Finding Beauty in Every Corner of Pelion

Today was a day of simple pleasures and breathtaking discoveries here in Mount Pelion. It’s amazing how a change of scenery can refresh the soul. Hans and I set out with a flexible itinerary, eager to embrace whatever adventures came our way. From stunning viewpoints to delicious local cuisine, today was a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at To Kima Seaside Family Restaurant in Kala Nera. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering a stunning seaside view that made our morning coffee even more enjoyable. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, while Hans enjoyed a hearty omelet filled with local vegetables. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves created a serene atmosphere, setting a positive tone for the day. It’s these small moments of peace that I truly cherish during our travels.

After breakfast, we decided to chase some scenic views, starting with the Pelion Train Viewpoint of Pinatakes. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads that offered glimpses of the stunning Pelion landscape. When we arrived at the viewpoint, we were greeted with a panoramic vista of the mountains and the coastline. The old train tracks added a touch of nostalgia to the scene, reminding us of a bygone era. I couldn’t resist taking several photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the engineering of the train tracks, but even he couldn’t deny the beauty of the view.

Next on our list was the Bench with wonderful view, and it certainly lived up to its name. Perched high on a hill, the bench offered an unobstructed view of the Aegean Sea and the surrounding mountains. We sat there for a while, simply soaking in the beauty of the landscape. It was a perfect spot for quiet contemplation, a moment to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I often find that these moments of stillness are the most rewarding part of traveling, allowing me to connect with nature and reflect on my experiences.

For lunch, we headed to Pagasitikos Restaurant in Kala Nera, a family-run taverna that has been in operation since 1934. The restaurant is located right next to the beach, offering a stunning view of the sea. We decided to try some local specialties, including grilled sardines, calamari, and a traditional Greek salad. The food was fresh and delicious, and the portions were generous. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel like part of the family. It’s these authentic experiences that I always seek out during our travels, a chance to connect with the local culture and savor the flavors of the region.

After a satisfying lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Amadryás, a local shop known for its handmade crafts and souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl that I knew would look perfect on our dining table back in Berlin. Hans, on the other hand, was more interested in the local honey and olive oil, stocking up on some delicious treats to bring home. Supporting local artisans and businesses is something that is important to me, as it helps to preserve traditional crafts and boost the local economy.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to To Katofli tis Ketis for dinner, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Greek cuisine and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant is located in the village of Katochori and features tasteful decor that enhances the dining experience. We started with the highly praised cheese pies drizzled with honey and the succulent tomahawk pork chop. For our main courses, I opted for the moussaka, while Hans decided to try the lamb chops. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was impeccable. The warm and inviting atmosphere made it a perfect spot for a romantic dinner.

To end our day, we decided to visit Grappa Vino & Aperitivo for a nightcap. This popular bar in Volos has a cozy atmosphere and is known for its extensive wine list and creative cocktails. I ordered a glass of local red wine, while Hans opted for a signature cocktail with pineapple flavors. The bar had a relaxed vibe, with soft music and comfortable seating. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration and adventure.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore the enchanting landscapes of Mount Pelion. Tomorrow marks the last day of our Pelion adventure. We plan to visit the Stream at Poros and the Pelion Cross of Jesus Observation Point, hoping for more stunning views and peaceful moments. We'll also be having breakfast at Tavern Pelion Geuseis Portaria, lunch at Souarè Anelion Pelion, and a final dinner at Polydroso restaurant. Before heading back to Berlin, we'll make sure to stop by Doralia Αρχιπελάγος for some last-minute souvenirs and Minelska bar for one last taste of local nightlife. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I am content to savor the memories of today. Goodnight from Pelion!
