Exploring the Historical Charms of Fes with Friends
Day 2: Dyeing, Dining, and Discovering the Heart of Fes
Immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of Fes: explore ancient tanneries, savor Moroccan cuisine, and wander through bustling markets.
A Saturday Stroll Through Fes
Today was a sensory explosion, a deep dive into the heart of Fes that left Lena and me utterly captivated. From the pungent aroma of the tanneries to the intricate beauty of ancient architecture and the delicious flavors of Moroccan cuisine, Fes has truly awakened my senses. It’s a city where every corner tells a story, and I feel privileged to be a part of its narrative, even if just for a few days.
The day began, as all good days should, with a hearty breakfast. We ventured out to Nagham Cafe, a local spot known for its authentic Moroccan fare. The cafe was already buzzing with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to start their day. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen, a flaky pancake served with honey and cheese, while Lena chose a fruit salad with yogurt. The mint tea, of course, was a must.

Fueled up and ready to explore, our first stop was the infamous Chouara Tannery. I had read about it, seen pictures of it, but nothing could have prepared me for the real thing. As we approached the tannery, the air grew thick with a pungent smell – a mix of animal hides, dyes, and, well, other less pleasant ingredients. Fortunately, our guide handed us sprigs of fresh mint, which helped to cut through the odor. The sight before us was truly remarkable: a vast landscape of stone vats filled with colorful dyes, where men were hard at work, treating and dyeing the leather using techniques that have remained unchanged for centuries. It was a scene straight out of history, a testament to the enduring traditions of Moroccan craftsmanship.

The true beauty of Fes lies not just in its monuments, but in the everyday lives of its people, their resilience, and their unwavering commitment to preserving their heritage.
After the tannery, we sought a change of scenery at the Bou Inania Madrasa, a stunning example of Marinid architecture. The madrasa, a former Islamic school, is a masterpiece of intricate design and craftsmanship. The central courtyard, with its carved stucco patterns, vibrant zellije tilework, and wooden latticework ceiling, was breathtaking. Lena, with her background in graphic design, was particularly impressed by the geometric patterns and the harmonious blend of colors. I found myself marveling at the sheer skill and artistry of the craftsmen who had created this architectural gem centuries ago. It was a peaceful oasis amidst the bustling medina, a place for reflection and contemplation.

Next on our itinerary was a leisurely stroll along Talaa Kebira, one of the main streets of the Fes el Bali. The street was a hive of activity, with shops selling everything from spices and carpets to leather goods and traditional clothing. We wandered through the souks, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and admiring the colorful displays. I was tempted to buy a fez, the traditional Moroccan hat, but Lena convinced me that it wouldn't quite suit my style. We did, however, pick up a few souvenirs: a small tagine for Lena and some argan oil for her skincare routine.

For lunch, we had made reservations at Restaurant Dar Hatim, a family-run establishment known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant is located in a beautifully restored traditional house, with intricate tilework, carved wooden ceilings, and a tranquil courtyard. We were greeted by Karima, the owner, who welcomed us with genuine warmth and hospitality. The menu was a set three-course meal, featuring a selection of traditional Moroccan dishes. We started with a variety of Moroccan salads, followed by a delicious lamb tagine with prunes and almonds. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the prunes added a touch of sweetness that perfectly complemented the savory flavors of the dish. For dessert, we had a selection of Moroccan pastries, accompanied by mint tea.

In the late afternoon, after a day filled with sightseeing and culinary delights, we decided to unwind with a drink at Mezzanine, a stylish bar located near the Jardin Jnan Sbil. The bar had a relaxed atmosphere, with comfortable seating and a good selection of drinks. I opted for a local beer, while Lena chose a glass of Moroccan wine. As we sipped our drinks, we reflected on the day's experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this fascinating city.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Les Jardins de Sheherazade for dinner. This restaurant is set in a beautiful garden, creating a magical atmosphere. The menu offered a mix of Moroccan and international dishes, but we decided to stick with the local cuisine. I ordered a couscous salad, while Lena chose a vegetable tagine. The food was delicious, and the setting was enchanting, with the garden illuminated by lanterns and the sound of birds chirping in the background.

After dinner, we considered exploring more of the nightlife, but decided to head back to our riad to rest up for tomorrow’s adventures. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Dar Batha Museum, the Andalusian Mosque, and the Mellah. I’m particularly excited about the Dar Batha Museum, as I've heard it has a fantastic collection of Moroccan art and artifacts. And Lena is keen to explore the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, and learn about its history and culture.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences of today. Fes is a city that challenges and inspires, a place where the past and the present coexist in a vibrant tapestry of culture and tradition. I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I look forward to sharing my adventures with you all.
I am also eager to find a travel adapter, as I forgot mine, and I am running low on battery on my phone. And Lena is not happy that I forgot a portable phone charger. I guess I will need to visit Royal Accessoires tomorrow to make up for it!
