Friday Adventures in Húsavík

Today was all about diving deeper into what makes Húsavík tick. From exploring its history to savoring local flavors, it was a day filled with discoveries and delightful moments. It's amazing how much a small town can offer, and I'm excited to share my experiences.

The day started with a hearty breakfast at Nesti. Knowing I had a full day ahead, I fueled up with some traditional Icelandic fare. Nesti is known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious food, and it certainly didn't disappoint. I opted for their famous fish and chips, which many locals recommend, and it was indeed the best I've had in Iceland. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the chips were perfectly crispy. It was the perfect way to kick off a day of exploration. It reminded me of the little cafes back in Micoud, Saint Lucia, where simple, honest food is always the star.

Stepping Back in Time at the Exploration Museum

Next on the agenda was the Exploration Museum. As someone fascinated by history and human endeavors, this museum was a must-visit. The museum is dedicated to the history of human exploration, showcasing everything from Viking voyages to space missions.

The main exhibition featured artifacts and photographs from the Apollo astronaut training that took place near Húsavík in the 1960s. It was fascinating to learn that NASA chose this area because of its resemblance to the lunar landscape. Seeing the equipment and hearing the stories of the astronauts who trained here gave me a new appreciation for the spirit of exploration. There were also exhibits on Viking exploration and expeditions to the polar regions. I was particularly drawn to the stories of Leif Erikson and the Viking voyages to North America. It's incredible to think about the courage and resilience of these early explorers.

Exploration is really the essence of the human spirit.

The museum also hosts the Leif Erikson Awards annually, celebrating achievements in exploration and the study of its history. It’s inspiring to see how Húsavík, a small town in Iceland, plays a role in honoring such significant global achievements. The visit left me pondering the parallels between the Vikings setting sail into the unknown and the astronauts venturing into space – both driven by an insatiable curiosity and a desire to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Scenic Views from Húsavík Viewpoint Parking

After immersing myself in history, I decided to take a drive to the Húsavík viewpoint parking. I needed some fresh air and a change of scenery. The drive itself was stunning, with snow-dusted landscapes and the shimmering Skjálfandi Bay stretching out before me. The viewpoint offers panoramic views of Húsavík and the surrounding area. It’s a popular spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts, and I can see why.

I spent some time simply taking in the view, breathing in the crisp Icelandic air. Even though it was December, the weather was surprisingly mild, and the sun peeked through the clouds, casting a golden light on the landscape. I could see the mountains in the distance, their peaks covered in snow, and the colorful houses of Húsavík nestled along the coastline. It was a perfect moment of peace and tranquility. I imagined Greta would have loved this view; she always appreciates a good panorama.

Lunch at Pizzakofinn

For lunch, I opted for a quick and casual meal at Pizzakofinn. This small pizza place is known for its delicious pizzas and friendly service. I ordered a seafood pizza, which came highly recommended, and it was fantastic. The seafood was fresh, and the crust was perfectly crispy. The owner, Jon, was incredibly welcoming and shared some interesting stories about the town.

While there isn't much seating space inside, there are benches outside where you can enjoy your meal with a view. I sat there, munching on my pizza and watching the locals go about their day. It was a simple but satisfying lunch, and it gave me a taste of the local culture. I even chatted with a couple of locals who were eager to share their favorite spots in Húsavík. They recommended I try the local beer at Húsavík Öl, which was definitely on my list.

An Evening at Húsavík Öl

Speaking of which, as evening approached, I made my way to Húsavík Öl, a local microbrewery. This place is a gem. Housed in an old milk factory, the brewery has a rustic and charming atmosphere. The brewers are passionate about their craft, and they use seasonal ingredients to create a variety of unique and flavorful beers.

I sampled a few different beers, including their raspberry sour and the prize-winning Tart Coulis, a blood orange sour ale with a hint of licorice. Each beer was distinct and delicious, and I appreciated the creativity and care that went into brewing them. The taproom was cozy and inviting, and I struck up conversations with some of the locals. They were friendly and welcoming, and they shared some interesting insights into Icelandic culture and traditions.

It was interesting to learn that Húsavík Öl is committed to using local and seasonal ingredients in their beers. This not only supports the local economy but also adds a unique flavor profile to their brews. I admire their dedication to sustainability and their passion for creating high-quality, locally sourced products.

Dinner at Lókal Bistro

For dinner, I decided to try Lókal Bistro, a restaurant that specializes in healthy alternatives to fast food. They focus on using local and fresh ingredients, which appealed to my desire for authentic culinary experiences. The bistro had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and attentive.

I ordered a hot wrap filled with locally sourced vegetables and grilled chicken. It was delicious and satisfying, and I appreciated the emphasis on fresh, healthy ingredients. The bistro also had a sunny terrace overlooking the harbor, which would be lovely in the warmer months.

As I enjoyed my meal, I reflected on the day's adventures. From exploring the history of human exploration at the Exploration Museum to savoring the local flavors at Nesti, Pizzakofinn, and Lókal Bistro, it was a day filled with discoveries and delightful moments. Húsavík has a unique charm and character, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience it firsthand.

Before heading back to Fosshotel Husavik, I took a final stroll along the harbor, enjoying the quiet solitude of the night. The stars were out, and the air was crisp and clean. I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude for the experiences I had today. It reminded me why I love to travel and explore new places. It's not just about seeing the sights; it's about connecting with the local culture, meeting new people, and creating lasting memories.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to go whale watching with Gentle Giants and visit the Húsavík Panoramic View. I've heard great things about the whale watching tours in Húsavík, and I'm excited to see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. I'm also looking forward to taking in the panoramic views from the viewpoint. It promises to be another exciting day in Húsavík, and I can't wait to share my experiences with you all.

I am also thinking of getting Greta a souvenir from Norðlenska, as I know she would appreciate a little something from Iceland. And perhaps I'll try to find a postcard to send to my students in Berlin, telling them about the wonders of Húsavík. It's always nice to share my travels with them and inspire them to explore the world as well.

Good night from Húsavík! It's time for a good night's sleep, so I'm ready for the next adventure. Perhaps I'll dream of whales and Vikings tonight!
