Solo Expedition to the Tottori Sand Dunes
Day 7: Soaring High and Savouring Local Flavours: My Day at Tottori Sand Dunes
Experience the thrill of paragliding over the Tottori Sand Dunes and indulge in local cuisine on a solo adventure in Japan.
Adventures in the Sky and on the Plate
Today was an absolute whirlwind of experiences, a perfect blend of adrenaline-pumping adventure and the quiet joy of discovering local flavours. The Tottori Sand Dunes revealed yet another layer of their charm, and I found myself completely captivated by the landscape and the culture. From floating above the dunes to savouring the local cuisine, it was a day of pure delight.
My morning started with a hearty breakfast at SUNABA COFFEE. I remember when I first moved to Germany, I missed the simple charm of Danish coffee shops. SUNABA COFFEE had that same cozy vibe. Apparently, it's quite the local gem, born from a bit of a playful jab about Tottori being the only prefecture without a major coffee chain. I opted for their morning set, a simple but satisfying combination of toast, egg, and, of course, their signature coffee. It was the perfect fuel for the day ahead.

With a caffeine kick, I headed straight for Tottori Sand Dunes Paraglider Sakyu Honpo. Paragliding has always been on my bucket list. I've always been drawn to the idea of seeing the world from a different perspective. The team at Sakyu Honpo were fantastic. They put my nerves at ease with their professionalism and clear instructions. Before I knew it, I was running down the dune, the wind catching the paraglider, and then I was airborne!

Floating above the Tottori Sand Dunes was an experience unlike any other. The vast expanse of sand, sculpted by the wind into mesmerizing patterns, stretched out beneath me. The Sea of Japan glittered in the distance, a brilliant blue contrast to the golden dunes. It felt surreal, almost dreamlike, to be suspended in the air, with nothing but the wind and the vast landscape for company. For a moment, all the hustle and bustle of daily life just melted away.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones that lift you above the ordinary, offering a glimpse of the world from a new perspective.
After landing, still buzzing from the paragliding experience, I decided to explore IchiriMatsu. It's a small, serene spot nestled near the dunes. I took a leisurely stroll, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the unique landscape. It was a welcome contrast to the adrenaline rush of the morning. The area around IchiriMatsu is known for its scenic beauty, and it was easy to see why. The tranquil surroundings were a perfect place for a reflective walk.

Next up was a visit to the Tottori Sand Dunes Park Service Center. I wanted to learn more about the unique ecosystem of the dunes. The center offered fascinating exhibits on the history, flora, and fauna of the area. I learned about the unique plants and insects that have adapted to survive in this challenging environment. It was a great way to deepen my appreciation for the natural wonders I was experiencing.

By this time, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I made my way to Wakabayashi for lunch. This restaurant is known for its fresh seafood, and I was eager to try some local specialities. I opted for their seafood bowl set meal, a vibrant and colourful assortment of fresh catches from the Sea of Japan. Mosa shrimp, a local delicacy, was included. The seafood was incredibly fresh, each bite bursting with flavour. It was a truly satisfying and authentic culinary experience.

In the late afternoon, I decided to do some souvenir shopping at the Tottori Sand Dunes Park Service Center. I picked up a few small items to remind me of my time here. I found a beautiful postcard of the dunes at sunset and a small handcrafted sand sculpture. I also couldn't resist buying some local snacks to bring back to Hans in Heidelberg.
As evening approached, I headed to Bon-appetit for dinner. This charming restaurant is tucked away in a quiet area near the dunes and is known for its Japanese-style French cuisine. The restaurant is run by a Japanese couple, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. I chose the chef's recommendation, a beautifully prepared sea bass dish. It was a delightful fusion of French techniques and local ingredients. The meal was a perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Tottori Prefecture Gokoku Shrine and the Sightseeing Plantation Sono Hashimoto. It will be another day of cultural immersion and natural beauty, and I can't wait to see what new experiences await me. And perhaps, I'll treat myself to a nightcap at Ajito to celebrate another day of successful exploration.
This solo trip has been exactly what I needed. A chance to reconnect with nature, challenge myself with new experiences, and savour the simple joys of travel. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you embark on alone.
