Echoes of the Incas and Flavors of Peru

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Peruvian culture and history. From exploring ancient ruins to immersing ourselves in the vibrant local markets and indulging in the exquisite flavors of Cusco, it was a day that truly awakened the senses. It's amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day, and I'm excited to share all the details with you.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at MAP Café. Located in the courtyard of the Museo de Arte Precolombino, the atmosphere was as delightful as the food itself. Greta particularly enjoyed the quinoa canelones, while I opted for a classic Peruvian breakfast with a modern twist. It’s a fantastic spot to start the day, surrounded by art and history.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Sacred Valley. The valley is stunning, with its rolling green hills and snow-capped mountains in the distance. It's easy to see why the Incas considered this area sacred. The air is crisp and clean, and the views are simply breathtaking. I couldn't help but think of my childhood in Hilo, Hawaii, where nature also holds a special place in the hearts of the people.

Next on our list was Saqsaywaman. This ancient Inca fortress is an incredible feat of engineering, with massive stones fitted together perfectly without mortar. Walking through the site, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity and skill of the Inca people. The views of Cusco from Saqsaywaman are also spectacular. As I stood there, gazing over the city, I felt a deep connection to the past and a sense of awe at the enduring legacy of the Inca civilization.

After a morning of exploring ancient ruins, it was time to immerse ourselves in the vibrant energy of Mercado Central de San Pedro. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, with colorful displays of fruits, vegetables, meats, and handicrafts. The air is filled with the aroma of local spices and the sounds of vendors calling out their wares. I enjoyed haggling for souvenirs and sampling some of the local delicacies. Greta, ever the curator, was fascinated by the variety of textiles and the intricate designs of the handicrafts. It was a true immersion into the daily life of Cusco. I even managed to find a few unique ingredients I plan to try incorporating into some dishes back in Berlin, bringing a little bit of Peru back home with me.

For lunch, we headed to Pachapapa, a charming restaurant in the San Blas district. The restaurant has a cozy courtyard and a rustic ambiance. We sat outside, enjoying the warm afternoon sun and the lively atmosphere. I decided to be adventurous and try the cuy (guinea pig), a local delicacy. It was definitely a unique culinary experience! Greta opted for a more traditional dish, the ají de gallina, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Qespi Restaurant & Bar for dinner. Located in the JW Marriott El Convento Cusco, the restaurant offers a sophisticated dining experience with a focus on local ingredients and innovative cuisine. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the service was impeccable. We savored every bite of our meal, reflecting on the incredible day we had experienced. I tried a cocktail made with local herbs, a testament to the bar's innovative approach, while Greta enjoyed a glass of Peruvian wine.

Before heading back to the hotel, we took a leisurely stroll through the Plaza de Armas, the main square of Cusco. The square was beautifully lit up, and the atmosphere was festive. We watched as locals and tourists alike mingled and enjoyed the evening air. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we are heading to Ausangate and Mirador Ausangate to experience the breathtaking views of the region. I’m excited to see what adventures await us as we continue our journey through Peru. And perhaps, after a day of hiking, we’ll unwind at Chango Club Cusco.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It’s about more than just seeing new places; it’s about experiencing new cultures, trying new foods, and connecting with people from all walks of life. As I reflect on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible country and to share my experiences with you all. Aloha!

Cusco is known for its festivals, and while we didn't coincide with Inti Raymi at Saqsayhuaman, I've read about the processions for the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción which takes place later in December. I'll keep an eye out for smaller celebrations as we explore.
