Day 3: Temples, Art, and Nan's Tranquil Charm

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the spiritual with the artistic, and the panoramic with the intricate. Nan continues to surprise and delight, offering a unique tapestry of experiences that resonate deeply with my soul. I'm excited to share the highlights of our day, from mountaintop temples to riverside art, and the delicious meals that fueled our adventures.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at At Milk Nan, House of Milk. It was a delightful way to start the day. The creamy milk paired perfectly with a light pastry, giving me the energy I needed for the adventures ahead. I must admit, I even indulged in a second glass – it was that good! Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the day's itinerary.

First up was Wat Phra That Khao Noi, perched high on a hill overlooking Nan. The drive up was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the valley below. As we climbed higher, the air grew fresher, and the anticipation of reaching the summit grew stronger. Upon arrival, the panoramic view of Nan was simply breathtaking. The sprawling landscape, dotted with temples and rice paddies, was a sight to behold. The golden Buddha statue, Phra Buddha Maha Udomonkol Nantaburee Sri Nan, stood majestically, watching over the town. It was built to honor King Bhumibol and is about 9 meters tall.   We climbed the 303 steps to reach the top. The temple itself exuded a sense of peace and history, built in 1487 and housing a relic from the Buddha in its main chedi. The Burmese-Lanna pagoda added to the temple's unique charm, a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. As I stood there, gazing at the vista before me, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such beauty. It was a moment of true serenity, a reminder of the simple joys in life. I took some photos with my friends, trying to capture the magic of the moment, but I knew that no picture could truly do it justice.

After soaking in the spiritual atmosphere of Wat Phra That Khao Noi, we descended back into town, our next destination the Nan Riverside Art Gallery. This gallery, established by local artist Winai Prabripu, is a haven for art lovers, showcasing a diverse range of works from both established and emerging artists. The gallery itself is set on 13 rai of land. As we wandered through the exhibits, I was struck by the creativity and passion on display. From traditional paintings to contemporary sculptures, each piece told a story, reflecting the unique culture and spirit of Nan. I was particularly impressed by the works of HRH Princess Sirindhorn, whose paintings added a touch of royalty to the gallery.

The Nan Bua Phan home was also very interesting, honoring the artists of the Wat Phumin and Wat Nong Bua. I found myself drawn to a particular painting, a vibrant depiction of a local scene that captured the essence of Nan's rural charm. It was a piece that spoke to me, reminding me of the beauty and simplicity of life in this hidden gem of Thailand. The Nan Riverside Art Gallery truly embodies the artistic spirit of the region, and I left feeling inspired and enriched. I think it is wonderful that they also provide a space for young artists to display their work.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

For lunch, we headed to Huean Phukha, a restaurant known for its authentic Northern Thai cuisine. The restaurant itself was a charming blend of traditional and modern design, with a cozy atmosphere that made us feel right at home. The menu was a delightful array of local specialties, and we eagerly ordered a selection of dishes to share. The *sai ua* (Northern Thai sausage) was bursting with flavor, the *gaeng hung lay* (pork curry) was rich and aromatic, and the *khao soi* (curried noodle soup) was simply divine. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, a testament to the region's unique culinary heritage. As we savored the delicious flavors, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic cuisine. It was a meal that nourished both our bodies and our souls. I especially enjoyed the *แกงผักอะยิอะเยาะ* which was similar to a vegetable curry.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the Nan OTOP Centre, a treasure trove of local handicrafts and souvenirs. As a Community Engagement Coordinator, I am always interested in supporting local artisans, and this centre was the perfect place to do so. The centre was filled with a wide array of products, from hand-woven textiles to intricately carved wooden sculptures. I was particularly drawn to the silverware, a traditional craft of the region. I ended up purchasing a beautiful silver bracelet for Mere, a small token of my love and appreciation. I also picked up some dried Chinese rambi. Supporting local artisans is so important, and it's a great way to bring a piece of Nan back home with me. I think Mere will appreciate the gesture. I hope Sailosi likes the snacks I got for him too!

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Wevari Heritage for dinner. This restaurant, set along the Nan River, offered a serene and romantic ambiance. The restaurant has a modern style with a mix of local influence. The menu featured a fusion of Thai and international cuisine, and we opted for a selection of dishes that showcased the best of both worlds. The *miang pla duk* (catfish salad) was a burst of flavors, the *tom yum soup* was spicy and invigorating, and the *honey toast* was a sweet and satisfying end to the meal. The service was impeccable, and the staff went out of their way to ensure that we had a memorable dining experience. As we sat there, enjoying the gentle breeze and the soothing sounds of the river, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Wevari Heritage is also a hotel. Some reviewers mention the staff is very friendly. It seems like a nice place to stay in Nan, and I will keep it in mind if I return. They serve both American and Asian style breakfasts.

Tomorrow, we plan to venture further afield, exploring the Tham Pha Tub Forest Park and the ancient Wat Suan Tan. I'm particularly excited about the forest park, as I've heard it's a haven for nature lovers, with stunning waterfalls and lush greenery. We also plan to check out Bitter Bar. I'm sure it will be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to share it with you all. Nan, you continue to captivate me with your beauty, your culture, and your charm. Until tomorrow!

I am so happy that I remembered to bring my camera, but I forgot my sunglasses again!

I'm looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings!
