A Taste of Phong Nha

Today was all about savoring the local flavors and soaking in the laid-back atmosphere of Phong Nha. It’s amazing how quickly this place has grown on me; the blend of stunning natural beauty and the warmth of the people is truly captivating. I started the day with a craving for something fresh and vibrant, and ended it with a cold beer, reflecting on the day’s adventures.

My morning began at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. I’ve been trying to maintain a mostly plant-based diet during my travels, both for my health and to lessen my environmental impact, and this spot came highly recommended. It was a short walk from my guesthouse, and the anticipation of a delicious vegan breakfast spurred me on.

The restaurant was a small, quiet place, with a lovely view of the river. I ordered the Vietnamese pancakes and a coconut milk coffee, remembering to double-check that they used coconut milk instead of condensed milk, as some places still do. The pancakes were savory and satisfying, filled with fresh vegetables and tofu. Sipping my coffee while watching the boats glide along the Son River was the perfect way to start the day. It's funny, I never thought I'd find such great vegan options in a small town in Vietnam, but it's a testament to how adaptable and innovative the local cuisine can be.

Sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the simple joys of everyday life.

With a happy belly, I decided to do some shopping. Phong Nha Collection caught my eye with its displays of local crafts and souvenirs. I wasn't necessarily looking for anything specific, but I always enjoy browsing and supporting local artisans. The shop was filled with colorful textiles, handmade jewelry, and quirky trinkets. I ended up buying a small, hand-painted bowl featuring a scene of the Phong Nha caves – a perfect memento of my time here. It's these little things that I know will bring back memories of this trip long after I've returned to Berlin.

For lunch, I ventured to The Villas Restaurant, drawn in by its beautiful riverside setting. The restaurant is known for its blend of Vietnamese and Western dishes, and I was in the mood for something a bit more upscale. I opted for the Prawn and Squid Salad with Asian herbs and nam jim dressing, wanting to enjoy the fresh, local seafood. The salad was beautifully presented, and the flavors were a delightful mix of savory, spicy, and fresh. Sitting by the river, watching the karst mountains in the distance, I felt a sense of peace and contentment. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love traveling solo – the freedom to indulge in whatever I fancy, whenever I fancy it.

In the late afternoon, I embraced a classic Phong Nha experience: a visit to the Pub with cold beer. This quirky spot is famous for its incredibly fresh, farm-to-table approach. As the name suggests, they're known for serving cold beer to travelers. I settled into a hammock with a Huda beer, enjoying the view of the Bong Lai Valley. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with other travelers sharing stories and laughter. I didn’t order any food, but I enjoyed watching the chickens roam around the property, knowing that some of them might end up on someone’s plate. It’s a bit of a gruesome thought, perhaps, but also a reminder of the realities of food production.

As evening approached, I made my way to Lotus Restaurant - Phong Nha for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended for its flavorful Vietnamese dishes and welcoming atmosphere. I decided on the Bún chả, a Hanoian specialty of grilled pork with rice noodles, herbs, and dipping sauce. It was absolutely delicious, and the portion was generous. The staff were friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. It’s these small, family-run restaurants that often provide the most authentic and memorable dining experiences.

With a full stomach and a happy heart, I strolled back to my guesthouse, the sounds of Phong Nha winding down for the night. I’m already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore more of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. I’m considering visiting Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave, and maybe even squeezing in a trip to the Dark Cave for some adventurous activities. I’m also planning to visit PHONG NHA FAMILY RESTAURANT for breakfast, Son Doong Restaurant for lunch, and Bamboo Chopsticks for dinner. And, of course, I’ll need to make time for some more shopping at Đặc sản, cafe Hương Rừng and a nightcap at King Kong Bar Phong Nha. It’s going to be another busy but exciting day!

Reflecting on today, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to experience the simple pleasures of Phong Nha. It’s a place that nourishes the soul, both with its natural beauty and its delicious food. And as I drift off to sleep, I can’t help but wonder what other hidden gems this charming town has in store for me.
