Cusco's Charms: A Day of Discovery
Today was a day of gentle exploration around Cusco, a city that continues to surprise me with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I set out with my friends, eager to see a different side of Peru, one that wasn't quite as physically demanding as the Ausangate Trek, but just as enriching.
Our first stop was the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary. I've always had a soft spot for animals, and the idea of supporting a place that rescues and rehabilitates creatures in need resonated deeply with me. Plus, after the intensity of the trek, a slower paced morning sounded perfect.

Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary: A Haven for Wildlife
The sanctuary is located a short drive from Cusco, nestled in the rolling hills of the Sacred Valley. As we arrived, I was immediately struck by the peaceful atmosphere. It wasn't a fancy zoo, but rather a place dedicated to the well-being of its residents. We were greeted by a guide who shared the stories of the animals – condors, pumas, alpacas, and even a few Andean mountain cats.
It was truly moving to hear how these animals had been rescued from abusive situations, like the pumas that were saved from a nightclub where they were drugged and mistreated. The sanctuary provides a safe haven for them to recover and, in some cases, return to the wild. Seeing the dedication of the staff was inspiring, and it reminded me of the importance of supporting ethical tourism.
It's not enough to just see the world; we must care for it and protect its inhabitants.
One of the highlights was getting up close with the alpacas and llamas. Their gentle nature and fluffy wool were irresistible, and we couldn't resist snapping a few photos. We even saw a few vicuñas, the wild cousins of llamas and alpacas. They looked like a cross between a camel and an alpaca. I learned a lot about the Camelidae family, and the guide told us that the indigenous Aymara and Quechua people consider the Andean mountain cat a sacred animal.
Ancient Echoes at Chachabamba
After a heartwarming morning with the animals, we journeyed to Chachabamba, an Inca site located near the Urubamba River. This archaeological site is often overlooked, but it holds a significant place in Inca history as a ceremonial complex and checkpoint along the Inca road system.

As we walked through the ruins, I couldn't help but imagine what life was like during the Inca Empire. Chachabamba was believed to be a place for ritual purification before pilgrims entered Machu Picchu. The site features temples, water channels, and ceremonial fountains, all meticulously crafted from stone. The intricate stonework and the strategic location of the site showcased the Incas' impressive engineering skills and their deep connection to the natural world.
The name Chachabamba has a few possible meanings. Some say it means valley of mosquito bites, while another translation suggests valley of the origin of the waters. Either way, it's a fascinating place to explore and contemplate the rich history of this region. The site is located 2,170 meters above sea level. The weather was warm and tropical.
A Culinary Journey Through Cusco
All that exploring made us hungry, so we headed back to Cusco for a culinary adventure. Our first stop was MAP Café for breakfast, a place I had heard so much about. Located in the courtyard of the Pre-Columbian Art Museum, the café is a modern, all-glass pavilion that blends seamlessly with the colonial architecture. The atmosphere was sophisticated and artistic, and the menu featured creative takes on Peruvian classics.

I opted for the adobo cusqueño, a slow-cooked pork dish that was incredibly tender and flavorful. The fusion of local ingredients with innovative techniques was a testament to Cusco's evolving gastronomic scene. Greta would love this place, I thought, making a mental note to bring her here when we return together. The chef, Coque Ossio, is known for his talents and business knowledge. He trained under Alain Passard in Paris.
For lunch, we ventured to Mamá Jama Restaurant, a restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian dishes with a focus on potatoes. The menu was extensive, and I decided to try the papa rellena, a stuffed potato dish that's a staple in Peruvian cuisine. It was hearty and satisfying, the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventures.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to dinner at Qamaq Restaurante, a cozy spot with a neighborhood vibe. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. I ordered the trout with garlic, which was fresh and flavorful, a true taste of the Andes. The prices were also very reasonable.

Discovering Cusco's Concept Stores
Before dinner, we took some time to explore Cusco's concept stores. I'm always on the lookout for unique souvenirs and locally made goods, and Cusco didn't disappoint. We stumbled upon a concept store that caught my eye. It was filled with handmade clothing, jewelry, and accessories, all crafted by local artisans.

I ended up buying a few small gifts for Leila and Greta. It felt good to support the local economy and bring home something truly special. These stores offer a contemporary spin on Peruvian fashion, art, and decor. I saw a Frida Kahlo jacket at one of the stores. There are a number of trendy shops that go against the grain of the usual tourist-filled shops.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the diverse facets of Cusco. From the heartwarming encounters at the animal sanctuary to the ancient echoes of Chachabamba and the culinary delights of the city, every moment has been a treasure. And tomorrow, we'll explore more of Cusco's historic sites, including Kusicancha and C. Hatunrumiyoc, before ending our journey with a final Peruvian dinner. I'm already looking forward to it.
I'm so glad I didn't forget my camera today, unlike my portable phone charger. I definitely want to have it charged for tomorrow's outing, and I'll make sure to have an extra memory card ready.
This trip has made me appreciate the importance of slowing down and savoring the journey. It's not just about ticking off destinations on a list, but about connecting with the people, the culture, and the natural world around us. And as I prepare for our final day in Peru, I'm excited to see what other wonders await us.
