Exploring the Blue Pearl of Morocco with Friends
Day 4: Summiting Jebel El-Kelaa: A Day of Heights and Blue Vistas
Conquering Jebel El-Kelaa, exploring Bab El Ain, and savoring Chefchaouen's flavors—an unforgettable day in Morocco's Blue Pearl.
Reaching New Heights in Chefchaouen
Today was all about embracing the heights, both literally and figuratively, in the mesmerizing Chefchaouen. From exploring ancient gates to conquering mountain summits, and indulging in the local cuisine, it was a day packed with unforgettable experiences. Join me as I recount my adventures in this blue-washed Moroccan gem.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Café Sindibad. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of traditional Moroccan bread filled the air as I met my friends. The café's location offered a stunning view of Chefchaouen waking up, the blue hues of the buildings slowly intensifying as the sun climbed higher. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of Moroccan pancakes with honey, a local favorite that never disappoints.

With our stomachs content and spirits high, we set off to explore Bab El Ain. This historic gateway, dating back to 1511, serves as one of the main entrances to the old medina. As we approached, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate architecture and the palpable sense of history. The vibrant atmosphere around the gate was infectious, with locals going about their daily routines and tourists snapping photos of the picturesque surroundings. We wandered through the narrow streets, soaking in the sights and sounds of the bustling market. The mix of colors, smells, and the calls of vendors created a sensory overload that was both exhilarating and captivating.

After exploring Bab El Ain, the main event of the day awaited: hiking to the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa. This mountain, standing tall above Chefchaouen, promised panoramic views of the town and the surrounding Rif Mountains. I had been looking forward to this hike since planning the trip, eager to challenge myself physically and be rewarded with breathtaking vistas. We made sure to pack plenty of water and some snacks, knowing that the ascent would be demanding.

The trail began with a gentle incline, gradually leading us away from the blue embrace of Chefchaouen and into the rugged terrain of the mountains. As we climbed higher, the views became increasingly spectacular, with the town shrinking below us and the vast expanse of the Rif Mountains stretching out in the distance. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the sound of our footsteps and the occasional chirping of birds.
The final ascent to the summit was challenging, with steeper paths and rocky terrain demanding our full attention. There were moments when I questioned my ability to reach the top, but the thought of the view that awaited me kept me going. Greta, my wife, would have loved this hike, she always says:
It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.
Finally, after several hours of hiking, we reached the summit. The feeling of accomplishment was overwhelming, but it was the view that truly took my breath away. From our vantage point, Chefchaouen looked like a miniature painting, its blue buildings contrasting sharply with the green hillsides. The Rif Mountains extended in every direction, their peaks shrouded in a soft haze. It was a sight that I will never forget. We spent some time at the summit, taking photos, catching our breath, and simply soaking in the beauty of our surroundings. The sense of peace and tranquility was profound, a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The descent was just as challenging as the ascent, but the stunning views made it all worthwhile. As we made our way back down, we encountered friendly locals who greeted us with warm smiles and offered words of encouragement. Their hospitality and kindness touched my heart, reminding me of the strong sense of community that exists in this part of the world.
Back in Chefchaouen, with tired legs and satisfied souls, we decided to treat ourselves to a well-deserved lunch at Le Coin. This charming restaurant, nestled in the heart of the medina, is known for its traditional Moroccan dishes and cozy atmosphere. We feasted on a delicious tagine, savoring the rich flavors and aromatic spices. The tagine, cooked to perfection, was a true culinary delight, a testament to the skill and passion of the local chefs.

Refueled and rejuvenated, we ventured into CHAOUEN GIFTS, a local shop, to find some souvenirs for our families back home. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted items, from colorful textiles to intricate ceramics. I picked up a few small gifts, each one a reminder of our incredible journey.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Restaurant Bar Chaouen for dinner. This lively establishment, with its inviting ambiance and extensive menu, seemed like the perfect place to end our day. We settled into a cozy corner and ordered a selection of Moroccan delicacies, including couscous, grilled meats, and fresh salads. The food was delicious, but it was the atmosphere that truly made the evening special. The restaurant was filled with locals and tourists, all enjoying the company of friends and the vibrant energy of Chefchaouen. Laughter and conversation filled the air, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared experience.

After dinner, we strolled through the town, taking in the sights and sounds of Chefchaouen at night. The blue buildings glowed softly under the moonlight, creating a magical and ethereal atmosphere. The streets were quieter now, but still filled with a sense of life and energy. We stopped at a local café for a cup of mint tea, savoring the sweet and refreshing beverage as we reflected on our day's adventures. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had today.
