Fez-cinating Finds in Fes El Bali
Today was a sensory explosion, a deep dive into the heart of Fes el Bali, the old city of Fes. The sights, sounds, and smells were unlike anything I've ever experienced, even compared to my travels through South America. It was a day of ancient crafts, stunning architecture, and delicious food, shared with good friends. I couldn't wait to share it all with you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nagham Cafe. The cafe was easy to find just outside the Blue Gate, and offered a great view overlooking the old city of Fes. Fuelled by traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee, we ventured into the maze-like streets of the Medina. It's easy to get lost in there, but that's part of the fun. I even managed to practice my limited Arabic with some of the locals.

Our first stop was the infamous Chouara Tannery. The smell hit us before we even saw it – a potent mix of, well, let’s just say it's an experience! But, as Sophie always says, you have to embrace the full sensory experience of a place, good and bad. We were given sprigs of mint to help with the aroma, which was a thoughtful touch. The sight of the tanneries is incredible: men working knee-deep in vats of vibrant dyes, using techniques that haven't changed for centuries. The colors were stunning – ochre, crimson, indigo – a visual feast despite the pungent air. It was fascinating to see the whole process, from the initial curing of the hides to the final dyeing. I couldn't help but think of my grandfather, who worked with leather in Huancavelica. He would have been amazed by this place.

After the tannery, we needed a bit of a breather, so we headed to Al Attarine Madrasa. What a contrast! From the intense activity of the tannery to the serene beauty of this 14th-century Islamic school. The intricate tilework, the delicate carvings in cedarwood, and the peaceful courtyard were breathtaking. It felt like stepping back in time. I found myself imagining the students who once lived and studied here, poring over ancient texts. It’s a place that truly inspires contemplation. The Madrasa was built by the Marinid sultan Uthman II Abu Said in 1323-5 and is considered one of the highest achievements of Marinid architecture. The name “Al-Attarine” comes from the nearby spice market, which was once a bustling hub for perfume and incense traders.

Next on our list was the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II. It's a sacred place, and only Muslims can enter the main tomb chamber. However, even as non-Muslims, we were allowed to visit the outer courtyard and admire the architecture. The green-tiled roof and white walls were striking, and the atmosphere was heavy with reverence. Moulay Idriss II is considered the founder of Fes, and his mausoleum is a major pilgrimage site. The area around the mausoleum is filled with workshops, and I picked up a few copperware souvenirs.

By this point, we were all starving, so we made our way to Restaurant Dar Hatim for lunch. This family-run restaurant is a true gem. The food was incredible – authentic Moroccan dishes made with love. We had the lamb tagine, which was fall-off-the-bone tender, and the chicken pastilla, a sweet and savory pie that was a revelation. The owners, Karima and Fouad, were so welcoming, it felt like we were dining in their home. Sophie, who is vegetarian, was delighted that they adapted dishes to suit her. The restaurant itself is in a traditional house, with ornate cedar roofs and light fittings.

After lunch, we did a little shopping at Art Fez. I was looking for a unique pair of shoes, and this small shop stood out from the others. They sell handmade shoes made from cactus fiber and camel hair. I found a pair of sandals that are not only beautiful but also have a great story behind them, crafted by a local artist.

As the sun began to set, we headed to Rooftop Nour Plazza for a drink. The panoramic views of the city were stunning. Sipping mint tea as the call to prayer echoed from the mosques below was a magical moment. It was a perfect way to reflect on the day's adventures. Residents can enjoy a swimming pool, a fitness room and a spa with a hammam.

For dinner, we decided to try Restaurant MB. Located in the Ville Nouvelle, it was a taxi ride away from our accommodation, but it was well worth it. The restaurant is modern and trendy, with a fun atmosphere. The menu is a mix of French and Moroccan cuisine. I had the traditional pastilla aux pigeons, while my friends tried the Saint-Pierre sauvage rôti. The food was exceptional, and the service was excellent. It was a great way to end a busy day.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Jnan Sbil gardens, the Dar Batha Museum, and explore the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. I’m particularly interested in visiting Coin Berbere Carpets & Antiques; Sophie is on the lookout for a rug for our living room in Montreal. And perhaps we'll find time to relax at the Zen garden bar in the evening. Fes continues to surprise and delight at every turn. I feel so grateful to be sharing this experience with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
For those planning to visit Fes, keep in mind that September offers mild temperatures, perfect for exploring the city's attractions. While there aren't any specific major events listed for September 6, 2025, Fes is always bustling with cultural activities and local celebrations. Be sure to check local listings for any smaller festivals or events happening during your visit.
Until tomorrow,
Juan
