Exploring the Ausangate Trek: A Journey through Peru's Andean Wonders
Day 8: Reaching New Heights: A Day of Awe at Ausangate
Experience the breathtaking beauty of Ausangate! Join my trek through the Peruvian Andes, filled with stunning views and cultural immersion.
A Day Among Giants
Today was a day of pure, unadulterated awe. As part of our ongoing trek through the Peruvian Andes, my friends and I had the privilege of experiencing Ausangate in all its glory. It’s a day I know I’ll be recounting for years to come, filled with moments that tested our limits and rewarded us with sights beyond imagination.
The morning started early, as most trekking days do, with a hearty breakfast at El Tupay Restaurant in Cusco. I always appreciate a good breakfast before a long day of hiking. El Tupay Restaurant is located in the Belmond Hotel Monasterio. Knowing we had a challenging day ahead, I loaded up on carbs and protein, fueling my body for the high-altitude adventure that awaited. The El Tupay Restaurant is housed in what was once the monastery's refectory, offering traditional Peruvian cuisine. I enjoyed the mushrooms, asparagus, fava beans, and sun-dried tomato, which was a perfect match with a glass of Intipalka.
As we ventured out, the air was crisp and cool, a typical December morning in the Andes. December marks the start of summer in Peru, but up here, that translates to sunny days with the increasing chance of rain showers. Bundled in layers, we set off towards Ausangate, the mountain looming large in the distance, a constant reminder of the challenge and beauty that lay ahead.

The trek itself was demanding, the altitude testing our endurance with every step. At over 6,300 meters, Ausangate's high altitude made temperatures stay cool. Even though I've been trying to get used to the altitude, it was still challenging. I focused on my breathing, remembering the tips I'd read about acclimatization. It's essential to take it slow and drink plenty of water. The landscape was a mix of rocky terrain, vibrant green valleys, and snow-capped peaks, a visual feast that kept our spirits high despite the physical strain. I was glad I had packed my hiking boots and warm clothing, remembering how I had forgotten my portable phone charger and extra memory card back in Berlin.
We stopped for lunch at Restaurante Pizzeria Ausangate. I wasn’t expecting much in terms of culinary delights in such a remote location, but I was pleasantly surprised. The simple, hearty meal gave us the energy we needed to continue our journey. We enjoyed tasty salads, and the restaurant had friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere.

It's not just about reaching a destination; it's about the journey, the shared moments, and the personal growth experienced along the way.
The afternoon brought us to Mirador Ausangate, a viewpoint that offered panoramic vistas of the entire Ausangate range. The view was simply breathtaking. The sheer scale of the mountains, the glaciers glistening in the afternoon sun, and the vastness of the landscape stretching out before us—it was a moment of profound connection with nature. I took a moment to soak it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such beauty. It was a reminder of why I started this blog in the first place: to share these incredible experiences with all of you and inspire you to seek out your own adventures.

Altitude sickness is a real concern when trekking at this height. I was grateful that none of us experienced severe symptoms, but we all felt the effects of the thin air. We took frequent breaks, sipped on coca tea, and encouraged each other to keep going. It’s moments like these that highlight the importance of traveling with friends. Their support and camaraderie made the challenging parts of the trek more bearable, and the rewarding moments even more special.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back towards Cusco, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. We had dinner at Yaku Restaurant. The restaurant combines Peruvian culinary traditions with a modern twist. I was impressed by the presentation of each plate. The staff was warm and attentive, and the ambiance was cozy, with charming decor and fireplaces. I tried the grilled alpaca steak, which was perfectly cooked. I also enjoyed the quinoa chaufa. I found the service to be fast.

After dinner, we decided to check out Chango Club Cusco. The club had good music, but it lacked ventilation. It had a 100% discotheque atmosphere. It was a fun way to unwind after a long day of trekking, and it gave us a glimpse into Cusco’s nightlife scene. I noticed that the club is known as a gay-friendly night spot.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that it wasn’t just about the stunning landscapes or the physical challenge, it was about the personal growth that comes from pushing your limits and experiencing something truly extraordinary. It’s about disconnecting from the everyday and connecting with nature, with friends, and with yourself.
Tomorrow, we continue our trek, venturing further into the Ausangate region. We will be visiting Ausangate Trekking Peru and Farallones de Tecsecocha. I’m excited to see what new wonders await us, and I look forward to sharing those experiences with you all. For now, I’m grateful for today’s memories and the lessons learned. I'm also grateful for my warm bed at the Novotel Cusco! I need a good night's sleep before tomorrow's adventure!
