Solo Expedition to the Tottori Sand Dunes
Day 2: Conquering the Dunes: A Day of Sand and Seafood in Tottori
Exploring Tottori's majestic sand dunes, from scenic views to horseback riding and delightful local cuisine. A perfect solo adventure!
A Day Among Giants
The second day of my solo adventure in Tottori was nothing short of spectacular. I woke up with a sense of excitement, eager to explore the famed sand dunes and immerse myself in the local culture. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, unique experiences, and, of course, delicious food. The weather was typical for July, with temperatures already climbing as I prepared to head out, sunscreen being my best friend.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ray Garden. It's a modern-style café with a garden, located just a short walk from the dunes. The cafe was bathed in natural light, thanks to its glass walls, and had a relaxing view of the garden. It was the perfect spot to fuel up for a day of exploration. I enjoyed a lovely set breakfast, filled with fresh, local ingredients, while planning my route for the day.

From there, I made my way to the Sakyu Center Observation Terrace. The terrace offers panoramic views of the Tottori Sand Dunes and the Sea of Japan. I decided to take the sky lift across to the dunes. From above, the view was magnificent – the undulating sand stretching out towards the horizon. The sky lift was a unique experience, providing an entry point to appreciate the grand scale of the dunes. It was a great way to begin the day, offering a perfect vantage point to soak in the landscape before diving right in.

After taking in the views from the observation terrace, I decided to experience the dunes up close. I made my way to Horse Back Dune. It's a popular spot for those wanting to experience the magnitude of the dunes. The climb to the top was challenging but rewarding. The wind was strong, and the sand shifted beneath my feet, but the view from the summit was simply stunning. The vast expanse of sand meeting the blue of the Sea of Japan created a surreal and unforgettable landscape.

I spent a good amount of time simply wandering through the dunes, taking photos and enjoying the solitude. It was a truly meditative experience, a chance to connect with nature and clear my head. As I walked, I couldn't help but think of Hans and how much he would have loved this view. I made a mental note to bring him here someday. The dunes are also known as *Umanose*, which translates to Horse Back, making it a unique experience.
After all that walking, it was time for lunch. I headed over to Drive in Sakyu, a restaurant with views of the dunes and the Sea of Japan. It’s known for its playful dishes. I decided to try the Dune Umi-top Beef Bone Champon. It was a unique and tasty experience, with ground sesame seeds that you pour on the dish like sand. It was the perfect way to refuel after my trek through the dunes.

With the sun beginning to dip lower in the sky, I decided to embrace one of the more touristy activities: a horseback ride on the dunes. I have to admit, I felt a bit silly at first, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. The guides were friendly, and the camels seemed well-cared for. Riding through the dunes on camelback offered a completely different perspective, and it was a great way to see more of the landscape without tiring myself out too much.
As the day wound down, I made my way to Ichiba-Shokudo Karo for dinner. This seafood restaurant is known for its fresh, high-quality seafood and casual atmosphere. I indulged in a sashimi platter, savoring the delicate flavors of the local catch. The staff were incredibly welcoming, guiding me through the menu and recommending some of their daily specials.

To cap off the day, I decided to check out Shuvi du Bar, a local bar known for its craft hamburgers and vegan options. While I wasn’t in the mood for a burger, I enjoyed a refreshing drink and soaked in the lively atmosphere. It was a great way to relax and unwind after a full day of exploring. I learned that Shuvi du Bar is actively collaborating with local farms to overcome food waste, which aligns with my interest in sustainable living.

Before heading back to my Ryokan, I took a moment to reflect on the day. The Tottori Sand Dunes had exceeded my expectations, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and delicious food. It was a day of solitude and exploration, a chance to connect with myself and the world around me. As I prepared for my next day's adventure, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a special place. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Tottori Karo Crab Aquarium and the Watanabe Museum. I’m particularly excited about the aquarium, as I’ve heard it’s a fascinating place to learn about the local marine life.
The day had a few minor hiccups. I realized I had forgotten my Japanese phrasebook and portable phone charger. Note to self: always double-check the essentials! Despite these minor setbacks, the day was a resounding success. I am reminded of the importance of being prepared, even for spontaneous adventures.
As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. The Tottori Sand Dunes had cast their spell on me, and I knew that this was an experience I would cherish for years to come. The combination of breathtaking landscapes, unique activities, and delicious food had made this day truly unforgettable.
And now, I must get some rest so I can get up for tomorrow’s adventure to the Tottori Karo Crab Aquarium and the Watanabe Museum. I’m looking forward to learning more about the local marine life and exploring the art and history of the region. Goodnight, and stay tuned for more tales from my solo expedition!
