A Day of Reflection and Rejuvenation

Leaving the familiar streets of Kanazawa behind, I embarked on a day trip that promised both spiritual enrichment and a taste of local flavors. It was a journey that took me through serene landscapes, ancient temples, and charming onsen towns, offering a refreshing contrast to the urban energy of the city. Today was a day to cleanse the mind and indulge in the simple pleasures of life.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Bird Yakitori [i]. While yakitori might be more commonly associated with dinner, I was intrigued by the idea of starting my day with it. The restaurant had a stylish, bar-like ambiance, a chic setting that made it easy to relax. Although reviews mention the owner speaks little English, I found the staff welcoming, and the food more than made up for any language barrier. I savored each skewer, appreciating the smoky flavor imparted by the charcoal grill. It was an unconventional but satisfying way to kick off my adventures, providing me with the energy I needed for the day ahead.

With a full stomach, I set off towards Yamanaka Onsen. The journey itself was a treat, as the scenery transformed from cityscapes to lush, green landscapes. Yamanaka Onsen is one of the four onsen towns near Kaga Station. As the bus wound its way through the mountains, I couldn't help but reflect on my life back in Montreal. Sophie and Mateo were probably just starting their day, Sophie heading to the library and Mateo getting ready for his summer activities. I made a mental note to buy them both souvenirs from Yamanaka Onsen, something unique that would remind them of my journey.

Yamanaka Onsen is known for its tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty. As I strolled through the town, I admired the traditional architecture and the peaceful ambiance. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city. I took a leisurely walk along the Kakusenkei Gorge, a stunning ravine that offered breathtaking views. The gorge was lush with greenery, and the sound of the river was incredibly soothing. I imagined returning here with Sophie and Mateo, enjoying a family hike amidst this natural splendor.

After immersing myself in the beauty of Yamanaka Onsen, it was time for lunch. I headed to Kagaya Kanazawa, a restaurant recommended for its use of seasonal Kaga vegetables and fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan. Located in the Kanazawa Station shopping mall, it was easy to access and offered a variety of local dishes.

I opted for the Kagaya Gozen, a set meal that included sashimi, fried foods, and rice with small fish. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The sashimi was incredibly fresh, and the tempura was light and crispy. As I savored each bite, I felt a deep appreciation for the culinary traditions of this region. It was a delightful experience, and I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back home in Montreal. I could already imagine Sophie's delight as I presented her with my rendition of the Kagaya Gozen.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

With my stomach content and my spirit refreshed, I continued my journey to Natadera Temple. This ancient temple, founded in 717 by a Buddhist monk, is nestled in the foothills of Mount Hakusan. As I approached the temple grounds, I was immediately struck by the sense of serenity and peace that permeated the air. The temple is dedicated to the Bodhisattva Kannon, the goddess of mercy, and has been a revered spiritual center for centuries.

The temple grounds were expansive, featuring multiple buildings, a pond garden, and a rock face with meditation caves carved into the cliffside. I began my exploration at the Kondo Hall, which houses a large statue of Kannon. Next door was a treasure house, filled with ancient artifacts and religious relics. I spent some time admiring the intricate details of the statues and the beautiful craftsmanship of the artifacts. It was a humbling experience to be surrounded by so much history and spirituality.

As I ventured further into the temple grounds, I came to the rocky cliffside with the pond garden at its base. Unfortunately, visitors are currently not allowed to climb the cliffside due to safety concerns, but I could still appreciate the beauty of the natural landscape. The rock formations were stunning, and the pond garden was a tranquil oasis. I took a moment to sit by the pond, listening to the gentle sound of the water and feeling the peaceful energy of the surroundings. The temple's monks often meditate in the surrounding forests, and the sounds of nature are an integral part of the temple's daily rituals.

The main shrine, built partially into a large cave, was perhaps the most remarkable feature of Natadera Temple. This cave is believed to purify the mind, a practice referred to as Umarekiyomaru, symbolizing rebirth. Inside the cave, I found the temple's main object of worship, the wooden statue of Kannon. The atmosphere was hushed and reverent, and I felt a deep sense of connection to the spiritual history of this place. I walked through the darkness of the Iwaya Honden, symbolizing emerging from the womb, hoping to be reborn as a new being, purged of my sins.

Before leaving Natadera Temple, I took a moment to climb up to the three-storied pagoda and the observation deck. From this vantage point, I could see the entire temple grounds spread out before me, a tapestry of green forests, rocky cliffs, and ancient buildings. It was a breathtaking sight, and I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such beauty and tranquility. I spent some time reflecting on my life, my family, and my purpose. It was a moment of clarity and peace, a reminder of what truly matters in life.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way back to Kanazawa, stopping for a quick drink at The Londonya Bar. This bar, known for its extensive whiskey collection and cozy atmosphere, seemed like the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. Some reviews mention it can be a bit pricey, but the quality of the drinks and the ambiance made it worth it. The bar has a unique blend of traditional and modern influences, and the owner is known for engaging customers with stories and knowledge.

I ordered a glass of local sake and sat at the bar, listening to the murmur of conversations and the clinking of glasses. The bar had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and I felt a sense of camaraderie with the other patrons. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. As I sipped my sake, I thought about the Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo, Geisha House Shima, and Nishi Chaya District that I plan to visit tomorrow. I'm particularly interested in seeing the Kinpakuya Sakuda Head Shop & Workshop, eager to learn more about the gold leaf craft.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that this journey was more than just a sightseeing trip. It was a spiritual quest, a chance to reconnect with myself and find peace in the midst of a busy life. From the serene beauty of Yamanaka Onsen to the ancient spirituality of Natadera Temple, every moment was a gift. As I headed back to my hotel, I felt a sense of gratitude and contentment. I knew that this was a day I would never forget.

Back in Montreal, I often feel disconnected from my roots, caught up in the routines of daily life. But here, in Kanazawa, I feel a sense of belonging, a connection to something larger than myself. It's a feeling that I want to share with Sophie and Mateo, a feeling that I hope to bring back home with me. Perhaps, one day, we can all embark on this journey together, exploring the spiritual and cultural treasures of Japan.

For now, I will continue to explore and discover, sharing my experiences with you, my readers. Stay tuned for more adventures from Kanazawa, as I continue my solo journey of historical and cultural exploration.
