Solo Expedition to the Tottori Sand Dunes
Day 9: Farewell to the Dunes: Reflecting on a Solo Journey in Tottori
A final day of reflection and cultural immersion at the Tottori Sand Dunes, savoring local flavors and bidding farewell to Japan.
A Fond Farewell
As my solo expedition to the Tottori Sand Dunes draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past nine days. This journey has been a unique blend of serene landscapes, cultural immersion, and personal introspection. Today, my final day, was all about savoring the last moments and soaking in the essence of this beautiful region.
The morning began with a delightful breakfast at Takahama Café. Designed by Kengo Kuma, the café itself is a work of art, blending seamlessly with the surrounding dunes. The architecture, with its wooden accents and panoramic views, offered a perfect setting to enjoy a traditional Japanese breakfast. I savored every bite, appreciating the fresh, local ingredients and the tranquil ambiance. It felt like a fitting start to a day dedicated to reflection and appreciation.

The beauty of solo travel lies in its ability to amplify the present moment, making every experience a profound connection with oneself and the surroundings.
After breakfast, I decided to explore the Yuyama district Scallion field. Although July isn't the blooming season, the fields were still a sight to behold. Vast expanses of green stretched out before me, a testament to the agricultural richness of the region. I learned that in late October and early November, these fields transform into a sea of violet, a spectacle I'll definitely keep in mind for a future visit. It was a humbling experience to witness the dedication of the local farmers and their connection to the land.

Next on my itinerary was the Tottori Sand Dunes Park Service Center. I wanted to delve deeper into the history and ecology of the dunes before bidding them farewell. The center provided a wealth of information about the formation of the dunes, the unique flora and fauna that thrive in this environment, and the ongoing efforts to preserve this natural wonder. I was particularly fascinated by the exhibits on the drought-tolerant plants and animals, a testament to nature's resilience.

For lunch, I chose Umenoi, a restaurant known for its traditional Kaiseki dining and local cuisine. Opting for the eel, *Unaju*, I savored the flavors of Tottori. The restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients was evident in every dish, and the meal was a culinary journey through the region's rich gastronomic landscape. It was a perfect opportunity to reflect on the delicious discoveries I've made throughout this trip.

In the afternoon, I ventured to Rakudaya Co., Ltd., eager to pick up a few souvenirs for Hans and myself. The shop offered a variety of local products, from Twenty Century Pears to camel-themed trinkets. I carefully selected a few items, hoping to capture the essence of my journey and share it with my husband back home in Heidelberg. I even considered a camel ride, but decided to simply take some photos, as I was happy enough from my walk through the dunes. It's quite unusual to see them crossing the crosswalk, which I found amusing.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to KaiyoTei for a final dinner in Tottori. This seafood restaurant is renowned for its fresh catches from the Sea of Japan. I indulged in a seafood feast, savoring the flavors of white squid and ghost shrimp, local delicacies that were both unique and delicious. The ambiance of the restaurant, with its natural fish tanks, added to the authenticity of the experience.

Reflecting on my time here, I realize how much this solo trip has rejuvenated my spirit. As someone who values sustainable living, I was impressed by Tottori's commitment to preserving its natural environment and promoting local produce. The Tottori Sand Dunes, with their ever-changing landscape, are a symbol of nature's power and resilience. This journey has reminded me of the importance of connecting with nature, embracing solitude, and appreciating the simple joys of life.
Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Osaka to catch my flight to Frankfurt. As I prepare to leave, I carry with me a treasure trove of memories and experiences that will undoubtedly enrich my life. This solo expedition to the Tottori Sand Dunes has been more than just a trip; it has been a journey of self-discovery and a celebration of the beauty of our planet. I know I'll be back, perhaps in late October to see the Yuyama district Scallion field in full bloom, or maybe to explore more of the San'in Kaigan Geopark. Until then, Tottori, *tak for alt* (thank you for everything).
I am excited to get back to Hans and share with him all the experiences and photos I have gathered in this trip, and perhaps try to incorporate some of the local dishes I tried into our home cooking.
I will make sure to keep you all updated with my next travel adventures!
