A Promising Start

Touching down in Yakushima felt like stepping into another world. The air was thick with humidity, carrying the scent of pine and sea, a stark contrast to the dry Berlin summer I left behind. It's amazing how quickly a place can captivate you, and Yakushima had already cast its spell. This solo journey is exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, delve into a different culture, and challenge myself in ways that city life simply can't offer.

My adventure began bright and early, fueled by anticipation and a slightly stale pastry from the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It wasn't exactly a culinary masterpiece, but it did the trick. The restaurant had a charming, old-school vibe, reminiscent of traditional soba shops. You purchase a meal ticket at the counter and hand it over to the staff. It was simple, quick, and fueled me up for the day ahead.

First on the agenda was the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive there was an experience in itself, winding through lush coastal roads with glimpses of the turquoise ocean. As I approached the lighthouse, the views were breathtaking. The lighthouse itself stands proudly against the backdrop of the lush green landscape and the deep blue ocean, making it a picturesque site. The scent of the sea was invigorating, and I spent a good hour just soaking it all in. I could see Kouerrabu Island and even Kyushu mainland in the distance! The lighthouse has been protecting maritime safety since 1897.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments, like standing by a lighthouse, feeling the ocean breeze, and watching the world unfold before you.

Next, I headed to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. As someone who loves history, I was eager to learn more about the island's past and culture. The museum was an enriching experience, showcasing the island's unique heritage and ecological wonders. From ancient artifacts to contemporary displays, the museum presented a narrative that connected the past and present. The exhibits explained the local history and culture of Yakushima. There were original Edo Period documents, wood and wicker folk tools, handicrafts, masks, pottery and festival items on display. I particularly enjoyed the exhibits about Yakushima's native monkeys and deer. It gave me a deeper appreciation for the island and its people.

By lunchtime, I was ready for a proper meal. I decided to try the Katagiri Flying Fish Restaurant, known for its local cuisine with an Italian twist. Being from Puerto Rico, I have an affinity for seafood, and I was intrigued by the idea of flying fish prepared in an Italian style. The restaurant itself had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. I opted for the flying fish pasta with citrus soy sauce. The combination of flavors was surprisingly delightful. It was the perfect blend of local ingredients and Italian culinary techniques. The restaurant is near Anbo Port.

In the afternoon, I explored the Yakushima Market. It was a bustling hub of activity, with vendors selling everything from fresh produce to local crafts. I picked up some insect repellent (which I realized I'd forgotten to pack) and a few souvenirs for my family back in Puerto Rico. The market was a great place to immerse myself in the local culture, and I enjoyed chatting with the vendors and sampling some of the local delicacies. The Yakushima Market offers an authentic shopping experience for the visitors.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Il Mare for dinner. This authentic Italian restaurant is located close to the airport. After a day of exploring Japanese culture, I was craving something familiar. Il Mare didn't disappoint. I ordered a simple margherita pizza, and it was delicious. The crust was perfectly crispy, and the sauce was flavorful. It was the perfect way to end my first day in Yakushima.

Sitting there, savoring each bite, I couldn't help but reflect on my day. From the coastal beauty of the lighthouse to the cultural immersion at the museum, from the unique flavors of the Katagiri Flying Fish Restaurant to the bustling atmosphere of the Yakushima Market, every moment had been a new experience. I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be here, to explore this magical island, and to connect with its people and culture.

As I head back to my guesthouse, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure. The itinerary includes a hike through the Shiratani Unsui Gorge and a visit to Wilson's Stump. I've heard so much about the ancient cedar forests of Yakushima, and I can't wait to see them for myself. I'm also planning to visit Aqua Cafe for breakfast, Yakushima Gallery Restaurant for lunch and Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan for dinner. And maybe, just maybe, I'll end the day with a drink at Cafe&Bar RainTree.

Yakushima, you've already exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

P.S. I really need to remember to buy a travel pillow. The flight from Kagoshima was not comfortable!
