Echoes of Ancient Greece

Today felt like stepping back in time, wandering through landscapes that whisper tales of mythology and simpler ways of life. Hans and I set out to explore more of Mount Pelion's natural beauty and immerse ourselves in the local culture. It was a day filled with serene moments, delightful discoveries, and of course, delicious food. It’s days like these that remind me why we traded our Berlin apartment, even temporarily, for the winding roads and hidden corners of the world.

Our first stop was the famed Tree of Life. I had envisioned something quite specific, but what we found was even more special. It wasn't just one tree, but a whole area teeming with life, with sunlight dappling through the leaves creating an ethereal glow. The air was fresh and crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. We spent some time simply sitting there, soaking in the tranquility. It was a perfect way to start the day, grounding ourselves in nature before venturing further.

Next on our itinerary was the Spring of Manas, a location that sounded straight out of a fairy tale. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of the Pelion peninsula. As we approached the spring, the sound of flowing water grew louder, guiding us to a hidden oasis. The spring was nestled amidst lush greenery, with crystal-clear water cascading over rocks and pebbles. It felt like a secret spot, untouched by time. We took a leisurely stroll through the surrounding forest, enjoying the fresh air and the soothing melody of the water.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners of the world.

After our refreshing nature walk, it was time to explore the village of Zagora. We started our culinary journey with breakfast at Loukoulos. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, while Hans enjoyed a hearty omelet filled with local cheeses and herbs. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

With our appetites sated, we wandered through the charming streets of Zagora, taking in the traditional architecture and the vibrant atmosphere. Zagora is known for its rich history and cultural heritage, and it was evident in every corner. We stumbled upon Angeletou - Barouta, Eleni, & Co. O.E., a local pharmacy that also offered a variety of local products. I couldn't resist picking up some herbal teas and traditional skincare products, perfect souvenirs to remind us of our time in Pelion.

For lunch, we chose Armonia Restaurant, drawn in by its cozy ambiance and promise of authentic Greek cuisine. The menu was filled with tempting options, but we decided to share a selection of mezes, small dishes perfect for sampling a variety of flavors. We savored grilled octopus, stuffed grape leaves, and a flavorful tomato salad, all washed down with local wine. The ingredients were so fresh and the flavors so vibrant, it was a true celebration of Greek gastronomy.

In the late afternoon, we treated ourselves to a little retail therapy, exploring the local shops and boutiques. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, perfect for displaying fresh fruit on our Berlin kitchen table. Hans, ever the practical one, bought a sturdy hiking stick, already planning our next adventure in the mountains. We also stopped by Petrino Club Zagora, a local bar, for a refreshing afternoon drink.

As evening approached, we made our way to Agora 1955 for dinner, a restaurant recommended by several locals. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with soft lighting and rustic décor. The menu featured a modern twist on traditional Greek dishes, and we were eager to try it. We started with a selection of local cheeses and olives, followed by a hearty stew of slow-cooked lamb with vegetables. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the chef's skill and the quality of the ingredients. For dessert, we shared a plate of loukoumades, traditional Greek doughnuts drizzled with honey and cinnamon – a sweet ending to a perfect day.

As we drove back to our cozy accommodation, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had explored ancient springs, wandered through charming villages, and savored the flavors of local cuisine. Mount Pelion had once again captivated us with its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. It's amazing how much history and mythology is woven into the very fabric of this land. I was particularly reminded of the wedding of Thetis and Peleus, which was celebrated on Mount Pelion. It felt like we were walking in the footsteps of legends.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Pelion Ski Centre and relax on Chorefto Beach. I am looking forward to the contrast between the mountain and the sea, experiencing yet another facet of this diverse region. I'm also excited to try Dovas Home Cooking for breakfast, Sarande Beach Bar Restaurant for lunch, and cardamo OINOMAGEIREIO for dinner. And maybe, just maybe, we'll find another hidden gem or two along the way. Until then, goodnight from Mount Pelion!

P.S. I almost forgot! I did miss sunscreen again, and Hans had to remind me that it is still important even in the autumn! And we both realized we could use travel adapters, as many of the plugs are different than in Germany.
