Finding Peace and Treasures in Chefchaouen
Today was a day of contrasts, blending tranquil moments in nature with the vibrant energy of local markets. It’s amazing how a single day can hold so many different experiences, each leaving its own unique mark. I always appreciate these kinds of days during my travels, as they allow me to fully immerse myself in the local culture and find hidden gems that I wouldn't otherwise discover.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at MIDO'S. The owner was incredibly welcoming, happily veganizing anything possible on the menu. I opted for a delicious vegan burger, and it was the perfect start to fuel our explorations. Greta would have loved this place! It reminded me of our favorite little vegan spot back in Berlin.
With our bellies full, we decided to embrace the morning serenity at Park Sidi Abdelhamid. It was a short walk from our hotel, Casa Familia, and I was eager to escape the bustling medina for a bit. The park was indeed a hidden gem, a tranquil escape filled with lush landscapes and vibrant flora. The air was fresh, and the views of the blue-washed buildings against the backdrop of the Rif Mountains were simply breathtaking.
I found a quiet bench and spent some time simply soaking in the atmosphere. It was a welcome change of pace from the crowded streets of the medina. I couldn't help but think how much Greta would have enjoyed this peaceful oasis. She always appreciates a good park, and I know she would have loved the vibrant colors and serene environment.
Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from simply being present in a place, letting the atmosphere seep into your soul.
After our relaxing interlude in the park, it was time to dive back into the heart of Chefchaouen. We strolled towards Casa Familia, which wasn't too far from Park Sidi Abdelhamid. Nestled in a residential area, it offered a different perspective on the town. The walk was pleasant, giving us a chance to observe local life away from the tourist crowds. Casa Familia itself was charming, with its Moroccan style and a lovely view of the mountains. It’s managed with a personal touch, making our stay feel all the more welcoming.
Lunchtime found us at Restaurant Jbaria, a cozy spot known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. We secured a table on the terrace upstairs, relishing the peaceful atmosphere away from the tourist bustle. I decided to try their recommended bissara and lentils, and they were indeed delicious. The portions were generous, and the fresh, high-quality bread was a delightful bonus. The service was laid-back, which added to the charm of the place. It felt like dining in a traditional Moroccan home.
After lunch, we ventured into the shopping scene, making our way to Dar Moulay Idriss. This shop is known for its exquisite handwoven carpets, and I was eager to see the traditional Moroccan craftsmanship. The carpets were vibrant and beautiful, each telling a story through its intricate designs. I spent quite some time admiring the artistry and considering a purchase, but ultimately decided to hold off. Greta would have loved these carpets, though. She has such a keen eye for textiles and patterns. Maybe I’ll surprise her with one when I get back to Berlin.
As the afternoon waned, we made our way back towards Hotel Casa Miguel, our cozy home base for this Chefchaouen adventure. I took a moment to reflect on the day’s experiences. The blend of tranquility at Park Sidi Abdelhamid, the delicious traditional cuisine at Restaurant Jbaria, and the vibrant shopping at Dar Moulay Idriss had created a rich tapestry of memories.
I'm really enjoying traveling with my friends, it reminds me of my younger years back in Micoud. I must admit, I miss Greta, but I know she'd want me to enjoy this experience with my friends. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to visit Bab el Mahrouk and Ensemble d'artisanat complexe. I've heard great things about both places, and I'm excited to explore more of what Chefchaouen has to offer. We'll also be trying out Café Mundial for breakfast, Casa Arina for lunch, and Restaurant Bar Chaouen for dinner. It promises to be another day filled with new discoveries and unforgettable moments. I am especially excited to see Ensemble d'artisanat complexe, as I am keen to see local artists in action.
And as I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful country with my friends. Each day brings new adventures, new flavors, and new perspectives. It's moments like these that make travel so enriching and rewarding. I am also thinking about a potential visit to Moulay Idriss, the sacred town bathed in color and tradition. It would be a unique travel experience beyond Chefchaouen, something that I would love to explore.
Chefchaouen has a certain magic to it, a charm that seeps into your soul and leaves you wanting more. It’s a place where you can lose yourself in the beauty of the blue-washed streets, find peace in the tranquility of nature, and connect with the warmth of the local people. I am so glad I decided to come here, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I must remember to buy that power adapter that I forgot to pack! It would make life so much easier. Also, a light jacket would be great for the cooler evenings. Note to self!
I am also thinking about the Chefchaouen Festival of Popular Arts and the Festival of Sacred Music. It would be amazing to attend these festivals and experience the traditional music, dance, and performances. It would provide a unique insight into the town's rich cultural heritage. This is something I will definitely consider for my next visit.
I am also intrigued by the Kasbah Museum, which showcases the region's history, culture, and art. The exhibits cover a range of topics, from ancient Berber life to the town's colonial past, offering valuable insight into the local heritage. This is another place I would love to visit on my next trip to Chefchaouen.
Chefchaouen is indeed a place that offers something for every traveler. Whether you're exploring the narrow streets of the medina, hiking through the Rif Mountains, or simply relaxing by the waterfall, the town's distinctive charm and welcoming atmosphere make it an unforgettable destination. I am so grateful to be here, experiencing all that this magical place has to offer.
