Takayama's Treasures Unveiled

Today marked the ninth day of my solo adventure in Japan, and I found myself completely charmed by the city of Takayama. It's a place where the echoes of the past resonate through the present, creating an atmosphere that's both serene and invigorating. My day was filled with exploration, discovery, and a deep appreciation for the local culture.

My morning began bright and early at the Jinya-mae Morning Markets. The air was crisp and filled with the chatter of vendors and the excited voices of fellow travelers. This market, nestled in front of the historic Takayama Jinya, offered a delightful array of local produce and crafts. It was smaller than I expected, but its charm was undeniable. The vendors, many of whom were local farmers, proudly displayed their seasonal fruits, vegetables, and vibrant flowers.

I couldn't resist purchasing a few small trinkets, handmade by an elderly woman with kind eyes and a warm smile. Supporting local artisans is something I always try to do when I travel; it feels like a more authentic way to connect with a place. I even bought a pair of traditional cloth sandals, or zori, from her. They might not fit perfectly, but the story behind them makes them a treasured souvenir.

Wandering through the market, I sampled some local delicacies, including Hida beef skewers and pickled vegetables. The flavors were so fresh and vibrant, a true testament to the region's agricultural heritage. I even spotted some unusual ingredients like potato stems and carrot leaves, which the vendors were happy to explain how to prepare. It was a delightful sensory experience that truly awakened my senses. I felt a world away from my usual mornings in Toronto.

From the bustling market, I made my way to Hida-Sashiko, a renowned shop dedicated to the art of sashiko quilting. As someone who appreciates both history and craftsmanship, I was eager to learn more about this traditional technique. The shop itself was a beautiful machiya, a traditional wooden townhouse, exuding a sense of history and artistry.

Inside, I was greeted by a gallery-like space filled with exquisite sashiko creations. From intricately patterned pouches and bags to delicate luncheon mats and tissue paper cases, each item was a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans. I was particularly drawn to the boba kurumi, adorable monkey dolls made from unique cloth. It was fascinating to see how traditional patterns were incorporated into contemporary designs.

I ended up purchasing a sashiko kit, hoping to try my hand at this ancient craft. Olivia, my wife, would absolutely love this, and I could see us spending cozy evenings together trying to master the art of sashiko. Even if my first attempt isn't perfect, I know I'll cherish the experience of learning something new and connecting with Japanese culture on a deeper level. I also picked up a few small accessories as gifts for friends back home, each one unique and carrying a piece of Hida's artistic soul.

The beauty of Takayama lies not only in its picturesque streets and historic buildings but also in the warmth and artistry of its people.

Lunchtime found me at Shirakawago Restaurant Irori, a charming eatery known for its authentic local cuisine. Fortunately, I arrived before the lunchtime rush, as this place seems to be quite popular. The restaurant had a traditional feel, with both regular tables and tatami mat seating. I opted for the Hida beef set, a local specialty, and wasn't disappointed. The beef was served raw, and I cooked it myself on a small grill, along with fresh vegetables and mushrooms. The flavors were incredible, and the entire experience felt very authentic.

The set also included a variety of other dishes, such as fermented fish, pickles, sweet cooked beef, and tofu. Each dish was a culinary adventure, offering a glimpse into the region's unique flavors. I especially enjoyed the grilled tofu skewer topped with miso, a truly delicious combination. The staff was friendly and spoke excellent English, making the experience even more enjoyable.

After lunch, I continued my culinary exploration with a visit to Soba Wakimoto, a soba noodle restaurant known for its delicious and authentic dishes. Despite being located near the bus terminal, which isn't the most scenic spot, the restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I decided to try their signature cold soba, as the weather was pleasantly warm. The noodles were perfectly cooked, with a delightful springy texture, and the dipping sauce was flavorful and refreshing.

I also couldn't resist ordering the Hida beef mini bowl, which was simply divine. The beef was tender and flavorful, perhaps even better than some of the Wagyu I've had in Kobe. The staff was friendly and accommodating, making me feel right at home. It was the perfect meal to recharge before continuing my exploration of Takayama. This was also a great place to try some local sake, but I passed on the offer, maybe tomorrow night I will find a nice bar to try some local brews.

My final culinary stop of the day was at Hakusuien for dinner, a restaurant renowned for its traditional Japanese dining experience and serene atmosphere. The wood-paneled rooms with tatami mats created an authentic setting, and the beautiful garden views added to the ambiance. I opted for one of their set meals featuring soba noodles and Hida beef. The hoba miso set, where the miso is served in clay pots and on leaves, was a particular highlight.

The flavors were rich and complex, and the presentation was exquisite. It was a truly memorable dining experience that transported me back in time. I savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and tradition that went into each dish. I was lucky to get a table without much of a wait, as this place can get quite busy.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I made a quick stop at the Kodaijin Souvenir Store, located in the Seseragi parking lot area. This store offered a wide variety of souvenirs, from Shirakawa-go specialty products to Hida folk crafts and local sake. I picked up a few last-minute gifts for family and friends, wanting to share a piece of my journey with them. I also appreciated that the store was environmentally conscious, focusing on sustainable practices.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on my experiences in Takayama. It was a day filled with vibrant markets, traditional crafts, and culinary delights. I felt a deep connection to the local culture and a profound appreciation for the beauty of this historic city. Takayama had truly captured my heart, and I knew I would carry its memories with me long after I left. I am looking forward to tomorrow, when I will be visiting the Nishi Chaya District and Ninja Weapon Museum. I am also planning on trying some local sake at Hakuraku bar. Tomorrow will be another great day!

Takayama, with its blend of tradition and modernity, has left an indelible mark on my soul. It's a place where the past comes alive, and the spirit of Japan shines brightly. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have experienced its magic and to have shared it with you all.
