Day 3: Wandering Through Whispering Bamboo: A Day of Serenity in Arashiyama
Journey through Arashiyama's enchanting bamboo forest & vibrant shopping streets, savoring Kyoto's culinary delights. A serene escape!
A Breath of Fresh Air in Arashiyama
Today, Lena and I ventured into the serene district of Arashiyama, seeking respite from the bustling city center. We traded the urban landscape for the tranquil embrace of nature, and the day unfolded into a beautiful exploration of bamboo groves, local flavors, and vibrant shopping streets. It was a day of simple pleasures and quiet contemplation, a perfect interlude in our Kyoto adventure.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. As a vegan restaurant, it was a unique find in Kyoto, and I was eager to try their plant-based offerings. Lena, ever the adventurous foodie, was equally excited. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made us feel instantly at home. I opted for their famous vegan pancakes, while Lena chose the teriyaki soy-chicken. My pancakes were fluffy and delicious, a sweet start to the day. Lena thoroughly enjoyed her savory dish as well. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, making it a perfect spot to relax and fuel up for the day's adventures.

Leaving the restaurant, we headed towards Arashiyama. The train ride itself was a treat, offering glimpses of the Kyoto countryside. As we stepped off the train, the air was noticeably fresher, carrying a hint of earthy scent. The Hozu River greeted us with its calm waters, reflecting the clear winter sky. It was a refreshing change from the city, and I could feel my shoulders relax as we began our walk towards the famed Bamboo Grove.

In the heart of Arashiyama, nature whispers secrets to those who listen closely.
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove was everything I had imagined and more. Towering stalks of bamboo reached for the sky, creating a mesmerizing tunnel of green. The sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting dappled shadows on the path. Lena and I strolled hand-in-hand, marveling at the sheer height and density of the bamboo. The gentle rustling of the stalks in the breeze created a soothing symphony, a world away from the urban cacophony I am used to in Berlin. It was easy to get lost in the moment, surrounded by nature's grandeur. Despite it being February, the grove was vibrant and full of life. The winter chill added a crispness to the air, making the experience even more invigorating.
As we walked deeper into the grove, I couldn't help but reflect on the resilience of bamboo. Here I was, a Cameroonian software engineer living in Berlin, walking through a bamboo forest in Japan. I thought about the journey that brought me here. The grove seemed to echo my own life, reminding me of the strength and flexibility required to adapt to new environments and cultures. I took a deep breath, feeling grateful for the opportunities I've had and the experiences that have shaped me.
After our tranquil walk through the Bamboo Grove, we explored the wider Arashiyama area. We visited the serene Tenryu-ji Temple, admiring its Zen gardens and the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Although it was winter, the gardens retained a stark beauty, the snow accentuating the simplicity of the rock formations. Lena, with her architect's eye, appreciated the meticulous design and the harmony between nature and human intervention.
For lunch, we headed to Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store. I had read rave reviews about their tonkatsu, and I was eager to try this classic Japanese dish. We found the restaurant tucked away in a small alley, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its popularity. I ordered their signature tonkatsu, while Lena opted for the Kurobuta pork cutlet. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, a delightful combination of textures and flavors. Lena's Kurobuta pork was equally delicious, rich and succulent. We both agreed that it was one of the best tonkatsu we had ever tasted.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we made our way to the Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street. This vibrant pedestrian area was a stark contrast to the serenity of Arashiyama, a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells. Shops lined the street, selling everything from traditional crafts to trendy fashion. Lena, a self-confessed shopaholic, was in her element. We browsed through kimono shops, souvenir stores, and quirky boutiques, soaking in the lively atmosphere. I even managed to find a few unique souvenirs for my friends back in Berlin.

One shop that caught my eye was Bentendo, a store that has been around since the Meiji era. They offered Kyoto-themed souvenirs, many of which were designed and made by the shop itself. I picked up a beautiful gold folding fan for my mother, a small but elegant reminder of our trip to Kyoto. Lena, on the other hand, was fascinated by SOU SOU Hotei, a brand from Kyoto that blends traditional designs with modern aesthetics. She ended up buying a stylish scarf with a unique Japanese pattern.
As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to dinner at Gion Mikaku. This long-standing Wagyu specialty restaurant, located along the Shirakawa River, offered a luxurious dining experience. We chose the teppanyaki course, eager to witness the chef's culinary skills up close. The chef skillfully prepared the Wagyu beef on the hot plate, searing it to perfection. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in my mouth with each bite. Lena and I savored every moment, enjoying the exquisite food and the elegant ambiance. The view of the Shirakawa River added to the romantic atmosphere, making it a perfect ending to our day.

Reflecting on our day in Arashiyama, I am struck by the contrast between the tranquil beauty of nature and the vibrant energy of the city. We experienced both today, finding balance and harmony in the midst of our travels. It was a day of simple pleasures, shared moments, and quiet contemplation. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful part of Japan with my wife, Lena, and I look forward to discovering what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple and explore the charming streets of Sannenzaka. I'm particularly excited to see Kiyomizu-dera, with its iconic wooden stage and stunning views of Kyoto. We also plan to visit Kyoto Star Bar for drinks.
As we head back to our hotel, I can't help but feel a sense of peace and contentment. Arashiyama has a way of slowing down time, allowing you to appreciate the beauty of the present moment. It's a place where you can reconnect with nature, indulge in local flavors, and discover hidden gems. And as I drift off to sleep, I know that the memories of this day will stay with me long after we leave Kyoto.
