Day 10: Embracing the Andean Majesty

Today was a day of immense beauty and quiet reflection amidst the grandeur of the Andes. Leaving the cozy comforts of El Albergue Restaurant after a hearty breakfast, we ventured into landscapes that whispered ancient stories and displayed nature's artistry in its most raw form. It was a day where the physical challenge met profound serenity, reminding me why I traded the familiar comforts of Berlin for this exhilarating journey.

Our first destination was the legendary Bosque de Piedras. The drive there was an adventure in itself, the scenery transforming into a surreal canvas of towering rock formations. As we approached, the landscape opened up to reveal the stone forest in all its glory. The Bosque de Piedras, or Stone Forest, is a mesmerizing collection of volcanic rock formations sculpted by millennia of wind and weather. Standing at an altitude of over 4,310 meters (14,140 feet), the air was crisp and thin, adding to the otherworldly atmosphere.

Wandering through the Bosque de Piedras felt like stepping onto another planet. The rocks, some resembling human profiles and others taking on the shapes of animals, stood as silent sentinels guarding secrets of the past. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and insignificance in the face of such ancient artistry. The sheer scale of the formations was humbling, each rock a testament to the power of nature's slow, deliberate hand. I tried to capture the essence of the place with my camera, but no photograph could truly convey the feeling of being there, surrounded by these colossal sculptures.

I found myself reflecting on my life back in Berlin. The structured days of marketing consultancy, the familiar rhythm of city life, all seemed so distant. Here, amidst the silent stones and vast skies, I felt a sense of freedom I hadn't realized I was missing. It was a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are those that take us far from our comfort zones, both physically and mentally.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in the destination, but in the journey itself, and the quiet moments of reflection along the way.

After spending a good part of the morning exploring the Stone Forest, we made our way towards Campo Base Ausangate. The trek to the base camp was challenging, but the views more than made up for the exertion. The towering peaks of Ausangate loomed in the distance, their snow-capped summits piercing the sky. The air was thin, and each step required a conscious effort, but the camaraderie among our group kept our spirits high.

We stopped for lunch at a local spot, GRUPO ADVENTURE 7 LAGUNAS AUSANGATE Y BAÑOS TERMALES PACCHANTA, which was basic but nourishing. The hearty meal fortified us for the afternoon's hike. As we continued our ascent, the landscape transformed once again, trading the rocky terrain for sweeping valleys and icy streams. The weather in December around Ausangate is characterized by cool temperatures and frequent rain showers, so we were well-prepared with waterproof gear. Despite the occasional drizzle, the scenery was breathtaking, and the experience was surreal.

Reaching Campo Base Ausangate was a moment of triumph. Standing at the foot of the majestic mountain, I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. The sheer scale of Ausangate was awe-inspiring, its snow-covered peaks reaching towards the heavens. The base camp itself was a hive of activity, with trekkers from all over the world sharing stories and preparing for their own ascents. I soaked in the atmosphere, feeling a sense of connection to these fellow adventurers, united by our shared love for the mountains. The altitude at Campo Base Ausangate is approximately 4,800m/15,744ft.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Cusco, our bodies tired but our spirits soaring. We had dinner at Artisano Regocijo Restaurant in Cusco. The restaurant is located in Plaza Regocijo, not far from Plaza de Armas, and is housed in a historic colonial building that was once the Casa de la Moneda. The ambiance was warm and inviting, the perfect setting to reflect on the day's adventures. I savored traditional Cusquenian cuisine, the flavors a delightful reminder of the local culture we were immersed in. The Ossobuco, slow-cooked with Marcahuasi wine, was particularly memorable.

Before heading back to the Novotel Cusco, I decided to check out Oxygen Lounge and Cafe for a quick drink. I had heard that oxygen therapy could help with altitude acclimatization, so I was curious to see what it was all about. The lounge was cozy and welcoming, and I enjoyed a refreshing drink while chatting with some of the other patrons. It was a pleasant way to wind down after a long day, and I definitely felt a bit more energized as a result.

As I lay in bed, I thought about tomorrow's itinerary. We plan to visit Valle Rojo Pitumarca Rio Rojo and Upis qocha. I am excited to see what new wonders await us. The prospect of exploring new landscapes and pushing my physical limits fills me with anticipation. This journey is more than just a trek; it's a chance to connect with nature, challenge myself, and discover new facets of my own being. And I can't wait to share it all with you.

I am also happy that I remembered to pack my hiking boots and warm clothing, but I am still kicking myself for forgetting my portable phone charger and an extra memory card for my camera.
