Exploring Tottori's Tranquil Side

Today was a day of gentle exploration, immersing myself in the quieter, more reflective aspects of Tottori. From serene shrines to lush plantations and, of course, indulging in some of the region's famed culinary offerings, it was a day that soothed my soul and tantalized my taste buds. It's amazing how much a change of pace can recharge you, especially when you're traveling solo. I found myself reflecting on my life back in Heidelberg, missing Hans, but also appreciating the solitude and the chance to connect with myself.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at SUNABA COFFEE. I'd heard so much about this local coffee shop, a true Tottori institution, especially since Tottori was once the only prefecture without a Starbucks. The story goes that the governor quipped, We may not have Starbucks, but we have sand! And thus, SUNABA COFFEE was born. I ordered their signature Sunaba Coffee and a simple toast set. The coffee had a unique, almost nostalgic flavor, and I later learned they even make a soymilk version of their coffee. It was the perfect way to start the day, fueling me for the adventures ahead. It reminded me of the cozy cafes Hans and I frequent in Heidelberg, but with a distinctly Japanese twist. I made a mental note to try and recreate the taste when I get back home.

With a caffeine buzz, I set off to visit the Tottori Prefecture Gokoku Shrine. Nestled amidst peaceful surroundings, the shrine offered a moment of quiet contemplation. As I walked through the torii gate, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The shrine is dedicated to the spirits of those who have died in war, and its history is deeply intertwined with the region. I learned that the Gokoku Shrine was originally established to honor those who lost their lives in the Boshin War. The atmosphere was serene, and I took some time to reflect on the sacrifices made for peace. I remember visiting similar shrines with my family in Denmark, and the sense of reverence always struck me deeply.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments of quiet reflection.

Next on my itinerary was the Sightseeing Plantation Sono Hashimoto. I was excited to experience a different side of Tottori, away from the dunes. The plantation is known for its fruit-picking experiences and beautiful landscapes. Although it wasn’t quite pear season, the visit was still worthwhile. Walking through the orchards, I admired the carefully cultivated trees and the serene atmosphere. The air was fresh and filled with the scent of greenery. I learned about the different varieties of pears grown here and the meticulous process of cultivating them. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I was impressed by the plantation's commitment to environmentally friendly practices. I even picked up a small jar of locally made pear jam to take back home as a souvenir for Hans. I know he'll appreciate it with some fresh bread.

For lunch, I ventured to Sankouen in Sakyu, a restaurant that promised authentic Japanese dining amidst serene surroundings. The restaurant is known for its beautiful views and traditional Japanese cuisine. I opted for a set lunch that included local seafood and seasonal vegetables. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The delicate balance of flavors and textures was a testament to the chef's skill and the quality of the ingredients. The view from the restaurant was stunning, overlooking the rolling landscape of Tottori. It was a truly immersive dining experience that connected me to the region's natural beauty and culinary heritage.

In the evening, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Taiki The Seafoods Bowl. This small, hidden gem is known for its exquisite seafood bowls that showcase the freshest catches of the day. The restaurant is located near the Tottori Sand Dunes, making it a perfect spot to end the day after exploring the dunes. I ordered their signature kaisen-don, a luxurious bowl of rice topped with twelve kinds of sashimi and crab meat. The seafood was incredibly fresh, each piece melting in my mouth with a burst of oceanic flavor. The warm atmosphere and the attentive care of the staff made the experience even more enjoyable. It was a culinary highlight of my trip, and I savored every bite. The reviews I read beforehand were spot on – this place is a must-visit for seafood lovers!

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Ajito, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and inexpensive drinks. Nestled in the Suehiroonsencho district, Ajito is a charming spot that encapsulates the essence of Tottori's nightlife. The warm ambiance and friendly staff made me feel right at home. I ordered a local craft beer and struck up a conversation with a couple of locals, who shared stories about the area and recommendations for my remaining days in Tottori. It was a perfect way to unwind and soak in the local culture. I even learned a few new Japanese phrases, which I promptly jotted down in my travel journal.

As I walked back to my ryokan, the night air was cool and crisp. I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore Tottori's tranquil side. The shrines, plantations, and culinary delights had offered a perfect balance of serenity and stimulation. I thought about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to the Yuyama district Scallion field and the Tottori Sand Dunes Park Service Center. I'm looking forward to more exploration and discovery, and I'm excited to share my experiences with all of you.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made sure to charge my camera and pack my essentials for tomorrow. I also made a note to buy a Japanese phrasebook, as I realized how much it would enhance my interactions with the locals. It's the little things like that that can make a big difference in the travel experience. And of course, I sent Hans a quick message, letting him know I was thinking of him. Even on a solo trip, it's always nice to stay connected to the ones you love.

Goodnight from Tottori! I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
