Today marked the beginning of our Moroccan adventure, and what better place to start than in the heart of Fes El Bali? The sights, sounds, and smells were an assault on the senses in the best possible way. I had an amazing day with my friends, and I can't wait to share all the details.

Our plane touched down in Fes this morning, and after a warm welcome from the friends we're staying with, we dove headfirst into the medina. Fes is a city that has always captivated my imagination, and I am excited to discover its secrets, one winding alley at a time.

Our exploration began in the sprawling maze that is Fes El Bali, the oldest part of Fez. Founded in the 9th century, it's a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels like stepping back in time. The narrow, winding streets are packed with shops, workshops, mosques and madrasas. Cars are virtually non-existent here, so it’s a pedestrian's paradise – or a potential navigational nightmare! Thankfully, I had my friends to keep me from getting completely lost. I even managed to practice my Arabic with a few local vendors, a skill I've been honing back in Montreal.

Our first stop was the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts & Crafts, housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century fondouk. As a restoration technician, I was particularly excited about this one. The building itself is a masterpiece, with intricate carvings and a tranquil courtyard. Inside, we found a stunning collection of wooden artifacts, from ancient tools to elaborate furniture. As someone who appreciates craftsmanship, I was in awe of the skill and artistry on display. I was particularly drawn to the old cedar tree stumps and the doors of Bou Inania Madrasa. Each piece told a story of Morocco's rich woodworking heritage, reminding me of the dedication and precision required in my own work restoring historical buildings in Montreal.

After immersing ourselves in the world of woodworking, we made our way to the Bou Inania Madrasa, a 14th-century theological college. The madrasa is one of the few religious buildings in Morocco open to non-Muslims, offering a unique glimpse into Islamic art and architecture. The intricate tilework, carved stucco, and cedarwood details were breathtaking. I was particularly impressed by the minaret, which stands out with its green tiles. As we wandered through the courtyard, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and reverence. It was easy to imagine students from centuries past studying here, surrounded by such beauty and tranquility.

By this point, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we headed to Cafe Clock for breakfast. This quirky cafe is known for its modern Moroccan cuisine and its commitment to cultural exchange. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with a mix of tourists and locals. I opted for the traditional Moroccan breakfast, which included msemen (savory pancakes), fresh fruit, and mint tea. My friend, always the adventurous one, tried the camel burger – apparently, it's a local specialty ! While we ate, we enjoyed the sounds of Gnawa music, a traditional Moroccan genre with roots in sub-Saharan Africa.

For lunch, we ventured to The Ruined Garden, a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of the medina. This unique restaurant is set in a former merchant's house, with a lush garden providing a tranquil escape from the bustling streets. The menu features modern Moroccan cuisine, with an emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. I ordered the kefta tagine, a flavorful dish of meatballs cooked in a rich tomato sauce. The combination of spices and herbs was simply divine. We finished our meal with a refreshing glass of mint lemonade, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of the garden.

In the afternoon, we explored the Cooperative Artisanal de Fes, a government-run shop showcasing the work of local artisans. Here, we found a wide array of traditional Moroccan crafts, from carpets and ceramics to leather goods and metalwork. I was particularly interested in the ceramics, with their intricate geometric patterns and vibrant colors. I ended up buying a beautiful tagine pot to take home as a souvenir, hoping to recreate some of the delicious dishes we've been enjoying here in Fes. I also picked up a few small gifts for Sophie and Mateo, knowing they would appreciate the intricate craftsmanship.

Before dinner, we stopped at Mezzanine, a trendy bar in the Ville Nouvelle. After a long day of exploring the medina, it was the perfect place to relax and unwind. I enjoyed a refreshing Moroccan beer while chatting with my friends and reflecting on the day's adventures. The atmosphere was lively and cosmopolitan, with a mix of locals and tourists. It was a nice contrast to the traditional atmosphere of the medina, offering a glimpse into modern Moroccan life.

For our first dinner in Fes, we chose Les Jardins de Sheherazade, a restaurant known for its refined Moroccan cuisine and its stunning setting in a historic palace. The restaurant is located in the Palais Sheherazade, a 19th-century palace with a lush garden and intricate Moorish architecture. We dined in the courtyard, surrounded by jasmine flowers, orange trees, and century-old palms. The ambiance was magical, transporting us back to the era of One Thousand and One Nights. I ordered the couscous with seven fruits, a Fassi specialty that was both sweet and savory. Each bite was an explosion of flavor, showcasing the richness and complexity of Moroccan cuisine.

As the sun set over Fes, we made our way back to our friends' home, exhausted but exhilarated. Today was just a taste of what Fes has to offer, and I can't wait to explore more of this fascinating city. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Chouara Tannery, Al Attarine Madrasa, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II. I'm particularly interested in seeing the tanneries, as I've heard they are a unique and unforgettable sight. I'm also looking forward to exploring more of the local shops and perhaps trying my hand at bargaining for some souvenirs. Fes is a city that truly captivates the senses, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings.

Before I turn in for the night, I'm making a list of essentials I forgot to pack: a universal adapter and extra camera batteries. Rookie mistake! Time to rest up for another day of adventure in this enchanting city. What a start to our trip!
