A Day of Discovery on the Ausangate Trail
Aloha, Evendo travelers! Today marked the ninth day of our Ausangate adventure, and it was filled with incredible sights, sounds, and flavors. From the majestic Farallones de Tecsecocha to the vibrant artisan markets, every moment felt like a true immersion into the heart of Peru. I'm excited to share the experiences of this day with you all.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Calle del Medio Restaurante Bar. The restaurant is located right above the Plaza de Armas. It was a cozy spot, and I fueled up with some delicious Peruvian coffee and local pastries, readying myself for the day’s adventures. The others enjoyed the view of the mysterious cathedral while enjoying their food. It’s amazing how a good meal can set the tone for the entire day.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Farallones de Tecsecocha. The cliffs are about an hour and a half from Cusco in the Ccorca district. The views were nothing short of spectacular. The Farallones themselves are rock formations that rise dramatically from the landscape, and the nearby Tecsecocha Waterfall added a refreshing touch to the scenery. The waterfall is about 50 meters high. I couldn't help but think of the waterfalls back home in Hilo, though these had a unique Andean charm. The weather in December is temperate-cold, with dry and wet seasons. Luckily, we had a day with no rain.
The beauty of the Ausangate Trek lies not just in its landscapes, but in the vibrant culture and resilient spirit of the people who call this land home.
After taking in the natural beauty of the Farallones, we made our way back to Cusco for lunch at Inti House. I opted for the Cuy al horno cusqueño, a traditional baked guinea pig dish. It was a culinary adventure, to say the least, and a true taste of Cusco. Greta, adventurous as always, joined me, while the others chose some of the other dishes Inti House is known for, such as Mazamorra morada con arroz con leche. The restaurant promotes the cultural customs of the Cusco region.
With the afternoon still ahead of us, we decided to immerse ourselves in the local culture with a visit to ARTESANÍAS ASUNTA. The place was a treasure trove of Peruvian handicrafts. I was on the hunt for some unique souvenirs, and this shop did not disappoint. I ended up buying a beautifully woven alpaca scarf for Greta and a small, hand-carved wooden toy for Leila. Supporting local artisans is something I always prioritize, and ARTESANÍAS ASUNTA made it easy with their incredible selection and friendly atmosphere. You can find a wide array of handcrafted products.
As the day wound down, we gathered for dinner at Mamá Jama Restaurant. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, and the menu featured a variety of Peruvian dishes. I chose the Lomo Saltado de Alpaca, which was flavorful and satisfying. We shared stories and laughs over dinner, reminiscing about the incredible journey we’ve been on together. It’s moments like these that make traveling with friends so special.
Before heading back to the Novotel Cusco, we took a stroll through the Plaza de Armas. The square was bustling with activity, and the energy was infectious. Street performers entertained the crowds, and the illuminated cathedral stood tall and majestic against the night sky. I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day and the opportunity to explore this beautiful city.
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the chance to discover hidden gems, taste new flavors, and connect with different cultures. As I reflect on our adventures, I’m filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. We're planning to see the Bosque de Piedras and Campo Base Ausangate. Until then, aloha and sweet dreams from Cusco!
The weather in Cusco in December can be unpredictable. While we were lucky to have a mostly dry day, it's always wise to be prepared for rain. Packing essentials like a waterproof jacket and sturdy hiking boots can make all the difference.
The Ausangate Trek is known to be challenging, but the rewards are well worth the effort. The high altitude and variable weather conditions require proper acclimatization and preparation. Spending a few days in Cusco before starting the trek is essential.
Cusco offers many options for dining. From traditional Peruvian cuisine to international flavors, there's something for everyone. Be sure to try local specialties like Cuy al horno and Mazamorra morada.
ARTESANÍAS ASUNTA is a great place to find unique souvenirs and support local artisans. The shop offers a wide variety of handcrafted products at reasonable prices. Don't be afraid to haggle a bit to get the best deal.
The Plaza de Armas is the heart of Cusco and a must-see destination. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, including the Cusco Cathedral. Take some time to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy the local culture.
Tomorrow, we’re planning to visit Bosque de Piedras and Campo Base Ausangate. I’ve heard amazing things about both locations, and I can’t wait to explore them with my friends. We'll be having breakfast at El Albergue Restaurant, lunch at GRUPO ADVENTURE 7 LAGUNAS AUSANGATE Y BAÑOS TERMALES PACCHANTA, and dinner at Artisano Regocijo Restaurant. We might also check out Oxygen Lounge and Cafe for a nightcap. It’s going to be another exciting day on the Ausangate Trek!
As I prepare for another day of adventure, I’m reminded of the importance of cherishing these moments and sharing them with the world. Until next time, aloha and safe travels!
I’m so grateful to be sharing this adventure with my friends. Their laughter and camaraderie have made this journey even more memorable. I know that these are experiences we’ll cherish for a lifetime.
This trip has reinforced my belief in the power of travel to connect us with different cultures and broaden our perspectives. I’m committed to sustainable tourism and supporting local communities wherever I go. It’s important to me that my travels have a positive impact on the world.
Back in Berlin, Greta and Leila are always in my thoughts. I can’t wait to share my stories and photos with them when I return. I know they’ll be excited to hear about all the amazing things I’ve seen and done. This trip is not just for me; it’s for my family, and I want to bring back as much knowledge and inspiration as possible.
The Aloha spirit is alive and well in Peru. The warmth and friendliness of the people have made me feel right at home. I’m constantly reminded of the values of kindness, generosity, and respect that are so important in Hawaiian culture. It’s amazing how these values transcend borders and connect us all as human beings.
