Finding Serenity in Con Dao's Embrace

As my solo trip to the Con Dao Islands nears its end, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had. Today was another chapter in this adventure, filled with a mix of historical exploration, natural beauty, and of course, some delicious Vietnamese cuisine. It's amazing how quickly these past two weeks have flown by, and I'm already cherishing the memories I've made in this tranquil paradise.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at MAY BISTRO. I opted for a classic *bánh mì*, filled with fresh herbs, pickled vegetables, and savory grilled pork. Paired with a strong Vietnamese coffee, it was the perfect way to kickstart my morning. Fuelled up, I set out to explore the island's attractions, starting with Sở Rẫy.

Sở Rẫy, once a significant agricultural area during the French colonial period, now stands as a poignant reminder of the island's past. Walking through the area, I tried to imagine what life must have been like for those who worked the land. The quietude of the place was broken only by the rustling of leaves and the occasional chirping of birds, adding to the contemplative atmosphere. It was a sobering experience, connecting me to the island's layered history in a way that simply reading about it couldn't.

Next on my itinerary was Hòn Tre Lớn, or Big Bamboo Island. This island, a short boat ride away, promised pristine beaches and untouched natural beauty. The boat trip itself was a treat, with the turquoise waters sparkling under the October sun. As we approached Hòn Tre Lớn, I was struck by the lush greenery that covered the island, contrasting beautifully with the white sandy beaches.

Exploring Hòn Tre Lớn felt like stepping into another world. I spent a good portion of the afternoon swimming in the crystal-clear waters and basking in the sun. The beach was relatively deserted, offering a sense of blissful solitude. I even tried my hand at snorkeling, marveling at the vibrant coral reefs and colorful fish that call these waters home. It was exactly the kind of escape I needed, a chance to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences come from slowing down and immersing yourself in the simple beauty of a place.

For lunch, I ventured to Nhà hàng Thu Tâm, reputed to be the largest restaurant in Con Dao. Specializing in seafood, I decided to indulge in some local delicacies. I ordered grilled squid with chili and garlic, and it was absolutely divine. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were bold and authentic. While the restaurant was indeed quite large, it had a cozy atmosphere, and the service was friendly and efficient.

After lunch, I decided to do a little shopping at Shop Thắng Hướng. I was on the lookout for some unique souvenirs to take back home to Berlin. The shop had a wide array of local handicrafts, from intricately carved wooden sculptures to hand-painted ceramics. I picked up a few small items, including a beautiful silk scarf and a set of hand-painted bowls, perfect reminders of my time in Con Dao. Supporting local artisans always feels good, adding another layer of meaning to my travels.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Nhà hàng Phố Biển for dinner. This restaurant, known for its fresh seafood and lovely setting, was the perfect spot to end the day. I savored every bite, reflecting on the day's adventures and the incredible journey I've had in Con Dao.

The Con Dao Islands have a complex history, once serving as a prison. While I've made time to visit some of the historical sites, today was more about appreciating the natural beauty and the simple pleasures of island life. It's a delicate balance, acknowledging the past while embracing the present. These islands offer a unique blend of reflection and relaxation, making them a truly special destination.

I'm already looking forward to my final day here, where I plan to visit the Vo Thi Sau Hero Grave and Chim Chim cape. I'll also be sure to enjoy one last delicious Vietnamese meal at Nhà Hàng Cánh Buồm, and perhaps a drink at Tiệm bia của mực. As my trip comes to an end, I know that the memories and experiences I've gained here will stay with me for a lifetime.

The sun sets on another beautiful day in Con Dao, casting a golden glow over the tranquil waters. I raise a glass to this little slice of paradise, grateful for the opportunity to explore its hidden gems and immerse myself in its unique culture. I will remember this trip fondly, especially when I am back in cold Berlin.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure. I plan to visit the Vo Thi Sau Hero Grave and Chim Chim cape. It will be a day of reflection, remembrance, and appreciation for the sacrifices made for peace and freedom. I’ll also treat myself to a final Con Dao breakfast at Infinity Cafe & Restaurant, lunch at Nhà hàng Poulo Condore, and a farewell dinner at Nhà Hàng Cánh Buồm, savoring the last moments of this culinary journey. And who knows, I might just end the night with a drink at Tiệm bia của mực , reminiscing about the incredible experiences I've had here.

Until tomorrow, friends. Safe travels!
