A Day Amidst Ancient Echoes
Today was a day of delving deep into Ladakh's spiritual heart, a journey that resonated with my soul and connected me to the rich tapestry of Buddhist history and art. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo adventure, seeking solace and understanding in the serene landscapes of Leh. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you all.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Madras - Cafe & Restaurant. I was eager to try their South Indian cuisine, a comforting reminder of home, even in these remote mountains. I ordered a masala dosa and a strong filter coffee, a combination that always reminds me of Sophie. The reviews were mixed, but I found the dosa to be quite satisfying, and the coffee was the perfect jolt to start my day.

Fueled and ready, I set out to explore the Alchi Monastery - Choskhor, also known as Alchi Choskhor. Located about 70 kilometers west of Leh, the journey itself was breathtaking, with the stark, snow-capped mountains providing a stunning backdrop. The monastery is nestled in the Alchi village, and unlike other monasteries perched on hilltops, Alchi sits serenely on the plains.

Alchi Monastery dates back to the 11th century, founded by the renowned Tibetan scholar and translator, Rinchen Zangpo. Some historical scriptures also mention Kal-dan Shes-rab, a Tibetan noble, as playing a role in its creation. This monastic complex is unique, comprising four separate settlements spread across Alchi village and the Sham Valley region. It's part of a trio of villages, including Mangyu and Sumda Chun Monastery, known as the 'Alchi group of monuments,' each boasting unique craftsmanship.

The monastery complex consists of three main shrines: the Dukhang (Assembly Hall), the Sumtsek, and the Manjushri Temple. The Dukhang is the oldest and largest section, adorned with paintings of Buddha and various goddesses. The Sumtsek is a three-story temple famous for its four-armed Bodhisattva statue. The Manjushri Temple, dating back to the 13th century, features older, somewhat unrefined paintings.
What struck me most were the wall paintings, a fusion of Kashmiri and Buddhist styles, showcasing the cultural exchange between India, Tibet, and Central Asia during the medieval period. The intricate details and vibrant colors, despite their age, were mesmerizing. I spent hours wandering through the complex, absorbing the artistry and history etched into every wall and sculpture. I made sure to take my time, knowing that Mateo would love to see the photos I take and hear the stories I have to tell. This is the kind of place that makes you feel connected to something bigger than yourself.
Next on the itinerary was the Sumda Chun Monastery, another gem from the same era. Located about 65 kilometers southwest of Leh, the journey to Sumda Chun was an adventure in itself. The monastery dates back to the 11th or 12th century, making it one of the oldest and most significant in Ladakh. Legend has it that Lotsawa Rinchen Zangpo founded it, along with the temples at Alchi and Mangyu, all in a single night.

Sumda Chun Monastery stands as a testament to Ladakh's rich Buddhist history, offering a peaceful retreat amidst the stunning Himalayan landscapes. The architecture is unique, featuring beautiful wooden carvings and ancient murals, some over 900 years old. The monastery once covered the entire hill, but today, only the assembly hall, main shrine, two Bodhisattva chapels, a prayer wall, and a few stupas remain.
The remoteness of Sumda Chun adds to its mystique and charm. As I walked through the monastery, I felt a deep sense of tranquility, surrounded by the ancient art and the quiet whispers of history. The main hall houses the image of the four-headed Vairocana, intricately ornamented, a sight to behold. It is believed that the complex was built for a parched climate, but the unexpected rainfall over the years has caused severe damage to the structures and art forms.
Leaving Sumda Chun, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness these ancient treasures. The experience was a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and the enduring power of faith and art. I was glad I had remembered to bring my notebook, as I jotted down many details about the day.
For dinner, I decided to try Bon Appetit in Leh. After a day of exploring ancient monasteries, I was ready for a comforting meal. Bon Appetit is known for its charming ambiance and diverse menu, offering everything from local Ladakhi dishes to international cuisine. I opted for a hearty Thukpa, a traditional Tibetan noodle soup, which was the perfect way to warm up after a chilly day. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the food was delicious. It was a great way to end a day of exploration and reflection. I made sure to note in my journal that I should try the tandoori chicken next time, as I had read it was cooked to perfection.

Before calling it a night, I decided to check out Jah roots bar for a bit. It had been a long day, and I thought a drink would be a nice way to unwind. Jah roots bar is known for its lively atmosphere and diverse selection of drinks. I ordered a local beer and enjoyed the music and the company of fellow travelers. It was a fun and relaxing way to end the day. I made a mental note to tell Mateo about the bar, as I know he would love the atmosphere.

As I reflect on today's journey, I'm filled with a sense of awe and gratitude. The monasteries of Alchi and Sumda Chun are not just historical sites; they are living embodiments of faith, art, and culture. They offer a glimpse into a world that is both ancient and timeless, a world that continues to inspire and uplift. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Khardung La and perhaps do some trekking in Ladakh [Khardung, Trekking in Ladakh]. I'm excited to see what new adventures await.
I am looking forward to sharing more of my journey with you all. Until then, may your own travels be filled with discovery and wonder.
