A Saturday Stroll Through Chefchaouen's Soul
As our Moroccan adventure nears its end, Isabella and I decided to soak in the artistic and culinary delights of Chefchaouen. Today was all about wandering through hidden corners, appreciating local art, and savoring the flavors that make this blue city so unique. It’s amazing how each day here brings a new perspective and deeper appreciation for Moroccan culture.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Traditional kitchen. I've always found that starting the day with local cuisine sets the tone for exploration, and this morning was no exception. The fresh bread, olives, and mint tea fueled us for our artistic adventures ahead. Isabella, ever the early bird, was particularly excited to explore the local art scene.

Our first stop was Dar Antonio, a place that promised a glimpse into the soul of Chefchaouen through art. The walk there was a sensory experience in itself. The vibrant blue hues of the buildings seemed to shift with the changing sunlight, creating an ethereal atmosphere. The air was filled with the scent of spices and the sounds of local life, a symphony that I found incredibly grounding. Arriving at Dar Antonio, we were immediately struck by the building's architecture, a blend of traditional Moroccan design and artistic flair.

Inside, the art spoke volumes about the local culture and the artists' perspectives. Each piece told a story, reflecting the history, traditions, and dreams of the people of Chefchaouen. I found myself particularly drawn to a series of paintings depicting the Rif Mountains, their rugged beauty captured in vivid colors. Isabella, with her librarian's eye for detail, was fascinated by the intricate patterns and symbolism in the artwork. We spent a good hour there, lost in contemplation and conversation about the art and its significance.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on our itinerary was Dar Meziana, another gem tucked away in the maze-like streets of the medina. This place was a bit different from Dar Antonio, offering a more intimate and personal experience. It felt less like a gallery and more like stepping into someone’s home, albeit a home filled with beautiful art and artifacts. The owner, a warm and welcoming man, greeted us with a smile and shared stories about the art and his own life in Chefchaouen.

Dar Meziana was filled with an eclectic mix of art, from traditional crafts to contemporary paintings. I was particularly impressed by a collection of handmade carpets, each one a masterpiece of intricate design and craftsmanship. Isabella, always keen to learn new things, engaged the owner in a conversation about the techniques and symbolism used in the carpets. It was moments like these, connecting with locals and learning about their traditions, that made our trip so special.
For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Ali Baba, a local favorite known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with both locals and tourists eager to sample the flavors of Chefchaouen. We ordered a tagine and some couscous, two dishes that have become staples of our Moroccan culinary journey. The tagine was rich and flavorful, the meat tender and succulent, while the couscous was light and fluffy, a perfect complement to the tagine.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the medina, soaking in the sights and sounds of daily life. The narrow streets were filled with vendors selling everything from spices and textiles to handmade crafts and souvenirs. I couldn't resist buying a small leather bag, a memento of our time in Chefchaouen. Isabella, always on the lookout for unique finds, picked up a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl.
As the day began to wind down, we decided to stop by Assaada, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and stunning views of the city. We ordered some local beers and sat on the terrace, watching the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. Sipping my drink, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude for the experiences we were having.

For dinner, we opted for RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ, drawn by its reputation for authentic Andalusian cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and romantic ambiance. We started with some tapas, sampling a variety of local delicacies. For our main courses, Isabella ordered paella, while I opted for a seafood dish. The food was exquisite, a testament to the chef's skill and passion. The paella was rich and flavorful, the seafood fresh and perfectly cooked. We savored every bite, accompanied by a bottle of local wine.

As we walked back to Maison D'hôtes Afassi, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The air was cool and crisp, a welcome change from the heat of the day. We held hands, lost in our thoughts, grateful for the experiences we had shared. Chefchaouen had truly captured our hearts, its beauty and charm leaving an indelible mark on our souls.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Dar Echchaouen Maison d'hôtes & Riad and El Mellah. I'm particularly interested in exploring El Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, and learning about its history and culture. We’ll also grab breakfast at HERMANOS, lunch at مطعم داركم, and dinner at Restaurant blue dream. And, of course, we'll make sure to stop by the Chefchaouen copper and lamps shop to pick up some souvenirs.
As I sit here writing, reflecting on our day, I realize how much this trip has meant to me. It's not just about seeing new places, but about connecting with different cultures and experiencing life in a new way. Chefchaouen has taught me the importance of slowing down, appreciating the simple things, and embracing the beauty that surrounds us.
Tomorrow is our last full day in Chefchaouen, and I intend to make the most of it. There's still so much to see, so much to learn, and so many flavors to savor. I can't wait to share our final adventures with you all. Until then, good night from the Blue Pearl of Morocco.
