink. The Zen Garden, despite its name, was more of a stylish bar than a traditional garden. It offered a modern contrast to the ancient medina, a place where we could relax and unwind after a long day of exploring. I ordered a local beer and sat back, soaking in the atmosphere. The garden was filled with a mix of locals and tourists, all enjoying the cool evening air and the lively music. I made a mental note to bring Lena here next time; she would appreciate the chic décor and the relaxed vibe.

Dinner was at L'Amandier, a renowned restaurant known for its refined Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was located in a beautiful riad, with a stunning rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the city. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, followed by a tagine with lamb and prunes. The food was exquisite, a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Fes. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was elegant and sophisticated. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I reflect on today’s experiences, I am struck by the sheer vibrancy and richness of Fes. It is a city that assaults the senses, challenges the mind, and nourishes the soul. It is a city that I will never forget. And I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Palais Mnebhi, Place Rcif, and the Fez Bazar. I’m particularly excited about the Fez Bazar; I hope to find some unique souvenirs for Lena and the family.

Before heading back to the riad, we made a final stop at the Zen Garden for one last drink. The atmosphere was even more lively than before, with music and laughter filling the air. I sat back, sipping my beer, and watched as the city came alive in the night. Fes is a city that never sleeps, a city that is always full of surprises. And I am grateful for the opportunity to experience it, to immerse myself in its culture, and to create memories that will last a lifetime.

I am also grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my friends. Traveling with others adds another layer of richness to the journey, allowing us to share our perspectives, support each other, and create lasting bonds. I am reminded of a quote from a fellow Czech traveler, Miroslav Zikmund: “The best journey is the one that takes us back to ourselves.” And I feel that this journey to Fes is indeed taking me back to myself, reminding me of the values that are important to me, the passions that drive me, and the connections that sustain me.

As I prepare for bed, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for tomorrow. Fes has so much more to offer, so many more stories to tell. And I am eager to continue exploring, to continue learning, and to continue sharing my experiences with you, my readers. Goodnight from Fes, and until tomorrow, may your own journeys be filled with wonder and discovery.
