Farewell, Ausangate: Cusco's Embrace

As our Ausangate trek concludes, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we've shared. It's hard to believe that today marks the final day of our Peruvian adventure. While a part of me is eager to return to Berlin and share these stories with Greta and Leila, another part of me wishes we could linger a little longer in this magical land. Today, we explored the historical depths of Cusco, savoring its culinary delights and immersing ourselves in its vibrant nightlife.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at El Albergue Restaurant in Ollantaytambo. The spread was fantastic, and it was a great way to fuel up before heading back to Cusco. The restaurant's organic dishes and homegrown products were a testament to their commitment to sustainability, something I deeply appreciate. I made sure to grab an extra cup of coffee, knowing we had a full day ahead of us. Saying goodbye to the cozy inn, we boarded our transportation and headed towards Cusco, reminiscing about the incredible views and experiences of the past two weeks. The mountains seemed to wave us goodbye, their peaks already holding promises of future adventures.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

Upon arriving in Cusco, our first stop was Kusicancha, also known as the 'Happy Enclosure'. This Inca palace complex, believed to be the birthplace of the legendary Inca emperor Pachacutec, offered a fascinating glimpse into the heart of the Inca civilization. Wandering through the ancient stone walls, I felt a profound connection to the past. The architecture was a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the Inca people, their advanced building techniques evident in every precisely cut stone. It was amazing to imagine what life was like here centuries ago, in the heart of the Inca Empire. The site is located close to the main square, Plaza de Armas, making it easily accessible and a must-visit for anyone exploring Cusco. I made sure to take my time, appreciating the details in the architecture and the artifacts on display, each telling a story of a civilization that once thrived in these highlands.

Next, we made our way to C. Hatunrumiyoc, a pedestrian street renowned for its well-preserved Incan architecture and the famous Twelve-Angled Stone. As we strolled along the cobbled street, I was struck by the seamless integration of Inca and colonial architecture. The Twelve-Angled Stone itself was a marvel, its twelve corners fitting perfectly with the surrounding stones without the use of mortar. It's a testament to the precision and mastery of Inca builders. The street was bustling with craft vendors selling handmade items, and I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs for Greta and Leila. The vibrant atmosphere and historical significance of Hatunrumiyoc made it a highlight of our day.

For lunch, we headed to Inka Grill, a restaurant recommended for its Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant's ambiance was upscale and inviting, and the menu offered a wide array of traditional Peruvian dishes with a modern twist. I decided to try the Novo Andean Sampler, which included a variety of Peruvian specialties. The alpaca brochettes were a standout, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Josh, one of my travel partners, particularly enjoyed the quinoa croquettes, praising their creamy texture and rich flavor. Overall, Inka Grill provided a delightful culinary experience, showcasing the diverse and flavorful cuisine of Peru.

As evening approached, we sought out Morena Peruvian Kitchen for dinner, a spot I'd discovered through online recommendations. The restaurant's dedication to preserving Peruvian culinary traditions was evident in every dish. The staff's eagerness to share stories about the dishes and ingredients added a layer of cultural immersion to the experience. I opted for the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian stir-fry, and it was absolutely delicious. The passionfruit cheesecake was the perfect ending, a sweet and tangy treat that left me completely satisfied. Morena Peruvian Kitchen truly offered a memorable Peruvian food journey.

To celebrate our final night, we ventured to Mythology, a popular bar in Cusco. Mythology is known for its vibrant party scene and eclectic mix of music, attracting both locals and tourists. The bar offers free salsa classes early in the evening, which we enthusiastically participated in, much to the amusement of the seasoned dancers. As the night progressed, the atmosphere transformed into a lively club setting, with people dancing to a mix of Latin and Western music. It was a fantastic way to let loose and celebrate the end of our incredible trek. The $25,000 impressive sound system kept us dancing until the early hours.

Our final day in Cusco was a whirlwind of cultural exploration, culinary delights, and lively nightlife. From the historical depths of Kusicancha and C. Hatunrumiyoc to the flavorful dishes at Inka Grill and Morena Peruvian Kitchen, and the vibrant atmosphere of Mythology, we truly immersed ourselves in the heart of Cusco. It was a fitting end to our Ausangate trek, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime. As I prepare to return to Berlin, I carry with me the warmth of the Peruvian people, the beauty of the Andean landscapes, and the spirit of adventure that has defined this journey. I know that this is not goodbye, but rather a 'see you later,' as I hope to return to Peru someday soon, perhaps with Greta and Leila in tow.

Tomorrow, I'll be heading to the airport, ready to fly back to Berlin. It's always a bittersweet feeling, leaving a place that has captured my heart. But I'm also excited to see my family and share all the incredible stories from this adventure. Until next time, Peru! Aloha!
