Enchantment in Kanazawa: A Journey Through Time

My first day in Kanazawa was nothing short of magical, a deep dive into Japan's rich history and culture. From meticulously designed gardens to the whispers of geishas in preserved teahouses, every moment felt like stepping back in time. I'm excited to share my experiences as I wandered through this captivating city, soaking in its beauty and charm.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Café. It’s a charming spot, reminiscent of a Seattle coffee shop, a little piece of home away from home. The owner, I learned, is actually from Seattle. I ordered a strong coffee and a breakfast sandwich, fueling up for a day of exploration. It reminded me of Sophie's favorite café back in Montreal, a comforting start to my Kanazawa adventure. I made a mental note to tell her about it; she would love the atmosphere here.

With a spring in my step, I headed to Kenroku-en, a garden renowned as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan. The moment I entered, I was enveloped in a serene atmosphere. The meticulous landscaping, the carefully placed stones, and the ancient trees whispered stories of generations past. I wandered along the winding paths, each turn revealing a new vista of breathtaking beauty. The Kasumigaike Pond mirrored the sky, creating an illusion of infinite space. I paused at the Yugao-tei, the oldest teahouse in the garden, imagining the feudal lords who once strolled these grounds. I could almost picture Mateo running around, discovering hidden paths and marveling at the koi in the ponds. It made me miss my family, but I knew this solo journey was essential for me to reconnect with my passions. It's interesting to note that Kenrokuen means “Garden of the Six Sublimities”, referring to spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, abundant water and broad views, which according to Chinese landscape theory are the six essential attributes that make up a perfect garden.

In the heart of Kanazawa, time seems to slow, allowing you to savor the beauty of the past and appreciate the artistry of the present.

Leaving the tranquil embrace of Kenroku-en, I made my way to Kanazawa Castle Park, which sits directly across from the garden. The castle, or rather what remains of it, is a testament to the resilience of history. Fires and wars have taken their toll, but the reconstructed buildings offer a glimpse into the grandeur of the Maeda clan, who ruled this region for centuries. I explored the Hishi Yagura Turret and the Gojukken Nagaya Warehouse, marveling at the intricate details of the architecture. The stone walls, constructed using various techniques, were like a museum in themselves, showcasing the evolution of castle building over time. As I walked through the park, I thought about the countless samurai who once roamed these grounds, their armor glinting in the sun. It was humbling to stand in a place where so much history had unfolded.

For lunch, I ventured to Plat Home - Kanazawa Kitchen, a cozy bistro known for its innovative approach to Japanese cuisine. The restaurant prides itself on using locally grown, fresh ingredients, and the menu changes seasonally to highlight regional delicacies. I opted for a set lunch, which included a selection of small dishes, each a work of art in itself. The flavors were exquisite, a harmonious blend of traditional and modern techniques. The staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel welcome and at ease. It was the perfect place to recharge before continuing my exploration.

In the afternoon, I immersed myself in the enchanting atmosphere of the Higashi Chaya District. This well-preserved geisha district transported me back to the Edo period, with its wooden lattice buildings and narrow, winding streets. I visited the Shima Teahouse, now a museum, and learned about the life of a geisha, their training, and their role in society. I imagined the sounds of music and laughter that once filled these rooms, the clinking of sake cups, and the elegant dances performed for wealthy patrons. I also peeked into Kaikaro Teahouse, which still operates today, offering a glimpse into the exclusive world of geisha entertainment. It is the biggest Chaya building in the Higashi Chaya District and designated as Kanazawa City Preservation Architecture. While still maintaining the traditional atmosphere from its 200-year history, the Higashi Chaya Tea District today is home to many cafes, restaurants, craft shops, and more. The area is also known for shops selling gold leaf products, a specialty of Kanazawa. I couldn't resist buying a small gold leaf trinket as a souvenir for Sophie.

Before dinner, I decided to do some shopping at Kanazawa Hyakubangai, located within Kanazawa Station. It’s divided into three areas: “Anto,” a souvenir and eating area; “Rinto,” a fashion area; and “Anto Nishi,” which has a fresh food supermarket. It was the perfect place to pick up some local sweets and crafts to bring back to Mateo. It’s conveniently located, and I was able to find some unique gifts that I know my family will appreciate.

For my first dinner in Kanazawa, I chose Sushi Ippei, a small, family-run restaurant known for its fresh, high-quality sushi. The owners, a lovely older couple, welcomed me with warm smiles and impeccable service. I ordered the chef's recommended set, and each piece of sushi was a revelation. The fish was incredibly fresh, melting in my mouth with every bite. The rice was perfectly seasoned, and the wasabi added just the right amount of kick. It was a truly authentic and unforgettable sushi experience.

As the day drew to a close, I strolled back to my hotel, my heart full of the beauty and history I had encountered. Tmark City Hotel Kanazawa had cast its spell on me, and I knew this was just the beginning of an incredible journey. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, the Nagamachi District, and the Nomura-ke Samurai Heritage Residence. I'm particularly excited about exploring the Nagamachi District, with its preserved samurai houses and peaceful atmosphere. It feels like I am going to walk into a movie set. I am also planning to check out the Kohaku Bar, for a nightcap.
