Exploring the Historical Charms of Fes with Friends
Day 1: Lost in the Labyrinth: My First Day Exploring Fes el Bali
Embark on an immersive journey through Fes, Morocco, exploring ancient medinas, artisan crafts, and culinary delights with Jiří and friends.
First Impressions of Fes
Arriving in Fes felt like stepping into another world, a sensory explosion that both thrilled and slightly overwhelmed me. The air was thick with the scent of spices, the sounds of bustling markets echoed through narrow alleyways, and the sights were a vibrant tapestry of colors and textures. Today, I explored the heart of Fes, diving headfirst into its rich history and vibrant culture. It was a day of discovery, of getting lost and found, and of savoring the unique flavors of this ancient city.
Our direct flight from Munich landed without a hitch, and after a quick taxi ride, Lena and I, along with our friends, found ourselves at the edge of Fes El Bali, the old walled city. I immediately realized that my trusty travel guidebook and comfortable walking shoes would be my best friends for the next few days. The weather in April is quite pleasant, with temperatures hovering around 20°C, making it perfect for exploring.

Our first stop was breakfast at Cafe Clock. I had heard so much about this place, and it didn't disappoint. The cafe is a Fez icon, rambling over several floors of a restored building. The atmosphere was buzzing with a mix of tourists and locals, and the menu offered a fusion of Moroccan and international dishes. I opted for the Berber eggs, a delicious mix of tomato, J'ben cheese, and herbs, while Lena enjoyed the pancake stack with caramelized banana and fresh fruit. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the Medina.

The Medina of Fes El Bali is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it's easy to see why. It's a labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways, a maze where you can easily lose your sense of direction. But that's part of the charm. Every corner turned revealed something new – a craftsman hammering intricate designs into metal, a vendor selling colorful spices, children playing in hidden courtyards. I made sure to have my camera ready, wanting to capture every detail of this sensory overload.
To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.
Navigating the Medina can be a bit daunting, but I found that the best approach was simply to embrace the chaos and let yourself get lost. Of course, it helps to have a general sense of direction, but sometimes the most rewarding experiences come from unexpected detours. We stumbled upon hidden fountains, beautifully decorated doorways, and tiny shops selling everything from traditional Moroccan slippers to intricate ceramics.
Our next destination was the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts. Housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century fondouk, a traditional caravanserai or merchant inn, the museum showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Moroccan woodwork. The intricate carvings, the detailed designs, and the sheer artistry on display were truly impressive. It was fascinating to learn about the history of woodworking in Morocco and to see the tools and techniques used by artisans for centuries. The museum itself is a work of art, with its stunning courtyard, intricate tilework, and beautifully preserved architecture.

After immersing ourselves in the world of wooden crafts, we were ready for lunch. We chose The Ruined Garden, a restaurant set in the atmospheric ruins of a courtyard house. The setting was magical, with lush greenery and the remnants of ancient walls creating a tranquil oasis in the heart of the Medina. I opted for the lamb tagine with caramelized onions and prunes, a classic Moroccan dish that was both sweet and savory. Lena enjoyed the chicken pastilla, a delicious pie filled with shredded chicken, almonds, and spices. The Ruined Garden offered not just a meal, but an experience, a chance to relax and soak in the beauty of Fes.

With our bellies full and our spirits lifted, we continued our exploration of Fes El Bali. Our final stop for the day was the Mosque and University Kairaouine, considered by many to be the oldest continuously operating university in the world. Founded in 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri, a woman of great vision and determination, the university has been a center of learning for over a thousand years. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mosque area, we were able to admire the stunning architecture from the outside and learn about the university's rich history. It's inspiring to think about the countless scholars and thinkers who have passed through these halls, contributing to the intellectual and cultural heritage of Morocco and the world.

Before dinner, I managed to squeeze in a bit of shopping at Coin Berbere Carpets & Antiques. The shop was filled with a stunning array of carpets, each with its own unique design and story. Abdul, one of the owners, was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, guiding me through the different styles and patterns. I was particularly drawn to the Azillal rugs, known for their geometric shapes and vibrant colors. While I didn't make a purchase today, I definitely have my eye on a few pieces for our home in Munich.

For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a fine dining experience at Nur. This restaurant offers a modern take on Moroccan cuisine, with a focus on innovative flavors and artistic presentation. The tasting menu was a culinary journey, with each dish a surprise and a delight. From the raw bell pepper with sauce to the baked salmon with kiwi, the flavors were bold and unexpected. The wine pairing was also excellent, with a selection of Moroccan wines that complemented the dishes perfectly. While Nur is definitely on the pricier side, it was worth it for the unique and memorable dining experience.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the Medina, we made our way back to our riad, tired but exhilarated. Fes El Bali had captivated me with its chaotic beauty, its rich history, and its vibrant culture. It was a day of getting lost and found, of savoring new flavors, and of immersing ourselves in the heart of Morocco.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Chouara Tannery, Bou Inania Madrasa, and Talaa Kebira. I'm particularly excited about seeing the tanneries, as I've heard they are a truly unique and unforgettable sight. And perhaps, we will find a nice bar to relax at the end of the day; Mezzanine looks like a good option.
I am also looking forward to sharing more of my experiences with you all as our journey unfolds. Stay tuned for more tales from the enchanting city of Fes!
