Exploring Kochi's Natural Wonders
Today was all about diving deep into the heart of Kochi, both literally and figuratively. Lena and I set out to explore some of the natural wonders that this part of Shikoku Island is famous for, and let me tell you, it didn't disappoint. From breathtaking gorges to mysterious caves, and of course, some delicious food, it was a day packed with adventure.
We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Amekaze Shokudo. The restaurant offered a delightful view of the surrounding rice fields, which added to the serene atmosphere. I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Lena opted for a more Western-style toast and coffee. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle our first destination: Ōboke Gorge.
Discover the stunning vistas and thrilling adventures at Ōboke Gorge, Tokushima's hidden gem for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Ōboke Gorge: A River Runs Through It
The drive to Ōboke Gorge was an adventure in itself. The roads wound through lush green mountains, with glimpses of the Yoshino River appearing now and then. As we got closer, the gorge revealed itself in all its glory. The steep, rocky walls and the turquoise waters of the river created a stunning landscape.
We decided to take a sightseeing boat tour to get a closer look. Gliding through the gorge, the guide pointed out interesting rock formations, each resembling different animals. Lena, with her keen eye for detail as a graphic designer, was particularly fascinated by the natural artistry on display. I, on the other hand, was simply mesmerized by the sheer power of the river that had carved its way through the rocks over millennia.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
After the boat tour, we grabbed a quick lunch at Joyfull Kochi Otsu Shop , a family-friendly restaurant with a diverse and affordable menu.

It was a welcome break before our next adventure: Ryugado Museum and Cave.
Discover the rich cultural heritage of Kochi at the Ryugado Museum, where history comes alive through captivating exhibits and local artistry.
Ryugado Cave: Journey to the Center of the Earth (Almost!)
Ryugado Cave is one of the three most extensive limestone cave complexes in Japan. As we approached the entrance, the air turned cool and damp, a refreshing change from the warm spring day outside. The cave is thought to have been formed around 175 million years ago , and you can feel the weight of history as you step inside.
The standard tour took us through narrow tunnels and vast chambers, filled with stalactites and stalagmites of all shapes and sizes. Streams of clear water flowed through the cave, creating mini-waterfalls and reflecting the light in mesmerizing ways. In one section, we saw an earthenware vessel encased in stalactite, dating back to the prehistoric Yayoi Period. It was a tangible connection to the people who had sought shelter in this cave centuries ago.
We also visited the Ryugado Museum , which provided fascinating insights into the cave's history and formation. Lena was particularly interested in the artifacts discovered within the cave, which offered a glimpse into the lives of the people who lived here long ago. I found the explanations of the cave's geological formation captivating, a testament to the slow but relentless power of nature.
Dinner and Drinks in Kochi City
After a day of exploring, we drove back to Kochi City for a well-deserved dinner. We chose Munagin , a restaurant known for its *unagi* (eel) dishes.
Experience the authentic taste of Japan at Munagin - a premier destination for unagi lovers in Nankoku.
It was a real treat to savor the local flavors and reflect on the day's adventures. The savory aroma of grilled eel filled the air, making my stomach rumble in anticipation. Lena, always the adventurous eater, tried a variety of *unagi* preparations, while I stuck to my favorite classic grilled *unagi* over rice. Each bite was a burst of umami, a perfect way to end a day of exploration.
To cap off the evening, we decided to check out tone dining bar.
Discover the vibrant atmosphere and affordable drinks at Tone Dining Bar in Kochi, a perfect spot for unwinding and socializing with locals.
The bar had a cozy and stylish atmosphere , with a great selection of cocktails and a friendly vibe. We enjoyed a couple of drinks, chatting with the bartender and soaking in the local atmosphere. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring the natural wonders of Kochi.
As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Shikoku Island continues to surprise and delight us with its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. I'm also reminded that I forgot to pack an adapter for Japanese outlets! Lena was kind enough to share hers, but I'll definitely need to pick one up tomorrow.
Tomorrow, we're heading to Matsuyama, where we plan to visit Matsuyama Castle [ ] and Dogo Onsen Main Building [ ]. I'm particularly excited about experiencing one of Japan's oldest onsens, and Lena is looking forward to exploring the castle and learning more about its history. We might also check out Shikoku Shop 88 [ ] for some local souvenirs.
Until then, *Oyasumi nasai* (good night) from Shikoku!
I'm constantly reminded that the best travel experiences are the ones that immerse you in the local culture and natural beauty of a place. Today was a perfect example of that, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Join José and Lena as they explore the cultural and natural wonders of Japan's Shikoku Island, embracing adventure and spontaneity.
