Exploring the Cultural Richness of Fes with Friends
Day 6: A Day of Discovery in the Heart of Fes: Medersas, Markets, and Melodies
Immerse yourself in Fes's rich history and vibrant culture as you explore ancient schools, bustling markets, and captivating nightlife.
Whispers of History and Echoes of Today
Today in Fes was a deep dive into the city's soul, a journey through time and tradition that left me with a profound sense of wonder. From the hushed halls of ancient schools to the vibrant chaos of the markets and the rhythmic pulse of its nightlife, Fes revealed itself in layers, each more captivating than the last. It was a day of contrasts, where the echoes of the past harmonized with the rhythms of the present.
Our day began, as many do here, with a hearty breakfast. Nagham Cafe was the perfect spot. Finding it was a mini-adventure in itself, tucked away in a side alley near the Blue Gate. The friendly staff, fluent in English, welcomed us warmly. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, savoring the flavors while enjoying a delightful view of the bustling Bab Boujloud gate from the air-conditioned terrace. It’s amazing how a simple meal can set the tone for an entire day. I remember similar breakfasts back in Huancavelica, Peru, where the food was always a prelude to a day filled with exploration and discovery. Aisha, one of our friends, enjoyed a mint lemonade, which she said was the perfect balance of sweet and refreshing. It reminded me of the 'limonada' my Sophie makes back in Montreal, especially during the warmer months.

Fueled up, we set out to explore the Cherratine Medersa. This 14th-century Islamic school is a hidden gem, less known than its counterparts but brimming with its own unique charm. As a restoration technician, I was immediately drawn to the intricate zellige tilework, the delicate stucco carvings, and the cedar wood ceilings. The craftsmanship was simply astounding, a testament to the skill and artistry of artisans from centuries past. It reminded me of some of the restoration work I've done in Montreal, preserving the city's architectural heritage. Seeing these ancient techniques still so vividly present was truly inspiring.

To wander through the Cherratine Medersa is to step back in time, to feel the weight of history and the enduring power of human artistry.
The central courtyard, with its trickling fountain, offered a serene space for contemplation. I sat there for a while, imagining the countless students who had walked these halls, seeking knowledge and enlightenment. There was a sense of peace that enveloped the space, a feeling of connection to something larger than myself. Although the medersa isn't as well-preserved as some other sites, I found that it added to its character, making it feel more authentic. It was like stumbling upon a secret, a place where the past still whispers its stories.
Next on our itinerary was Place Rcif, a large public square in the heart of the medina. This bustling square is a meeting point for locals and visitors alike, a place where life unfolds in all its vibrant chaos. As we approached, the sounds of the city grew louder – the calls of vendors, the laughter of children, the murmur of conversations. The square was alive with activity, a sensory feast that was both exhilarating and overwhelming. I noticed the R'cif Mosque, also known as the "Mosque of the Paved Road", which overlooks the square with its towering minaret. The mosque was built in the 18th century.

It was fascinating to observe the dynamics of this space, to see how it functioned as a hub for commerce, social interaction, and cultural exchange. Place Rcif has undergone many changes throughout history. It serves as a reminder of the city's rich and complex past. I couldn't help but think of the plazas in Huancavelica, which also serve as central gathering places for the community. Though smaller in scale, they share that same sense of energy and connection.
For lunch, we ventured to Restaurant Darna Fes, drawn in by promises of traditional Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with carved pillars and colorful mosaics that created a warm and inviting atmosphere. We sat on the terrace, which offered panoramic views of the ancient city. I ordered a tagine, savoring the rich flavors and fragrant spices that are so characteristic of Moroccan cooking. The food was delicious, and the company was even better. We shared stories and laughter, bonding over our shared experiences in this magical city.

In the afternoon, we visited the Mosque and University Kairaouine. Founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, it is considered the oldest university in the world. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mosque, we were able to appreciate its grandeur from the outside. The sheer scale of the complex was impressive, a testament to its historical significance as a center of learning and spirituality. The University of al-Qarawiyyin has played a pivotal role in shaping Islamic scholarship over the centuries.

It was inspiring to learn about Fatima al-Fihri, a woman who dedicated her life and wealth to the pursuit of knowledge. Her legacy lives on in this magnificent institution, which continues to attract students and scholars from around the world. The university's library holds a vast collection of manuscripts. As someone who values education and cultural preservation, I was deeply moved by the story of this place.
Before dinner, we strolled through Medin Art, a shop recommended by our friend Hamid. It was a treasure trove of Moroccan handicrafts, from intricately woven carpets to hand-painted ceramics and ornate metalwork. I was particularly drawn to the Berber carpets, with their bold colors and geometric designs. They reminded me of the textiles from my homeland, Peru, which also carry deep cultural significance. I ended up purchasing a small vase, a memento of our time in Fes. Sophie will love it; it will look great in our living room next to the Peruvian textiles I brought back from my last trip.

For dinner, we chose Zagora, a restaurant known for its live music and Moroccan cuisine. The atmosphere was lively and festive, with a band playing traditional Moroccan tunes. We dined on a selection of local specialties, savoring the flavors of the region while enjoying the music. The combination of food, music, and company created a truly unforgettable experience. It was a perfect way to celebrate our day of discovery in Fes.

As the evening drew to a close, we decided to experience Fes's nightlife at Felix Club Fes. It was a change of pace from the traditional experiences of the day, but it offered a glimpse into the modern side of the city. The club was vibrant and energetic, with a mix of locals and tourists dancing to a blend of local and international music. It wasn't really my scene, but it was great to see everyone having a good time. Aisha and David were particularly enthusiastic, showing off their dance moves on the floor. I enjoyed watching them, sipping on a mint tea and soaking in the atmosphere. The club has a modern design and a state-of-the-art sound system.
