Nature and History Intertwined

Today was a beautiful blend of nature and history, a day where Isabella and I delved deeper into the heart of the Japanese Alps. Leaving the gassho-zukuri farmhouses behind for a day, we ventured into the surrounding areas to explore what else this region had to offer. It's amazing how much variety you can find in a relatively small area, from tranquil forests to meticulously preserved historical sites.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Zensuke. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Isabella chose a lighter, more Western-style meal. Fuelled for the day, we set out to explore the Nature Forest. The forest was a welcome escape from the more touristy areas of Shirakawa-go, offering a serene environment where we could reconnect with nature.

The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine and damp earth. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating dappled patterns on the forest floor. We spent a good few hours wandering along the trails, listening to the sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves. Isabella, ever the keen photographer, was in her element, capturing the beauty of the forest from every angle. I, on the other hand, simply enjoyed the peace and quiet, a rare commodity in our busy lives back in Edmonton. It was a refreshing change of pace, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me as we walked deeper into the woods. The summer greenery was a stark contrast to the snow-covered landscapes I've seen in pictures, making it a unique and beautiful experience. The forest felt ancient and wise, a sanctuary untouched by the modern world. Spending time in nature always reminds me of my childhood in Uruguay, where I spent countless hours exploring the countryside.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places.

After our refreshing forest walk, it was time for a taste of history. We headed to Takayama Jinya, a former government building that dates back to the Edo period. It’s the only one of its kind still standing in Japan, and it offered a fascinating glimpse into the country's past. We took a bus from Shirakawa-go to Takayama, a relatively short and scenic journey that allowed us to appreciate the surrounding landscapes.

The Takayama Jinya was an impressive structure, with its traditional architecture and well-preserved interiors. We spent a few hours exploring the various rooms, each filled with artifacts and exhibits that told the story of the building's role in governing the Hida Province. I was particularly intrigued by the law court and interrogation room, which gave me a sense of the strict justice system that was in place during the Edo period. Isabella was fascinated by the intricate details of the building's design, from the tatami mats to the calligraphy on the walls. We learned that the building had been in use for nearly 300 years, serving as a government office even after the Meiji Restoration. It was amazing to think about all the historical events that had unfolded within those walls.

By lunchtime, we were both feeling a bit peckish. We found a charming little soba shop called Tanaka-ya. I had heard great things about their noodles, and they did not disappoint. The soba was freshly made and served with a delicious dipping sauce. Isabella opted for a warm noodle soup, which she declared to be the perfect comfort food after a morning of exploring. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with a traditional Japanese atmosphere. It was the perfect place to refuel before continuing our adventures.

As the sun began to set, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Yamakoshi, a local bar known for its traditional ambiance. It was a small, intimate space with a friendly atmosphere. We chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the history and culture of the region. I tried some local sake, while Isabella opted for a Japanese beer. It was a great way to unwind after a long day of exploring. The bar was a welcome change from the touristy spots we had visited earlier in the day, offering a more authentic glimpse into the local way of life.

For dinner, we chose Hidaji, enticed by its reputation for serving authentic Hida beef. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a traditional Japanese interior. The Hida beef was absolutely delicious, tender and flavorful. It was a true culinary highlight of our trip so far. Isabella and I shared a few different dishes, savoring each bite and appreciating the skill and artistry that went into preparing the meal. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the natural and historical wonders of Takayama and Shirakawa-go.

As we headed back to our accommodation, I couldn't help but reflect on how much we had experienced in a single day. From the tranquility of the Nature Forest to the historical significance of Takayama Jinya, every moment had been filled with wonder and discovery. I was grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region with Isabella, sharing in the joy of experiencing new cultures and creating lasting memories.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Garyu Park and the Hida no Sato Open Air Museum. I’m particularly excited about the open-air museum, as it will give us an even deeper understanding of the traditional way of life in this region. Before that we'll make sure to start the day off with breakfast at Kita no Sho, and then lunch at Shiawaseya Kichibei. We'll round off our day with dinner at Nomura. Isabella is also keen on checking out Ichihi, a local shop, so we might make a stop there as well. Each day here seems to bring new adventures, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to immerse myself in different cultures and to learn about the world in a way that no book or documentary could ever teach me.

Even though I miss my maple syrup coordination job back in Edmonton, I know that this trip is exactly what Isabella and I needed. It's a chance to reconnect with each other and with ourselves, to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. And who knows, maybe I'll even find some inspiration for a new maple syrup flavor along the way!

The memories we're creating here in Shirakawa-go are priceless, and I can't wait to share more of our adventures with you all. Stay tuned for the next installment of our journey!
