Adventures in Osaka: A Day at Universal Studios Japan

Today was a whirlwind of excitement, laughter, and a whole lot of walking! Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka was our main destination, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. It’s amazing how a day packed with fictional worlds can feel so incredibly real.

Our day began, not in Osaka, but with a hearty breakfast at Arancino Kyoto. The reviews I had read were spot on – it was a delightful start to the day. The restaurant had a charming atmosphere, and the kids were excited about the Italian dishes. Klara and I enjoyed the chance to savor some excellent coffee while Mateo devoured his pasta. It’s these little moments of normalcy that make our family trips so special, grounding us before we dive into the extraordinary.

After breakfast, we hopped on the train to Osaka. The journey was smooth and efficient, a testament to Japan's excellent public transportation. Mateo, as always, was fascinated by the scenery flashing past the window, pointing out every new building and sign. I love seeing the world through his eyes; it reminds me to appreciate the simple things.

Arriving at USJ was like stepping into another dimension. The energy was palpable, with music, vibrant colors, and the excited chatter of visitors from all over the world. Mateo’s eyes widened as he took in the sights – Minions, Spider-Man, and larger-than-life dinosaurs all vying for his attention. It was a bit overwhelming, but in the best possible way. I had read that in January, even though it's winter, the park can still get crowded, so we were prepared for long lines.

We made a beeline for Super Nintendo World, which, I must admit, was just as thrilling for Klara and me as it was for Mateo. The attention to detail was incredible, making us feel like we had truly stepped into a Mario game. Mateo was particularly taken with Mario Kart: Koopa's Challenge. The ride was interactive and immersive, and we all had a blast racing through the Mushroom Kingdom. We had to get timed entry tickets, which I recommend to anyone planning a visit. It helped manage the crowds and made the experience much more enjoyable. I was so glad I downloaded the app in advance; it made securing the tickets a breeze.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones that allow us to relive our childhood through the eyes of our children.

Next up was the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. As a big fan of the books and movies, I was eager to see Hogsmeade come to life. It did not disappoint. The snow-covered rooftops, the charming shops, and the Butterbeer – it was all magical. Mateo was fascinated by Hogwarts castle, and we took plenty of photos to capture the moment. We rode Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, which was a thrilling experience, though perhaps a bit intense for Mateo. He emerged a little pale but declared it “awesome” nonetheless. I made a mental note to perhaps stick to the less intense rides for the rest of the day.

For lunch, we decided to try Khaos Spice Diner back in Kyoto. After the madness of USJ, we were all craving something flavorful and comforting. The curry rice hit the spot. Klara opted for the chicken curry, while Mateo, surprisingly, enjoyed the pork keema. I appreciated the laid-back atmosphere of the diner; it was the perfect place to unwind and refuel.

After lunch, we took a leisurely stroll through the Teramachi shopping arcade, soaking in the local atmosphere. Klara found a charming little shop selling traditional crafts, and we picked up a few souvenirs. Mateo, of course, was more interested in the various food stalls, sampling everything from takoyaki to matcha ice cream. It’s these spontaneous moments that often become the most cherished memories of our travels.

As evening approached, we headed back to our hotel to freshen up before dinner. Tonight, we had reservations at Kinmata, a Kaiseki restaurant in Kyoto. I was excited to experience authentic Kyoto cuisine, and the reviews I had read promised a memorable dining experience. This was a treat for Klara and me, a chance to indulge in the culinary artistry that Japan is so famous for.

Kinmata was an experience. The restaurant was tucked away in Nishiki Market, a discreet location for such a highly-regarded establishment. We opted for the nine-course dinner, a seasonal menu showcasing the freshest ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a testament to the chef's skill and dedication.

The service was impeccable. Our kimono-clad waitress explained each dish with grace and precision, ensuring we understood the nuances of every flavor. The private room added to the intimate atmosphere, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the dining experience. Mateo was well-behaved, though I suspect some of the dishes were a bit too sophisticated for his palate. He did, however, enjoy the miso soup and the rice, declaring them “the best ever.”

After dinner, Klara and I decided to check out WORLD KYOTO. Mateo was fast asleep. It was a chance for us to let our hair down. The music was loud, the lights were flashing, and the energy was infectious. We danced and laughed, feeling carefree and alive. It was a far cry from our usual evenings in Potsdam, but it was a welcome change of pace. I even tried my hand at a few dance moves I hadn’t attempted since my university days. Klara, of course, was a natural, gliding across the dance floor with effortless grace.

As the night drew to a close, we made our way back to the hotel, our hearts full of joy and gratitude. Today had been a perfect blend of thrills, culinary delights, and shared moments. It was a reminder of why we love to travel, to explore, and to experience new things together as a family. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Higashiyama Jisho-ji and Maruyama Park, hopefully finding some tranquility amidst the bustling city. For breakfast we will try Ajikyu, a place Klara picked after reading some online reviews.

I am also grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you, my readers. Your comments and support inspire me to keep exploring and keep writing. Until tomorrow, auf wiedersehen!
