Timeless Views and Hidden Treasures in Fes

Today was a day of wandering, of letting Fes unfold its secrets at its own pace. It’s funny, even after several days here with my friends, the city continues to surprise me with its blend of history and everyday life. Sophie would have loved this day, she appreciates the blend of old and new that Fes offers. I made a mental note to bring her here someday.

Our morning started with a hearty breakfast at Chez Hakim. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the couscous au poulet was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I always appreciate a good, filling meal to start the day; it reminds me of the simple, hearty food my mother used to make back in Huancavelica. After breakfast, we set off to find the Viewpoint Medina.

Reaching the Viewpoint Medina was a bit of a climb, but so worth it. From up there, the sprawling cityscape was laid out before us, a tapestry of ancient buildings and modern satellite dishes. It struck me how Fes manages to hold onto its history while still stepping into the future. I could see the Hotel Les Merinides behind us and the main throughway, which made it more accessible than the Marinid Tombs. We even saw a vendor selling tea for 10 dirhams. I was cautious because I read some reviews that warned about wild dogs, but thankfully we didn't encounter any.

Sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones where you simply allow yourself to get lost and discover the unexpected.

Next on our list was the Dar al-Magana, the famed Water Clock. Finding it was an adventure in itself, navigating the labyrinthine streets of the medina. When we finally arrived, I was immediately struck by the clock's historical presence. I learned that it was built in the 14th century by Sultan Abu Inan Faris and was part of the Bou Inania Madrasa complex. It was designed by a muwaqqit named Abu al-Hassan ibn Ali Ahmed el-Tlemsani. Although the clock hasn't been functional for generations, its intricate facade and the story of its ingenious mechanism were captivating. I imagined Sophie marveling at the tile work and the sheer ingenuity of the clock’s design. It’s a shame that it’s been defunct for so long, but I appreciate that there are foundations in Fes that are aiming to restore the clock.

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Tresor Fes. It was conveniently located after visiting the Glaoui Palace, and the Moroccan cuisine was authentic and delicious. I had the olive soup and almond cookies, accompanied by Moroccan tea. The staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was beautiful, with a modern decor. From the restaurant, we had a great view of the Glaoui Palace.

After lunch, we visited the El Glaoui Palace. This place is a hidden gem ! It felt like stepping back in time. I learned that it once belonged to the Glaoui family, who were key figures in Moroccan history. The palace had intricate stucco work and carved cedarwood doors. It was built by the finance minister of the time and given to Madani after he supported the winning side in the Hafidiya civil war. The Glaoui family lived in luxury and even had electricity and Morocco’s first modern bathroom. Unfortunately, after Morocco gained independence, the family lost their power, and the palace fell into disrepair. I read some reviews that mentioned a German Shepherd in poor condition, and it was disheartening to see. Despite its state, the palace offered a glimpse into noble family life and historical opulence.

Our last stop before dinner was Fes Antiques. I was hoping to find a unique piece to bring back home, maybe something that reminded me of my grandfather's carpentry. The shop itself was full of interesting items, but I found the prices to be quite high. I remembered reading a review that warned about a pushy shopkeeper, so I was cautious. I told the shopkeeper that I was visiting from Chicago and just looking, and he used a ploy, telling me that he was Jewish and would offer me a fair price. He also said that because we were his first customers, we were obligated to buy something. It was an interesting experience, but I decided to move on without making a purchase.

For dinner, we decided to try La Truffe. The varied menu based on Mediterranean cuisine was appealing. I enjoyed the pizza and mille-feuille. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the decor was homey. I read some reviews that mentioned the beautiful view and outdoor seating, but unfortunately, it was dark when we arrived, so we couldn't fully appreciate it.

To end the day, we headed to La Medaille for a nightcap. The bar had a casual and cozy atmosphere. I ordered a beer and enjoyed the live music. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. It reminded me of some of the pubs back in Montreal, where Sophie and I would often go to relax after a long day. Some reviews mention that the staff attentiveness may vary, but we found the service to be friendly.

As I sit here writing this, I’m already looking forward to tomorrow. We plan to explore Talaa Kebira, Palais Mnebhi, and possibly take a day tour. I’m also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Palais du Tresor and enjoy a relaxing drink at Progrès. Fes continues to captivate me, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Tomorrow is our last full day in Fes, and I want to make the most of it. I am considering getting a gift for Sophie and Mateo, maybe some zellij tiles. Perhaps I will find something at the Palais du Tresor. I want to bring a piece of Fes back home to Montreal.
