Family Adventure in Kyoto: Exploring Japan's Cultural Heart
Day 15: Kyoto's Temples and Tranquil Evenings: A Perfect Farewell
Reflecting on Kyoto's serene temples and vibrant nightlife, a perfect end to our family's cultural adventure in Japan.
Kyoto's Final Bow
As our Kyoto adventure draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of contentment and a tinge of sadness. This journey has been more than just a vacation; it's been an immersion into a world of serene beauty, rich history, and profound cultural experiences. Today, we explored more of Kyoto's stunning temples and found a cozy spot to reflect on our incredible journey.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nakamura. It was the perfect start to fuel our explorations. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, savoring the delicate flavors and textures. Leila, of course, went straight for the tamagoyaki, while Greta enjoyed the miso soup. It's funny how even the simplest meals here feel special, imbued with a sense of tradition and care.

First on our itinerary was Daigo-ji Temple, a sprawling complex nestled against the mountains southeast of Kyoto. The journey there was straightforward, involving a subway ride that gave us a glimpse into the daily lives of Kyoto's residents. Upon arrival, the sheer scale of Daigo-ji was immediately striking. It's divided into several areas, each requiring separate admission, but we opted for the combination ticket to experience it all. The Sanboin Garden was the first stop, and it truly lived up to its reputation as one of the most exquisite Japanese gardens I've ever seen. Unfortunately, photos were not allowed inside, but the memory of the meticulously manicured landscapes and serene atmosphere is etched in my mind. The Reihokan Museum, while interesting, didn't quite capture our attention as much as the other areas.

However, Shimo Daigo more than made up for any initial disappointment. The Kondo, a national treasure, stood majestically, while the Gojo-no-to pagoda, over a thousand years old, was a sight to behold. We spent a good hour wandering the grounds, soaking in the history and tranquility. The Bentendo Hall, with its picturesque lake, was a particularly enchanting spot. I can only imagine how stunning it must be in the fall when the maple trees are ablaze with color. Greta was particularly captivated by the five-story pagoda, a testament to ancient craftsmanship and resilience. Leila, ever the curious one, peppered us with questions about the temple's history and the stories behind the various structures.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the way it invites you to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the simple moments.
Next, we headed to Fushimi Inari Taisha Otabisho. While not as widely known as the main Fushimi Inari Shrine, this location offered a more intimate experience. The thousands of vermilion torii gates were still a breathtaking sight, winding their way up the mountainside. We didn't hike to the summit this time, but we enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the lower sections, taking in the spiritual atmosphere and the stunning views. The vibrant colors of the gates against the backdrop of the lush forest created a mesmerizing scene. I made sure to get a few good shots, mindful of capturing the essence of this iconic Shinto shrine.

For lunch, we chose Yasakadori Enraku, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine and calm atmosphere. We were seated in a private room, which added to the intimate dining experience. The oden, a Japanese hotpot dish, was the star of the meal. The broth was light yet deeply flavorful, and the ingredients were fresh and carefully prepared. Greta raved about the delicate dashi flavors, while Leila enjoyed the variety of ingredients, from tofu to chicken wings. It was a comforting and satisfying meal, perfect for a chilly spring day.

Our final temple visit of the day was to Tōji Temple, famous for its towering five-story pagoda, the tallest wooden structure in Japan. Fortunately, during this special opening, we were able to enter the first floor of the pagoda, which is normally closed to the public. Inside, we marveled at the central pillar and the surrounding Buddhist statues. The sheer scale and craftsmanship of the pagoda were awe-inspiring. Outside, the temple grounds were bustling with activity, as it was market day. We browsed the various stalls, admiring the antiques, crafts, and kimonos on display. It was a lively and colorful scene, offering a glimpse into Kyoto's local culture.

As evening approached, we decided to indulge in a special dinner at Kōtō-in Temple. The temple is known for its unique atmosphere and serene gardens. While it's usually a cafe, we were able to arrange a special dinner, which turned out to be an unforgettable experience. The meal was a multi-course vegetarian feast, each dish artfully presented and bursting with flavor. The tranquil surroundings of the temple added to the magical ambiance. It felt like we were dining in a world apart, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city.

To cap off our final night in Kyoto, I ventured out solo to Bar Ixey, a hidden gem in the Gion district. This cozy bar is known for its vintage ambiance and innovative cocktails, specializing in herbal liqueurs. The bartender was a true artist, crafting unique and flavorful drinks using herbs from his own garden. I savored each sip, reflecting on our incredible journey through Japan. The personalized service and the sophisticated atmosphere made it a perfect ending to our Kyoto adventure. It was a great opportunity to unwind and enjoy a moment of peace before our departure.
