Sunday Adventures in the Blue Pearl
Today was a day of wandering, tasting, and soaking in the unique atmosphere of Chefchaouen. Isabella and I embraced the leisurely pace of a Sunday, letting the blue streets guide us to new discoveries and familiar comforts. It’s amazing how this city continues to surprise us, even after so many days of exploration.
Our day began, as many do here, with breakfast at HERMANOS. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a hearty meal. I opted for the traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with harsha, msemen, amlou, honey, jam, cheese, OJ, and mint tea. Isabella, ever the fan of Italian cuisine, chose a simple yet satisfying croissant and coffee. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was perfect for a relaxed start to our Sunday.

After breakfast, we decided to explore the culinary landscape further with a visit to مطعم داركم for lunch. This charming traditional Andalusian home, tucked away in Chefchaouen, boasts a beautiful rooftop terrace. We enjoyed a menu offering a variety of options, and the attentive service made our experience even more memorable. Isabella was particularly charmed by the antique shop located on the lower level, browsing through the collection of unique finds. The warm attention from the staff made us feel right at home.

“Chefchaouen is more than just a city painted in blue; it’s a living canvas where history, culture, and the warmth of its people blend into an unforgettable experience.”
Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring the historical El Mellah. This former Jewish quarter tells a silent story of a vibrant community that once thrived within these blue walls. As we walked through the narrow streets, I couldn't help but reflect on the layers of history embedded in every corner. The Mellah, established in the 15th century, offers a glimpse into the lives of those who sought refuge here, painting their homes in light blue as they rebuilt their lives after expulsion from Spain.

We learned that the Mellah was once surrounded by high walls to separate the Jewish and Muslim populations. The management and laws governing the Mellah were independent of the Muslim quarters. Today, the Mellah stands as a testament to Chefchaouen's diverse past, a reminder of the different cultures that have shaped this unique city.
Next on our itinerary was a visit to the Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop. This place was a sensory overload in the best way possible. The shop was filled with a dazzling array of handcrafted copper items, from intricately designed lamps to exquisite decorative pieces. Each item reflected the rich heritage of the region, and it was fascinating to see the craftsmanship that went into every piece. Isabella, with her keen eye for detail, spent ages admiring the intricate patterns and shimmering light reflecting off the copper wares.

We chatted with the shopkeepers, who were eager to share stories about the history and techniques behind their crafts. It was more than just a shopping trip; it was an immersion into the local culture and traditions of Chefchaouen. We ended up purchasing a beautiful copper lamp, a memento that will forever remind us of our time in this magical city.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurant blue dream for dinner. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Moroccan dishes drew us in. We were not disappointed. I opted for the tagine, while Isabella chose the couscous. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and the friendly staff made us feel incredibly welcome. The restaurant even had live music, adding to the already vibrant atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the evening was the freshly baked bread served with our meal. It was warm, crusty, and utterly delicious. We also tried their signature tagine dishes for an authentic taste of Moroccan cuisine. The combination of great food and a warm, inviting ambiance made it a perfect end to our Sunday.
As we strolled back to Maison D'hôtes Afassi, we reflected on the day's adventures. Chefchaouen had once again captivated us with its charm and beauty. The blend of cultural experiences, culinary delights, and the simple joy of wandering through the blue streets made it a day to remember.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Bab el Mahrouk and Bouzafer Mosque. I’m particularly excited about visiting Bouzafer Mosque, as I've heard the views from there are simply breathtaking. Before that, we'll grab breakfast at Restaurant Hajji, and for lunch, we’re thinking of trying Galitos. In the evening, we’ll unwind at BILMOS, a local bar.
Tonight, however, I'm content to simply relax and savor the memories of another wonderful day in Chefchaouen. It’s moments like these that remind me why Isabella and I decided to embark on this journey in the first place. This trip has allowed us to reconnect with each other and with the world around us. As a Maple Syrup Coordinator from Edmonton, I never imagined I would find myself so enthralled by a blue city in Morocco, but here I am, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
It is worth noting that we did not pack an umbrella, and while the weather has been lovely, I am starting to think we may need to purchase one. Also, I could have sworn I packed an extra memory card for the camera, but it seems to be missing. I will need to remember to purchase one tomorrow, as I would hate to run out of space for all of these amazing photos!
Goodnight from Chefchaouen!
